Installing a Gravel Driveway and Pad for My Next Buildings on the Homestead
Winter has briefly returned to my wilderness homestead, halting maple syrup production for a week but allowing me time to excavate and install a gravel driveway and landing pad for my next building projects.

I love how Cali just loves retrieving her toy, comes back, tail wagging as if to say, "I FOUND IT"!
Your dog is just so darn cute
Happy weekend Shawn and Cali and to everyone wherever you are in the world!

I always like seeing Cali walking up to you with her toy wanting you to throw it especially when you are working you and Cali take care and have a nice weekend.🇨🇦👋🤠👋🇨🇦
Well done Shawn, that will make a huge difference for you when done.
She knew Exactly what you were talking about! 😂 and took off to get her toy as you walked away. 😂 😂
Oh boy! Now he's got a front end loader on a new red tractor. Gone are the days of a world made by hand. I've seen chainsaws run on ICEs. We see great changes. 😚 And to think...he dug that basement-cellar by hand...BY HAND...with a shovel! I don't think he'd do that again these days. Shoot! I miss the good old days at the old cabin. Wel-l-l-l....he IS man-hauling still. And did see a shovel just now, so.... Be that as it may, old Mother Nature still had some Winter in her plans. But, I swear, that dog is smart and devilish cunning. She was actually playing with Shawn! She knew where the toy was all along. She was just waiting there to see what he'd do! 🤣😅😊🥰 Then when he gave up she jumped up and went and got it.

ahhh gotta love that Banjo .... been a great day ... was out on the city street traffic whizzing by a dozen people walking down the sidewalk ... myself head to grab some groceries and poof there between the road and a busy parking lot a gorgeous female turkey chowing down on seeds and what not ... of course I stopped and watched for a good 5 minutes and she looked and said ahh fine watch then kind of look and went on eating ... never expected to see a skittish turkey IN the CITY and not being so bold .... it was AWESOME ... been a relaxing day and this video just hit at the right time too

When I was a kid I lived by a huge tract of woods and I don't ever remember seeing a deer, or even deer tracks, and definitely no turkeys. Now they're everywhere
@kaboom-zf2bl
2 ай бұрын
@@4wheelliving132 in more rural parts of the city they are common ... this is the kind of traffic one sees just outside of the downtown core of a city .... and on a 4 foot wide section of grass between paved places is where this was ... so NOT common at all ... and actually quite loud for most birds ... usually it's ONLY chickadess on that bit of green ... so seeing a good 15lb female turkey is unheard of here
I've been busy myself clearing about an acre more of overgrown stuff , leveling it out, picking rocks till I'm blue in the face and getting it ready for planting and did a circular gravel drive in front of the 30X26 garage/ workshop I put up last year that I still need to finish up doors, solar and the inside on . Got snowed out the last 2 days though with several snow squalls coming through , low teens and heavy winds so I'm dubbing off today. Looking around though it probably wouldn't hurt to break out the broom and get busy,,, I have 2 dogs and it's shedding season so I think I got enough "dust dinosaurs " floating around the cabin, I could almost knit another dog ! LOL Plus it's mud season in VT. and have puppy prints everywhere ,, and YES it's as bad as it's rumored to be and a separate season in it's own right here in VT , where foot and a half ruts in the roads is the norm up here in the mountains and boonies. No Biggie,,,, I like it that way,,it keeps the "Riff Raff " away. I love working on my little patch of forest and improving my land and building stuff but pushing 74 now it's going a bit slower than I'd like sometimes , but then I've only been here a bit > 3 years so far and I've already accomplished allot already considering I'm doing all the work by myself ! The used tractor I bought a month ago has and will really help out though. Soon as the weather permits I'll be planting about 2 -2 1/2 acres with a mix of wild flowers, Red & White Clover along with a couple apple trees, 20 Arborvitaes ,a few ceder , Hemlock and a small 1/2 acre food plot up on the mountain above me which are all 99% prepped and ready to go and most the trees on site already and have got allot done this year all ready with this mild Winter we've had so far. Hopefully I can put my land into current use status this year so I can get help from the State Forestry Dept. in doing a wildlife and forest management program on my land and establish an even better deer yard than I have already. I'm loaded with all kinds of wildlife , especially Deer, Turkey, Bear, Fox and Bobcats and have 2 brooks loaded with Brook Trout, one that runs right in front of the cabin, and a nice mixed forest all around me but I want to do more improvements to draw in more small game. I've established several brush piles up on the mountain and it's already attracting in more Coons, Rabbits and Partridge, even though very few so far. All around me for miles is nothing but state and timber company land that won't be harvested again for years with only 4 house's on this road and no other houses or power for 6 miles after that , with those being way on the other side of the mountain from here . That part of the road is closed 5-6 months out of the year as well and still is presently . Nice and peaceful here and a wonderful little 25 acre slice of Heaven for sure , just wish I hadn't procrastinated so long in finding it ! Life is good at the High Mountain Homestead 👍
🤔 Hello and best regards / I see that winter does not want to go away, but soon its reign on this charming land will end !✍🙂🙋♀
Screw a tire into your chopping block so that the wood doesnt go flying everywhere when you chop it. Try to find 30 inch inner diameter tire so you can put q lot of wood in there at one time.

A wife, a dog, and a tractor. All you need to do now is crack open an ice cold beer and you’ll be ready to write the next country chart-topper 🤠. Lol, have a good weekend!
You are rather brave to be doing that work with a compact tractor at this time of year. It is a recipe for getting stuck and it usually takes another tractor to get you out. Good luck.

One thing I've never quite understood Shawn. Is the workshop on the same site as the new Cabin/homestead? As I remember at around Christmas you explained you have more than one homestead to create redundancy and have contingency from just having one homestead
@LivinInSim
2 ай бұрын
From what I understand, he currently resides in two dwellings. The one farther out is the cabin he built by hand where a lot of the footage on this channel takes place. It has the recently built indoor bathroom, sleeping loft and outdoor kitchen attached. He's said it's somewhat of a Man Cave where he himself spends a lot of time, but it's also the contingency one like you said. He built it to replace the small cabin he sold. That property became problematic due to creepy neighbors and a road to another person's property being surveyed. This new road was quite close to the dwelling and would have a certain amount of traffic. That next year he also built and contracted a house for the family due to the pandemic. It's semi off grid but maybe closer in. It's where the large flat garden plot is, and I _think_ where this workshop and maple syrup processing area is. If so, he had the land before, as he built this little workshop before he even started the cabin farther out. He hasn't really shown the house part of the area as far as I know, but I'm not on his Patreon. It is pretty much a homestead as you said, with more actual produce being grown. I hope this is factually correct. I understand his need to keep safe, and he and his family's need for privacy. But I also was confused for quite some time. Not that it was a large issue, just mildly puzzling. I think by writing it out, I understand it better now, so hope it helped you as well. 😊

I think you need to buy yourself a hydronic log splitter as it will save your axe from bouncing off the frozen logs. It would be very time saving and less taxing on your body. 🇦🇺🦘🦘🇦🇺

Please, please share more of your new diet with us on KZread... most of what I find in my research on inflammatory foods is contradictory... about the only thing most sources agree on is nightshades. Please share in-depth what you are doing differently and what your sources of information are... I'm very interested in learning more about this...
You still have lots of snow ! It is Spring so it won't last long .
Sean for the life of me I gotta say living up in the north country why you would ever buy a tractor without a heated cab in an air conditioning cab with the snow and the blowing wind I can sit in mine in a t-shirt in the winter and in the summer time I can have the air on and not get bit by mosquitoes. You might consider adding a cab to your tractor seriously
Wow 6 minutes 😮
Yeah I would say it's better to have a driveway.
Awesome work! I didnt see but u can smooth the road really fast if you tilt the bucket down and float the front while you back up. Rock is super expensive especially with half loads. Shawn, do you think sap will run again this coming week?
Olá ❤❤❤😊
Assuming you will leave the workshop in its current location. Lots of work ahead. Thanks Shawn
I hate to say this, but you aren't getting any younger and there's no shame in getting some proper equipment to make your life a little easier, like an excavator with a thumb on the bucket to help moving logs, or maybe even a skid steer, and definitely a log splitter

Hello
You'll have that place looking like a Toronto suburb in no time, Good job, keep at it.
Is it a secret what he is building next ?
Is that na 6 lb axe you are using? Good for hard wood logs. We used to use 4 lb ones when I was young mostly on beech logs which are easy when green.
thets a short one 😁 see you next time.
You needs chains on them there tires 😂😂 Cali says i dont know dad i didnt see where you through it last time so how am i supose to point 😂 She went right and it went left 😂😂
Wouuuu, timem 5.00...., what kind of Ax do you have???, was it "frozen"??, never seen anything ...like that!!???, Get a Finnish One, Fiskars,...That would never, ever happen again !!!!! Best in a World, and... even I am writing from Sunny South Florida,...living her since 1985, my Hometown is at exact Arctic Circle, Rovaniemi, at Northern Finland !! Keep it up ,man, cant wait, you will build up real Sauna !!!!=))
Hi Shawn. I always look at you from Argentina. I don't know if you have said it in any video. I would like to know what the land where you build is like, that is, a map of the location of the buildings. If the first cabin you sold was nearby, this workshop where you are now and the new cabin that is by the river. And if you can tell us what the new project you will build is. Thank you and have a good winter
Hi James. Is the workshop very far from your new cabin?
Build it strong and safe. ❤❤
How did you get the gravel to site?
You needed that tractor more than anybody I know. Cheers
So hot here and cold there
You had said in a previous video that you were moving the work shop to a new location to where you put the fireplace etc. Higher up ground. Did you change your mind??

Whatever happened to the mushroom farm?
Why did you say in a previous video that you sold your other homestead and then say you have two properties? Found out about the problems you had at the original homestead, therefore, please clarify. Thank you.
