"Cry Havoc" is one of my favorite stories from A Vox in the Void. The tales of Loyalists from the Traitor Legions are always heart wrenching.

The emotional sting is worse when you consider how intense the gene-induced sense of brotherhood and instinctive loyalty to their primarch is; it's almost a biological need. That's why they were so desperate to have any connection to him.

The companion peice to this, called "abuse", gives further insight into Angron just before he gives the order for the Nails to be implanted.

A sad fact about Angron. The butchers nails that were driven into him robbed him of some of his primarch powers... namely the one which exudes a kind of aura of majesty where space marines and mortals are driven to want to kneel before the primarch and do as they bid..... as well as a kind of unique healing power which was Angron's alone. Before the nails he was able to (almost like the dude in the green mile) take away people's pain and heal minor wounds... the sad thing about Angron, is that he was most likely designed to be a gentle and healing figure, but fate and the nails had other plans.

Yep, if the primarchs were designed with the idea of redundancy in mind, then Angron was probably designed to be the mirror/ partner for Vulcan. Had he lived free from the nails then Angron may very well have been one of the most humane and noble in the brotherhood. A Devine healer and mender of worlds, rather than their devourer.

@@cappinjocj9316 I'd never though of that (who was Vulkans simulacra). Another f'ed up thing about Angron is that he was on the border of Guilliman's 500 worlds, the Emperor swung by to collect Guilliman, basically passed Angron and left him for unnecessary decades on Nuceria. If he'd looked, big E might have gotten to him before the nails.

@@cappinjocj9316 Personally I always liked the Idea that Angron was meant to be paired with Sanguinius in that originally the Blood Angels were always meant to be the terror legion of berserkers to put the fear of the emperor's wrath in the Imperium's traitors and enemies alike, and feel like the red thirst/black rage were intended as a design feature rather than a flaw. With this in mind I believe Angron's original role was that the Warhounds were meant to be paired with the Blood Angels, keeping them in check while preventing them from being lost to their rage.

Before Horus betrayed the emperor, he must first destroy the loyalist contingent within his forces, and his allies to ensure total commitment to the cause. They killed 1/3 of their forces in the ensuing conflict. The Istvaan 3 atrocity is such a tragedy.

Funny story about Cry Havoc. I was talking to someone at my local gamestore about how the first army I was building was WE and he recommend this to listen to. On the drive home I did just that, and by the end I was die hard loyalist demanding death to all traitors! So in the end it did the opposite of me loving them more and loving what they could have been. 40k is very tragic but that is part of the charm. I did end up finishing my army and it is fun to play (despite being filthy chaos haha).

Vox in the void is awesome, especially when he goes full GRIM dark, things like the Prey Sight series, or “the gods are dead” series. For stuff that leans more towards dark humour, I highly recommend Baldermort and his Ork narratives about Kronan Da Kunnin, and his inquisition narrative.

The people of your world named you "Great One". The people of mine called me slave. Which one of us landed on a paradise of civilization to be raised by a foster father, Roboute? Which one of us was given armies to lead after training in the halls of the Macraggian High Riders? Which one of us inherited a strong, cultured kingdom? And which one of us had to rise up against a kingdom with nothing but a horde of starving slaves? Which one of us was a child enslaved on a world of monsters, with his brain cut up by carving knives? Listen to your blue clad wretches yelling courage and honor, courage and honor, courage and honor! Do you even know the meaning of those words? Courage is fighting the kingdom which enslaves you, no matter that their armies outnumber yours by ten-thousand to one. You know nothing of courage! Honor is resisting a tyrant when all others suckle and grow fat on the hypocrisy he feeds them. You know nothing of honor!”

The tragedy of Angron is that he just wanted to fight and die with his friends. And he was denied seeing them die or even getting vengeance. They died not knowing where he went or if he'd return nor last words. He still retains that and that is what drives him even now.

  • @MrHoneuma

It's worth noting that it's highly likely that the World Eaters are NOT Angron's legion. The War Hounds were one of the oldest legions in existence, having even taken part in the Unification Wars, meaning they potentially predate the Primarch Project, and were always bloodthirsty killers. To add to that, by the typical rules of primarch gene-seed, they should have been been more gentle and healers, since thats what Angron was supposed to be. Instead, they were already like he was post-nails and a lifetime of suffering. It would go a long way as to explaining why there was no connection between Angron and the legion no matter what they did. Chances are, he was given lefotovers from the 2nd or 11th, or the War Hounds did in fact predate the Primarchs.

This is an amazing story. I can't wait till you learn more about Astartes and about Angron so you can understand why even after he was betrayed and left to die, his hearts still fluttered when he saw approval in his dad's eyes. This is also why, again, I highly recommend only listening to "Abuse" only after you've learned about Angron and the Legion. Daddy issues are a theme that's way too prevalent in 40k lmao
