Insta360 X4 - Further Stitching Analysis And X3 Comparison

Ғылым және технология

#insta360 #insta360x4
Here I take a closer look at how the stitching compares between the Insta360 X3 and X4 as well as checking if the latest X4 firmware has any effect on the stitching. I also show that there's a significant difference in stitching when switching between 5.7K and 8k on the X4.

I just got my X4 and the stitching is something I was hoping not to see, but did. Your video shows it really well. Thank you

Very nice video, thank you! The stitching defect was the immediate thing I noticed when I received my X4. I didn't have such issue with my X3, as also compared in your video. It's likely that the X4 has become larger and longer in size, which makes its software more difficult to stitch images together while hiding de camera. Or, the higher frame rate or resolution exposes much more details and makes image processing harder for stitching. I don't know if this defect is only for certain X4 devices or its for all X4s (I asked lots of X4 buyers, some of them said they didn't have this issue...) Anyway, this is unacceptable for my use. I decided to return my X4 and wait to see if they can fix this later.

i dont think it's a defect... its most likely cause by software as its using AI stitching i believe... Those buyer said no issue because they are not as OCD thats why...

I just typed a long comment and then accidentally wiped it. Anyway, in brief for once, excellent comparisons, thanks. It seems to me that as we are looking at highly processed versions of what the lens projects onto the sensor, results can vary from shot to shot and can even vary within the frame. Often the X3 rendering of trees seems crisper than the X4 and for grass it is the other way round (to take just two components). Ultimately the choice comes down to a comparison of average or typical results, to avoid the chronic indecision I am still experiencing!

Thanks for the video. Very informative and interesting. I just upgraded from an X3 to the X4 and I love it and to me well worth the price. Oh, and a BIG thumbs 👍 up.

An interesting comparison would be an X4 on the latest firmware vs an X3 on firmware from around its original release. I assume the X4 will look much better when it’s a couple years old and has had several firmware updates over those years.

I appreciate your videos with these comparisons. I am Interested in seeing how the stiching is affected when using bullet time. I have both the bullet time rotation wand that attaches the 360 stick and the retractable 360 cable. When using the rotation stick i can point the lens downward to avoid seeing stitches with the people I'm doing the bullet time with but the downside is that i can see the shadow of the stick. When using then retractable cable the lenses twist and turn so much that i see the stitching but i don't get shadows.

Yeah, great! I was seriously considering buying this new X4. That blurring and distortion due to stitching are a real deal breaker. I'm sure the effects are what some people are looking for, but I was just hoping for really good and stabilized 4K and 8K video in a small camera. These ain't it. Thanks!!

Great methodical analysis once again! It looks to me like the stitching, which is done by Insta360 Studio, has a few hard-coded values in its implementation. These values' dimensions would be correct for 5.7k resolution footage but not with the new 8k one. It's an educated guess from how the output looks and the fact Insta360 Studio didn't need to support input video beyond 5.7k from its inception - that could be completely wrong tho. Is the problem apparent for photos as well?

Thanks for the video, really helpful! I do not have this blur line at all with my X2, like nothing. Did you use the calibrate function in the Insta360 desktop app? It seems to do something. I will not buy the X4 as that line is terrible, the X3 is pretty bad too, I have nothing like that with my X2, no blur line should show up at all if you're far away a few meters from the camera. I wonder if this is because the X3 and X4 are thicker than the X2. I also do not have any weird ugly lens flares that the X4 has when you point at the sun (I saw this in a different video).

Another excellent review! I recently returned a newly purchased X3 for the X4 and am very glad I did so as I was well within the window to return it. My main use for the X4 is on my Street Motorcycle. I seem to notice a lot of blur still when on the 8K/30 setting. Especially when I was traveling through the Avenue of the Giants Redwoods with my old X3. What settings should I be using on a Motorcycle for 360 vs just top quality one direction video with one lens? Any help you could give would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hey Roo, I noticed a new setting for In-Camera Stitching under: Settings -> Image Settings -> In-camera stitching It wasn't mentioned in the firmware notes, or anywhere else for that matter, and seems to have only been introduced in the latest firmware. Any idea what this does? For example, does it improve stitching or is the stitching better in-camera vs in-app/in-desktop? Thanks

Post process stitching could be tuned to avoid artifacts, though that may require other software. On the other hand, in camera stitching can use the whole video image for data. I don't know what Insta's software supports.

this was my exact question - the default the in camera stitching was set to off and the stitching was very bad and very noticeable on exported images (using insta360 app for post production). Since switching to stitch in camera the result has been much better. I have only been using iOS app not desktop.

So you would rate the video quality of the X4 than the X3. I saw other footage were the X3 had better results. IPhonedo is going to post a view about his findings. How would you rate photos?

Stitching means taking the two images from the two separate lenses and joining them together into one big spherical image. The line where the two half domes join is called the stitch line. If I pointed the lens towards myself in those video clips the stitch line would be on the sides and you would not see it in the video and so it wouldn't be a test of the stitching.

That blur halo effect is reminescent of fake 3d background fills. Very distracting.
