Installing Tahoe Roof Rack on a Silverado!
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
I finally installed a roof rack from a Tahoe on my extended cab 2003 Silverado! This should work on single and quad cab trucks.
Disclaimer: I do not know if the roof on these trucks are strong and wouldn't trust adding too much weight. Try at your own risk. I am not a professional and don't claim responsibility for issues you may experience.
I made a quick video on how I did it because a lot of people were curious. Please note that I'm not a professional, but I try to be thorough and always do a clean install.
With all the end caps removed, the cut the bars down to 32" which is a perfect fit for an extended cab. I used threaded rivets, rivnuts, or nutsert (depending on who you ask) with waterproof caulking to bolt the roof rack right to my roof. This allows me to easily remove the roof rack when ever I want or need to.
Tools:
45 Piece Threaded Insert Riveter Kit

30PCs 1/4"-20 Stainless Steel Rivet Nuts Nutsert Threaded Rivet

Button Head Socket Cap Screws 1/4-20 3/4"
NOTE: THESE WERE NOT LONG ENOUGH! I ended up getting stove bolts from the local hardware store that I believe were 1 1/4" inch long.

I stumbled across this video looking at rack options for my crew cab, and I just so happen to have a parts Tahoe laying around. Thank you for this idea.

I'm curious if you did this too and if you have used it. I want to do this too but I plan to put about 70lbs on the rack and want to know if it will be strong enough.

@@afamilyoutside yes it would be more than enough strength for it use my to throw spare tire on top
Heck yeah! About to do this on my CREW cab 😊
Man that looks good.
We have a 2008 silverado, and I can't find anything to go on top of the truck (want to put more crap up there for our camping trips). I ordered a couple generic roof bags from Amazon, and there's no where for the bags to grab at the window. I even went to a rack shop, and they said there's nothing for a 2008 silverado. This video helps a lot!

very cool. i have a 2003 with a truck topper on the bed, and been thinking about putting racks on the shell and the cab so i can do a roof top tent and accessories

Did you put a roof top tent on it? That’s what I want to do on my Sierra

@@sliceofbutter6766I have not. I’ve been on the fence between doing that and getting a lightweight slide in camper, but havnt pulled the trigger on either .

I would question the roofs strength. You could do something similar but over the truck bed with a Yakkma or Thule system.
I just got my rack for 20$ from fb market place Can’t wait to put it on!

Looks good, think I'll scoop up an Escalade rack and see if it can be cut down

Hay nice job
Thanks for making this video! I am curious if 3m tape would hold the racks?

Possibly but I wouldn't use them for any luggage or anything
Thanks for making this video. Do you use the roof rack to carry anything? I want to do this too but plan to put about 75 lbs on the rack and want to make sure it will be safe and secure and that the roof rack isn't going to go flying off when loaded up.
@CraigSnedeker

No problem! And no I have not. I'm pretty confident the rack is secure but I have no idea about the roof, it's thin metal and the rivet only goes through the first layer and not both layers.

Just to update I used a roof basket to haul a bag and two suit cases coming home 2 hours one day, worked great. Not 75 pounds but maybe 40-50 including the basket

@@CraigSnedeker I appreciate the follow up. I've been using mine pretty regularly, including off road and it's sturdy as can be. I'm glad yours is working well too.
What size drill bit did you use my good sir?
@CraigSnedeker

I honestly can't remember. I try to match it up to the barrel size on the threaded rivet as close as possible
Why didn’t you use the rail system, remove the plastic cap and that’s the supporting part of the roof
Think it’ll support a roof top tent? 😅

Questionable 😂 I would question the strength of the roof more than the rack itself, though
You get the rack from your local yard? Whatd it run ya

You actually have the rack on backwards, the curve of the cross bars are suppose to be front facing for wind restriction and the aerodynamics as well as the longer end base caps are to be installed on the front as well. Good helpful video though. .

I know, but I realized it fit a little longer/better with the shorter roof on the Ext cab. Switching it around was on purpose :)
