    Professional how-to video JC. 5 stars buddy... Well explained and neat, safe install. As a professional electrician, you have a very high standard of workmanship and it shows in this video. Great job with the narration, filming, and audio. Work safe. Doug@ the "ranch"

    Thanks. I have a single phase 240V 16A 50Hz compressor and am looking to fit an hour meter, too. Mine is completely differentm but I think the same principles apply. I like fitting off the pressure switch as this isn't running a huge load, like the motor or the input side. Need to get something ordered and added.

    Great video thanks brother. I was wondering how it works. I don't have a big compressor like you have. I did get a new one and I want to put a meter on it. I do like the way yours is set up with the thermal protector . I just have the reset button on the motor 220 volts 5hp. This really did help me out anyway. Keep up the great work see you in the next video thanks again brother

    J.C. SMITH PROJECTS One of the best ways to make your air compressor to last is build it a shed outside or even inside the building and install a fresh air vent and a fan system to the outside that will run cool the shed air temp additionally a cold (outside air) intake with a air filter. I purchased a paper style air filter housing to a big rig from a junkyard and put a high flow filter in mine, a buddy of mine used a Duramax airbox and a K&N air filter that he purchased at the junkyard. The think I have found with the fan the comes on to keep the compressor cool in the shed is the shop is much quieter and it runs cooler which helps with it building up water in the system

    I ordered the same hour meter, before I saw your video. My question concerns the back of the hour meter, which is labeled DC-6V-80V. It is also labeled - and +. As it’s DC, how do I know which lugs to attach the leads from the hour meter to? Everything inside the junction block is all AC, as far as I can tell. Before I attach it to the pressure switch, as you’ve done, how do I know for sure that I won’t burn out the hour meter attaching it to AC. I have a few VOM’s and I will check to see if I’m connecting to either, but I’m just initially curious as to why a pressure switch would be DC, and why the hour meter is labeled for DC. Thanks, Roy

    Nice work, J.C. - looks like a factory install. No clue why compressor manufacturers don't include an hour meter with any of their compressors, especially the higher end units. You really have to know hours in order to maintain them correctly! I hate that. Another way to save a buck, I guess. Par for the course today!! Mine doesn't have a contactor - wish it did. It runs direct off the pressure switch. I had to install mine on the lower right side metal flange that's part of the motor /pump mounting plate. Some pretty thick metal there - was a PITA to cut that out to install it. I should've videoed that install - didn't think of it at the time. I wired it direct to the motor leads. Was the most logical spot for me, since there's no contactor. I bought a used Hobbs meter off eBay for mine. Got it super cheap. It started off a .2 hrs, so I just subtract that from the total (made a note of that in magic marker on the compressor). I like the Hobbs for that little "dashed" digit wheel that spins when power is present, and lets you know it's installed correctly without having to wait around for it to roll over. Plus they were used in aircraft for decades, so I knew the quality was there.

    i dont know why they cheap out on that either...you can add a contactor to yours very easily. when shopping for a compressor, i noticed most companies didnt use them on the smaller 5 hp motors only 7.5 and larger...the pressure switch they are using must have heavy enough contacts to handle the load on the smaller ones.

    @@j.c.smithprojects - Ahh, that explains it. Mine has a 5HP motor - pulls 28A or so according to the tag. I'd imagine that 7.5 pulls in the mid to upper 40's - that's some serious juice!

    I have an automatic pressure switch on my Quincy Compressor and don't have wires going to a pressure switch so I was figuring that I would connect this same style hour meter to the load side, where the electric motor is powered as I have a 110/240v hour meter. It mentions "Polarity sensitive" though and doesn't indicate which terminal is for which polarity? Or is that referring to supply power and not return line?

    I don't have that big grey box that you have, all I have is that black box with the on and off switch on top of it and with 4 terminals in it. In that black box 2 wires from the motor hook to 2 terminals, one wire white and the other wire black and then I have another 2 wires from my cord going into the box which are black and white as well and they're hooked up to the other 2 terminals in the black box and I matched the colors accordingly, and the ground wire from the motor and cord are screwed into the bottom plate. My question is can I hook up the hour meters positive wire to the black wire in the box and hook up the hour meters negative wire to the white wire in the box or vise versus? Will that meter take 220v for power. Please excuse my ignorance when it comes to electricity. Thank you for the video. I gave it a gigantic thumbs up. 👍👍

    Great video. I don’t quite understand how I will know the the hour meter is accurate to the voltage I’m using when I hook it up to mine. Would 110 run the meter half the speed as if it’s connected 220 ? I bought one from amazon. No directions. Mine says AC110V~250. Does that mean it’s accurate for either voltage?

    Some hour meters work from 10v to 80v you don't need to tell it what volt it is. It just starts counting when the current starts going throw it.

    Two things JC. First, make sure the hour meter is rated for the voltage that you're running the compressor on and in the US, purchase a 60 hZ hour meter. You might wish to include a automatic drain for the tank. A large tank run during very humid or cold conditions with fill with water quickly. Will also keep the tank from splitting once the water inside freezes in the winter breaking the bleed valve. Ask me how I know?

  • @j.c.smithprojects

    @j.c.smithprojects

    4 жыл бұрын

    it is rated from 100v to 600v ac. i prefer draining the tank myself as i can monitor what is coming out. if the compressor looses a seal and starts to pump oil in the air or if there is metal from an internal failure, it will show up when draining.

    Thank you Captain Obvious. If you are familiar enough with J.C.'s channel , then you know his workmanship and attention to detail. Seeing that all work shown is now past tense, any suggestions of which Hobbs meter is moot. I will not slight you on the auto-drain feature, though a good mechanic prefers to monitor and maintain his equipment (by manually draining the tank in this instance), there ARE times when that option has more value than just being too lazy to blow-down your tank.
