Stroking the 2AR-FE for 8% more displacement!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video I swap the 2AR-FE for it’s longer stroke 1AR-FE brother. These engines are more or less identical except for the stroke length so it’ll be fun to see what it does to the power curve.
If you want to buy the parts to swap this easily into your MR2 Spyder check out my web store: frankensteinmotorworks.square... It's pretty much a bolt-in swap and there's a video series documenting the steps required.

But thanks again for your channel - really appreciated & I love your can-do approach. I think many Lotus guys ignore the MR2 scene, but in reality they are quite similar & of course Lotus Cars did switch from 2ZZ to 2GR-FE in the Exige since 2012. Although Lotus went down the SC route (for road cars) the 4.0 NA (for race cars) seems very interesting to keep weight / complexity / heat load down. Cosworth & Swindon seemed to be their main suppliers.

Your curves do about what they do on a Ford 5.0-5.8L, a Chevy LS or LT, various imports when you stroke the bottom end and keep the top end and cam the same. Generally it will be inflated by the 8% or whatever the increase in displacement is up to about the very top. At that point it will taper down. The reason is the cam timing only supports that ( a shorter one ) powerband on that displacement. At the higher rpm the piston velocity and acceleration is too great for the cam timing and induction. So it will be a peak torque increase of maybe the 8%. However the peak HP increase is somewhere from 1 to maybe 4 or 5% ( depending on how good or bad the top end was ), not close to 8% because your losing a few hundred RPM off the powerband.

So in this case the 2AR-FE in the scion tc to turn it into a 2.7L I would just have to take the rods and crankshaft from the 1AR-FE? Along side with the JE pistons? Is that right? Lol

  • @FrankensteinMotorworks

I can honestly say i wasn't expecting this question. Aerogel is an amazing insulator but I don't think it could survive normal automotive conditions, especially the constant vibrations. That said, having an insulator that is as close to perfect as we can currently get probably has some interesting implications for exhaust heat energy recovery. Perhaps being able to recover some of that 30% or so of the energy that is lost to heat dissipation.

So, I was looking on your website at the Ecu's. So if you did everything to the 2ar to make a 1ar...I would assume the ecu still being that scion tc... Would the ecu allow the tune to meld with the natural 1ar or does it have to be your version of the 2ar (secretly a 1ar)? I watched this one and the one after. So, if you have a 1ar. Getting higher degree cams and injectors would be about it then...? Too my knowledge, seems legit. These engines seem restricted on all front: Cold air, fire, hot air, and fuel distribution could all be faster. I didn't know all this a while ago. So I just took the muffler off and put on a cold air that's actually cold. Does so much better. So if you can put the cams on your site. I very well might be able to buy and fit them. So if you're still going...please continue. Cams would be great for a while till I say turbo the damn thing. What's even better is they make 2ar turbo kits. Knowing they're basically the same now. You can do that possibly. I know I'm looking into it.
