Installing the 2AR-FXE Double Atkinson engine.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I finally install the 2AR-FXE into my MR2 Spyder and discuss preliminary results. There's also a channel update snuck in there.
All the parts to do this are available on my site, including the haltech ECU: frankensteinmotorworks.com/

    Thank you for noticing, i really try to be very straight forward and i hate clickbait. It honestly kills me that i had to switch to crank hp instead of wheel hp but it is necessary to give people proper numbers to compare. I do plan on explaining why i'm using 13% for the drivetrain losses in the Dyno video.

    Also, should be gains available as you play with the cam timing. The ECU is currently defaulting to your previous basemap, yes? Given the difference in duration, there may be more gains here by varying the intake and exhaust valve timing. Last, not to be nitpicking, technically it is a double Atkinson CAM engine...it is no longer being operated as an Atkinson cycle engine.

    Although most successful endeavors are predicated on a focus of some sort. As time passes, perhaps consider broadening your offerings. What those offerings might include...I have no clue. In the 90’s, I owned a ‘86 Buick GN. There were a number of vendors that specialized in supporting GN go fast parts. Given Buick only produced the inter cooled 3.8 in ‘86 and ‘87, and over time, that market started to diminish. Many of those vendors began to offer support for models, many of which have been produced in the many millions, and over many decades. Focus is the key. Good Luck !

    Based on my experience with the motor so far you'd have to make a decision on optimizing for peak power or mid range power but the cost would be about 20hp in the area you aren't optimizing. Also this assumes that the sprocket can be installed in an ideal position. You might need to drill a new locating hole to be able to clock it properly. Also don't forget to plug the two vvt-i oil feed holes at the front of the cam to avoid oil pressure loss.

    Does the 2AR take the same bellhousings as a 2AZ does? I was working on a 2AZ swap for my AE86 using a W58 with 3Y bell housing, but after doing some reading, the 2AR seems like a greatly superior platform, but I am worried about transmission options when put into an FR package.

  • @FrankensteinMotorworks

    @FrankensteinMotorworks

    3 жыл бұрын

    it's not 100% identical but only a few bolts are different. there's a really good chance that any bellhousing that a 2AZ will bolt to, the 2AR will bolt to. Note that the engine is a fair bit taller though.

    So I'm thinking about putting one of these in my Celica, probably starting with a base 2AR to get used to the engine and build one like this on the side. Is I worth sticking with the stock ECU or should I use the Link G4+ I was planning to put on my gen2 3sgte? Not that I don't want to use your tune, but is it worth the money to get the OEM ecu if I already have an aftermarket one?

  • @FrankensteinMotorworks

    @FrankensteinMotorworks

    3 жыл бұрын

    If your plan is going with this build that I did you won't be able to use a stock ECU due to the cam trigger configuration so you may as well start with an aftermarket ECU. If you go with a haltech like i did I would be happy to help with the tune side. I'm also now a Haltech dealer if you want to buy one from me.

    I was really surprised, it's so subtle on the vibration that i'm not even sure i can tell a difference. It makes no sense that such a long stroke engine is not vibrating more, the only reason i can think of is because the reciprocating assembly is actually quite light but i'm not sure. What i do know now is that i will not be running another AR with balance shafts.

    @@Rethgore Honestly the FXE is a great place to start. it's a nice high compression engine to start with and it has the same valvetrain as the FE. The big priority should be a better exhaust camshaft and a better intake manifold. Otherwise it's a great place to start.

  • @FrankensteinMotorworks

    The J160 transmission shares the same bolt pattern family as the 2AR. That does not guarantee that it will bolt up but that makes it very likely. at a minimum the two dowels will align so even if you have to add bolt holes to the bell housing the alignment will still be perfect. That said, i recently picked up a TL70 transmission that i will be making an adapter for.
