Such an amazing story so well done. Huge appreciation to Amber King and Vox for this masterpiece of a video. I truly feel like this was one of the best lore breakdown videos I've watched so far.

There's a thing important to remember, and that's that Konrad could see the future. They were flawed visions of the worst possible outcome but that's what he thought fate was. He always saw himself becoming a monster because the Emperor gave him the foresight that would transform him into such a thing. That's why he sees his own death as vindication: every sin is punished, and he is the Emperor's sin. His death is a declaration of guilt by his father, and death is nothing compared to vindication.

45:00 actually, he had a super sense of justice. He was just disturbed by the worst of humanity and crazy visions from birth. But there is another universe where kurz has a nicer childhood, or the emp gives him attention (he could calm the visions and crazy in him, if emp had just cared enough to keep curz around and give him some parental attention, he probably could have psychically cured him just by being around more), and then he ends up becoming 40k Batman, dark and justice obsessed, but still on the side of good.

He was a victim of fate - developed alone on a dark world, with no guidance during his formative years. Chaos put him on Nostramo for a reason - to twist and destroy his mind through isolation, instead of trying to break his will or body. Chaos feared him - his martial prowess in close combat, his stark and literal interpretation of the law, and his immense precognitive abilities. Konrad's intended and ultimate purpose was to be the Emperor's Judge, and the8th Legion were to ultimately be not too unlike the U.S. Marshalls of the Old West, but on a galactic scale - hunting down and punishing the most wanted criminals that had already been judged guilty by Konrad, with the Emperor's Blessing, and must be located in order for that judgement to be passed, with death being the only punishment. Konrad was simply a child of the Emperor lost to a guided fate and driven insane in the process. (I've been playing a Night Lords army since the early 90's. Curze is my Primarch of choice, and the Night Lords my Legion).

As for what you mentioned at the beginning of the video, I’m with you it is absolutely amazing the quality and quantity of fan content that is out there in the 40k community. Maybe because of how it’s centered around the more creative assembling and painting, which also can encourage you to think and wonder about all sorts of little niches in this spectacular and horrifying setting. I know even before KZread just looking at the rule book art inspired me to learn art and painting to try and capture some of that awesomeness. And years later I keep getting inspired by all the badasses in the fandom, with their own fav projects they put out there. Plus there are so many different ways to be creative with this, from writing a little fanfic, doodling chaos symbols, composing voice acted lore depicting dives, or producing music, paintings etc it’s endless.

Kurze proved his point constantly. He saw his own death and came to the conclusion that nothing he did would change that. Ultimately, he saw no reason to change his ways for he was inevitable and truly meant for this purpose. To inflict fear of disloyalty to the Imperium into the populace. Without it, order would not be present therefore he would still have to inflict fear no matter what. Hence, when Horus (Chaos) asked him to join The Traitor Legions he concurred because he had already been doing those things anyway as well he knew he wouldn’t die from any of his brothers. Therefore, his purpose was solidified in that moment. All he had to do was purge and wait for death.

Wooo we finally did Konrad! This was a great reaction I knew you'd like him so thanks for finally checking him out. Seeing you take in the thought process of Konrad and contemplating whether he's completely wrong or if he actually has a point makes me think we might have a contender for 2nd favourite Primarch lol. But to add another layer to Konrad and to explain a point everyone and even Sevatar brought up, why did he only kill and not try peace? I mean many other Primarchs did, didn't they? Firstly, I think Amber king did a good job bringing to bear the fact that though Konrad was a Primarch, he was still a literal child. He had no framework of the universe to build from, he wasn't taught nuance or empathy, nor could he understand it and a sense of morality wasn't built in him. He had knowledge yes, he knew wrong when he saw it, but he had no wisdom or true comprehension. For example, once Konrad got shot in the chest and he escaped but the bullet got caught in his chest. He knew that the bullet was caught in his upper pectoral muscle, between two specific muscle fibres and the wound would become inflamed if he left it in.... But then he asked himself, what is inflammation? What is a "pectoral muscle" ? What are muscle fibres and why will they swell up and become "infected" if this bullet stays in? He knew what none of it was, but he knew it was bad so he got the bullet out. It only made sense didn't it? It was bad, so he took it out and now he was better and will survive, right? Now apply that same, mechanical thought process to superman with his similarly inbuilt sense of justice and put him in a city filled to the brim with heinous criminals. Now when he starts eventually killing, make sure none is there to tell him it's wrong or to show him any different way, then to put a nail in the coffin, *show him it was working.* The Chaos gods played their cards well with the Primarchs. The best way you can ensure to fxck up someone's head permanently is by fxcking them up when they're a kid. It may be weird, but I feel so, so bad for dear Konrad. Ave dominus nox!

"Fear of reprisal will keep the rest of this planet in check, not benevolence. The rule of law cannot be maintained by the blind hope that human nature is inherently good. Haven't we seen enough to know that ultimately the mass of humanity must be forced into compliance?" - Konrad Curze taken from the Dark King audio drama.

  • @darkartist321
    @darkartist32111 ай бұрын

I would agree, that is one interpretation of Konrad's emotional struggles. He probably felt that he was a victim because in his experience he couldn't do anything to change his future. So his philosophy on life probably revolved around the fact that his destiny is predetermined, and he couldn't change it or the nature of man. On top of that, he knew his father made him and figured that maybe his father could see the future as well and designed him that way, further supporting his belief. He was so focused on the end of the journey; he didn't think that maybe he could have enjoyed the journey and make a difference to others in a positive way instead. He probably wanted to be different, but then felt it would be against his nature and would have an existential crisis. Alternatively, maybe he didn't want to change and just wished someone actually appreciated his views and actions as they were. He did things he believed in and would still be ostracized for it; he might have had a hard time seeing it came out of love and concern, instead of disdain. It's sad, but understandable. He's not wrong about some aspects of life but couldn't take the next step to understanding how to navigate this "world" in a positive way for himself and others.

Love Amber King, his video on Jaghatai where he covers a conversation between Jaghatai and the fractured essence of Magnus the Red is beautiful. ‘I have what I came for, brother,’ said the Khan. ‘You can only give me one piece of knowledge that I truly desire.’ Magnus inclined his head. ‘And what is that?’ ‘How to restore you.’ Magnus started. For a moment he looked truly bewildered, as if he had expected mockery and received sincerity, or perhaps the other way around. He looked down at his hands, then around at the devastation of his kingdom. Misery mingled with confusion. ‘I am corrupted,’ he whispered, as if realising it all over again. ‘Restore me, and I shall become a lord again. I shall be the Crimson King, free to rule over a world of spells and vengeance. The galaxy may live to rue that.’ ‘You were my friend,’ said the Khan, quietly. Magnus looked at him, and for a moment, just a moment, the old dignity was there, etched upon a ravaged face and glimmering in the dark. ‘Then,’ he said, ‘I judge you know what to do.’ The Khan nodded, and pulled his sword round for the strike. Slivers of witch-light skittered along the rune-wound steel. ‘Until we meet under starlight,’ he promised. ‘Sooner than you might think,’ said Magnus, making no effort to evade the blow.

Konrad and Angron are the most tragic stories in my opinion People judge Konrad Curze alot but he had fought for his life from the first moment of consciousness, he only learned terror crime and vile minds for his first years, he is grownup in it and the imperium he learned to know didnt show him much different. Then when he saw what happened to his homeplaned while entrusted of the administratum of the imperium he saw all that he had worked and killed people for just destroyed by corrupt and weak people. His own father who created and gave him his duties thow him away because he did what he was created for. he is my fave primarch because of his tragic and fascinating story. I thi nk his visions of this dark future, tortured him and the knowledge that his visions come true. Curs is harsh but his way worked in this terrible universe.. It isnt our universe, this has gods and curse way is the only way to hold them in place to be so terrifying that even the lies of the smooth chaos tongues cant persuade you

He is not wise, he think he is but he is not fixing anything. He is not applying solutions, only momentarily ridding the world of another being of nature only trying to survive out of necessity or not, but it will never stop, unless a solution is provided

Kanrad did try to change his fate, but mostly in the most needlessly dramatic and suicidal way possible by having one of his brothers kill him early, and in the early part of his story he was also trapped not only by his visions but also by how successful his methods were in the short run, he made his planet serine, he had the lowest rate of deaths in a world he took, which reinforced his behavior. As well he also tried early on to raise his sons right but he didn't go back to Nostromo to demand decent people and after a while he just gave up on them.

2 hours 13 minutes Sanguinius gave a good speech there too. He said that the worst thing the Emperor WOULD do to Conrad was forgive him. That all of Conrad's life would be invalidated and he would find salvation, becoming a new human being. Conrad was paralyzed by the thought. He almost felt hope at the idea. "...but he will never forgive you. Because I wont let him. I wont give you the chance to see him. If you want your fate, then enjoy it brother." Conrad was frozen mid-scream as his stasis pod sealed him before being ejected into space.

Im curious, if Konrad did change his ways wouldn't his visions or future change? From day one no matter what he did it still led to the same fate so it seemed fixed. All Primarchs went to a planet that made sense in a way which sounds like it was pre set from the Emperor. What different can be done on his home planet, it was the most corrupt planet in the imperium. The Emperor couldve helped since he relaxes his mind. Konrad is a tragic story and he got the short straw

Konrad Curze is not a man, he is a monster wearing the mask of one. He is not a tragic man who grew up on a world of scum and darkness but a child who always had darkness in his mind, heart, and soul since the first moments of sentience when he devoured the flesh of a human. Konrad is not a man who seeks justice but a man who’s wanton cruelty and lust for suffering and violence found an excuse through justice. Konrad Curze CHOSE evil because it justified his cruelty, Konrad would always prefer vindication because he could never truly admit to himself that he was BORN a monster. He had to justify himself that anyone could be him, that he was no different than anyone else, that the emperor made him a devil. But long before the emperor even found him and put him to use he was always a monster, a torture, a devil. He was always the NIGHT HAUNTER.

It's theorised that Konrad was supposed to be the law maker and law bringer after the Great Crusade. He'd be able to show empathy, nuance and mercy before dealing out his sentences and due, uncompromising justice. He would be judge, jury and jailor all in one, the perfect enforcer distilled into a single being and the epitome of order ⚖

Oh boy... Was Konrad such a monster, or was the fact that he could per-ordain his betrayal of the Emperor, foresee all of the horror he and his legion had caused, and eventually ALLOWING himself to be killed by Imperial assassins make him the monster? Did Konrad or Sanguinius ever truly have any free will? Better and brighter minds than I will fumble about that conundrum! Also, as an ORK player: Oi! Boys! There's some o' dem Space Marines! Who's down for a scrap?!

2:03:00 Konrad is cursed by future sight. And he convinced himself that the future was unchanging. When Konrad fought Sanguineous, Konrad wanted to defy his fate by choosing to die in that moment. Sanguineous didnt spare Konrad, in Konrad's mind. Instead fate wouldnt allow Konrad to die. That justified Konrad's belief in his lack of agrncy, lack of ability to choose to be anyrhing different. Konrad spent his life trapped in a certainty about a future he hated, but felt he had ability to prevent. A powerless marrionate lashing out at his creator.

Great reaction video. I am glad you enjoyed it. For the next video. If you want to do another Primarch. I would recommend Amber King's Jagatai Khan or Magnus the Red. Both of which have great stories and philisopies. If you want to try another non-primarch character. I recommend Amber Kings's Kharn. Which gives great insight into the World Eater's and their tragedy.

Konrad Curze and the Night Lords definitely had a place in the Imperium… Not all enemies are going to line up their armies and fight man to man, woman to woman, machine to machine. Eventually the Imperium would face and did face enemies that required different tactics.. They weren’t going to match armies…. They would lie, cheat, sin, turn to chaos, pretend to be compliant and defy behind the scenes, support rebel groups, etc… You need fear… you need a creature of mythical strength and prowess.. But also a creature that could put the fear into the population… a mythical beast to terrorize and force compliance through horrible acts.. The population will eventually turn on their rulers… Also…. For all of their killing and torture… They killed far fewer people than other Legions. They would not bomb and destroy cities… they would sometimes.. but they would…. Haunt the nights.

the night lords is supposed to be the police force after the GC but so much corruption got to curze's head from the start that his take on justice became so mudded and black and white, and for another fact the night lords actually have the most least casualties amongst all the legion even those who deemed themselves honorable..

I think the gods were screwing with his foresight. I don't remember where I read it, but it was Master of Mankind I believe, that he states that his visions become really fuzzy at the end-ish of the Great Crusade. That's why the Crusade was so rushed, he supposedly believed they had to outrun whatever was about to hit them and accelerated the reunifications. Honestly it makes alot of sense to me

As for the lord of the 8th, he is a prime example of a primarch who truly needed to be raised by the emperor and Malcador, only magnus the red and royal dorn truly saw the villas under the imperial palace intended for them, to my knowledge anyway.

All questions of why everything is so horrible in 40k can be answered by one of three answers: 1 the War in Heaven 2 Old Night 3 F'ing Horus. In this case it was Old Night, a bunch of marginal worlds devolved into barbarism due to being cut off from the wider galaxy and Nostromo was more marginal than most.

On the contrary, Conrad and Aangron were not only meant to be essential. They might of been the very things the imperium needed. If they didnt get snatched up by the chaos gods. Conrad is a natural judge and has the best grasp of justice and law. It was just unfortunately forged in the shittiest world of the imperium at the time. And aangron was supposed to have a healing and empathetic nature. He was supposed to be able to take on the pain others. But he lost that due to the butchers nails that constantly drove him mad, abd caused him unending pain.

8 months late lol.. But may I say you did an excellent job with this one. Konrad, well. He is a complex fellow to say the least. He despised his own sons. But he accepted who he was utterly, even when faced with his own end... He has a serious point in regards to his brothers. They are all so perfect, yet in his eyes they are all killers like him. All Emps had to do was give him more of his time. He is totally at fault handing him that legion so hastily, with hardly any Terran first borns at all. Emps was the worst dad ever quite franlkly lol

I see a lot of similarities between Emps and Konrad. Konrad was made for justice but because his world was so awful he only ever learned how to instill fear and never hope for something better. Sort of how Emps lost touch with his humanity and could not foresee how using his sons callously would lead to the betrayal

A lot of the stories involving the primarchs reveal that the emperor was not a good father. Even when Guillemon returned to meet his father on the golden throne…the emperor calls him his tool, something to be used. Talos and Sevetar are Nightlords with a moral compass. Talos avenged his father’s death and is the protagonist in the nightlords omnibus, an audio book trilogy many others are begging you to read xD
