Installing a Wilwood Big Brake kit on my Miata RF!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I probably should have upgraded brakes before I installed a supercharger, but where’s the fun in that? To make sure my Miata can stop as well as it now goes, I picked up Flyin’ Miata’s Big Mama Jama Brake kit. This kit comes with 6-piston Wilwood calipers, 12.88 inch two-piece rotors and Flyin’ Miata’s own stainless steel brake lines.

The install is straightforward and took me about 3-4 hours including recording video and bleeding brake lines. Let me know what you think of the install in the comments below and please hit the subscribe button if you like the video.

Great vid but wished you had a body cam holder for you to use both hands to do ALL steps you took to install brackets etc and closer lighting. But over all good vid :)

These brakes are awesome! I just got back from a trip through the tail of the dragon. The brakes were flawless. Pedal feel is fantastic and so give so much more confidence. Even just braking on the interstate feels safer with these!

Thank you for the video very good looking at doing the same. How happy are you with the new brakes? And what break kit did you buy? Are those the big mama Jamma brakes?

Quick question, after install. Did you feel or hear any odd grinding when you took it for your first spin? As I too have the one washer shim on the calliper s and everything seemed perfect until I took it for a slow drive around my block to ensure all was well. But it seemed like some sort or scary noise and grind that made my buddy and I feel there was some sort or binding of something that didn’t make us feel safe going further… we will put it back on the stands and reassess back to the stage of shims but just not sure if this was due to going through the break in period? Any thoughts? Cheers

Did you need to install wheel spacers for these giant 6 piston calipers?

  • @DukeGaGa

I see you installed some wheel spacers, I remember seeing on Flyin' Miata's website they said it doesn't need spacers for the stock 17" wheels. How big of a spacer did you end up using to clear the stock wheels?

I installed spacers last year when i installed a set of coilovers. The spacers aren’t needed to clear the wilwood calipers.

No modifications were needed to the dust shields. It’s a simple bolt-on install!

Honest feedback here, great video showing all that you do however, it would be better if it wasn't done in fast speed, and you explained what you were doing. For people that have never done a brake job explaining what you're doing in normal speed would be most beneficial, unless your reason for doing this was to show that you can do it. I know, it's not a difficult job, I've done many brake jobs myself, but I'm speaking for the people that will be doing a brake job for the first time. You have great content, just no explanation of what you're doing. I'm ragging on you or saying this is a bad video, because people that have done this before know what you're doing, I'm just giving some honest feedback.

your installation is wrong. The arrow indicate biggest piston place not the direction of rotor. The biggest piston must be down. The arrow indicates this. It is logical because the biggest piston does the biggest force on rotor.

This is not correct. The large piston should be on the ‘exit’ side of the rotor. The arrow indicates direction of travel of the rotor through the caliper. There are numerous guides available from wilwood and other sources (far more reputable sources that me!) that describe this. Anyone installing a similar kit on their vehicle would be well advised to contact the manufacturer with questions such as these rather than following what some guy (aka me!) does on the internet! :-)
