The twin diesel is probably the best power pack the Sherman had. The big Ford V8 is cooler, but the diesels would have been drop-dead reliable. And loud, very loud.

Their variations would have another 'life' in the IDF. Eager for arms... the new state of Israel would 'paw through' the junk yards of Europe (early 50's) looking for military tanks that could be taken back to Israel, refurbished and re-purposed. In films of the 1967 Six Day War you will see a few of these in use. Finally France (for a while) would become Israel's principle arms supplier. However, many WW II surplus 'goods' would appear again in the hands of the IDF as France handed off its remaining U.S. Lend/Lease 'stuff' to Israel... as well as selling new French arms to them.

Yes, through lend-lease the British were supplied with several models of Sherman including the M4, M4A1, M4A2 and M4A4. In British service these tanks received the following designations. M4 became Sherman I M4A1became Sherman II M4A2 became Sherman III M4A4 became Sherman V Furthermore the letters A, B and C were used to denote if the tank possessed a different main gun than the 75mm M4. A was for the 76mm, B was or the 105mm and C was or the 17 pounder. A Sherman IB was a M4 with the 105mm M4 howitzer. A Sherman IIA for an M4A1 with the 76mm M1 gun and a Sherman VC was a M4A4 with the 17 pounder.

The Sherman tank isn't a good tank with no good armor and weak firepower, but somehow it always has an attractive look. Sherman's charm never fades.

  • @derekbaker3279

When the Sherman was designed, military doctrine for tanks was very different than it became later in WWII. The Great Britain, Germany, France & the U.S.A. all viewed the tank as a means of support for the infantry, as well a means to break through infantry-based defences & then wreak havoc in the enemy's rear (logistics, command & communication, etc.) At that time, all nations viewed anti-tank guns as the primary means of engaging enemy armour, and in the case of the U.S.A. & Germany, lightly armoured 'tank destroyers' that could quickly move to areas where the enemy had broken through were designed & used. So, for its intended purpose, the M4 Sherman was a good tank, and - despite difficulties with terrain, it proved itself in battles against the Japanese. It also proved to be reliable & durable, which was important for tanks in offensive roles (and something German tanks lacked, especially the Tiger I & Tiger II tanks). Unfortunately, by the time the M4 Sherman arrived in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, western Europe, and as a supplement to Soviet tank production via the Lend Lease Act, it was usually inadequate for dealing with enemy tanks, but it still performed well in its intended role (against infantry). The Sherman did become more effective after the British quickly up-gunned some of their Shermans with the excellent 17-pounder anti-tank gun, and eventually, once Shermans with a better anti-tank gun & thinker armour began to arrive from factories in the North America.

@@derekbaker3279 you are fucking wrong in multiple times! The Americans design the M4 Medium as a general purpose export tank meant for various roles but mostly used a exploitation vehicle. It can do and will do everything the commander needs it, infantry support, cover for infantry, AT if it encounters any armor, destroy fortifications and any enemy combatants it comes across, or even an indirect fire battery. And it does it's job adequately, it's armor is 90mm of effective armor, the main gun being adequate in 1942 being able to pierce contemporary tanks of the time, and it's better than Germany's current Workhorse the PzKpfW 4 even with their 7.5cm long cannons. And the British didn't see tanks as infantry support solely, they have "cruisers(cavalry)" and infantry support, The US view tanks differently, Germans also, they view tanks as exploitation vehicles, infantry support, and a spearhead in fast paced offensive. The original Pz1 and 2s were the original workhorse of the "Blitzkrieg", and the US had the M4 imitating this, massive numbers of tanks and mechanized infantry moving in frightening speed. The US TD doctrine is defensive and the battalions of TDs are supplementary to other battalions, TDs are meant to blunt mass enemy armor, and the practical use of TDs are support fire. The Sherman Firefly was used by British only, and it was good only in AT role. And it was cramped and slow to fire. The 76mm is better fit than the 17pdr, but even then American crews prefer 75mm for Normandy. Why? Germans like to shoot tanks with big guns.

I thought the A2 is where they changed over to the flat faced front hull to get rid of the shot traps. Looks like the front of a standard M4. Obviously not the radial engine so I think that would be one of the Sherman III’s the US made for the Brits, No? I could be wrong. I’m no expert.

@@darkwarrior860 the only version that looks a bit different armor wise is the A1 with the cast (rounded) hull. The differences between them are related to power plants (radial gas aero Wright, diesel twin GM, v8 Ford GAA, Chrysler multibank that required a longer hull design), suspension types (vertical or horizontal volute), track width, wether there was a dry or wet ammo storage, turret design and gun sizes.
