Inside the Persecuted Church of North Korea

How is the church in North Korea growing amidst persecution? In this episode of Hard to Reach, Steven Morales talks with Eric Foley, the CEO of Voice of Martyrs Korea, to learn how the North Korean church is not only growing, but has played a role in missionary work in some of the hardest places on earth. Then, we hear from Luke, an Afghan pastor, who first heard the gospel from Korean Christians who bravely shared the gospel with him in Afghanistan.

My grandparents were children in South Korea shortly after the war. They grew up in poverty and near-famine conditions. My grandfather found a church as a child and led his (still remaining) family to it. My grandmother was a pastor's daughter. Not only have they set an example for me on what Christians can and should look like, but also how a husband and a wife shoule love each other. My grandfather is now ill and nearing the end of his days, but I have faith that God will receive his spirit. Pray for us if you would, that God's will would be done in our lives and that he would use us for his purposes even til the end of our lives. Edit: Thank you everyone. Hope to see you all in heaven!

I was a missionary in Korea in the 70's. My favorite church was in a village in a hut on a dirt floor. The people asked me about America. They said they would pray that God would send missionaries to America. Their simplicity touched me deeply. I found the Koreans to be in love with Christ. Many were persecuted for various reasons. Once I spoke in a youth rally for Campus crusade for Christ. There were over 3,000 young adults enthused for Jesus. I will never for get their vibrant singing. Their faces aglow. Their politeness warmed my heart. One of my most impressive memories was a time I sat by a lake at a Christian college watching students stand on a raft holding candles in the evening glow. They sang from their heart, "I'd rather have Jesus than anything?" That after glow remained with me! From the orphans singing gustily, "With Jesus in the family-happy home and Yes Jesus loves me.' To a Bible study with 20 adult singing acapella- "Jesus is all the world to me." I learned that music was their way of expressing their deep faith in Christ! They converted me.

I grew up christian but fell away from the Lord as I got older. In 2021 i moved to Korea to teach and was invited to an English church here. It has changed my life and restored my faith and I’m so thankful. I never imagined this is what my life would look like after moving here tbh. The ppl here are very passionate and its so interesting how many different services and outreach works there are. I am saddened that Korea unfortunately also has a lot of false teachers (사이비/cults) but there are many biblically based churches here working to help those in these cults. Anyways great work on these videos and I pray one day North Koreans will be able to practice their faith openly. 축복합니다!

I never comment on videos but this time I had to. As I finished this third episodes, I fall on my knees crying, realising how great our Lord is ! I realised how strong the faith of our brothers and sisters in North Korea is, them who suffer and die because of their faith in Christ even though they may have not access to the whole Bible ! I cried because I realised how I struggle to put Jesus in the center of my life with all the comfort I have. I cried because I've realised how in my country in the center of Europe, we struggle to proclaim His Kingdom and we may need to be strengthened by the Holy Spirit because we may be spiritually poor. I pray that here in my country, Switzerland, and in Europe, we could see again generations fulfilled by the presence of God and not afraid to walk and die for Him, because He is the one that matters ! Radical team, I'm always astonished by the quality of your videos, continue the good work !

Years ago, when news of humongous revivals and church attendance in S. Korea was going around, I heard someone once joke, to the effect of, "If the numbers are to be believed, the entire population of S. Korea has been saved three times." On a serious note, I also read the following about house churches in communist China, "In China, a small group of believers gathered weekly in the back room of a small store to worship together. Since they could easily be overheard by anyone who entered the store, they engaged in what they called, 'silent singing.' Someone would whisper the name of the song they would like to sing, and they would silently move their lips as they simply thought of the words and music." Such powerful beauty, even in silence.

I am a South Korean praying for North Korea. Although I have no ancestors from North Korea, I want to pray for North Korea and dedicate myself to unification until my last moments. God's law states that when there is an ebb of the sea, there is a high tide. Just as the gospel spread from Pyongyang to South Korea, now is the time for the gospel to spread from South Korea to North Korea. I believe that when pessimistic thoughts reach the bottom, they change back to positive and the direction is reversed. When Jesus was killed, it was despair, but when he came back to life and was resurrected, it becomes the gospel to us. The coming of missionaries to Korea was not just a coincidence; it was God's plan for the country of Korea, and we who lost our country and were uncivilized now exist by the grace of God. For those who have forgotten it, God wants them to remember and return. Korea!! confess your sins and return to God Again, I believe God is preparing us.

This is the prophecy about the second coming of Jesus Zechariah 13:7 “Awake, sword, against my shepherd, against the man who is close to me!” declares the LORD Almighty. “Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered, and I will turn my hand against the little ones. The Shepherd here is Jesus. John 10:11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. This is the fulfillment of the prophecy. Matthew 26:31 Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written: “’I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ This happened near 30 to 33 AD. Hosea 6:1-2 Come, let us return to the LORD. He has torn us to pieces but he will heal us; he has injured us but he will bind up our wounds. After two days he will revive us; on the third day he will restore us, that we may live in his presence. In prophecies 1day is equal to 1000 years. Which means after two thousand years Jesus will return again. And on the third day which is the 3rd millennium, we will live in his sight. We all know we cannot see God's face and live on Earth. So it's the second coming of Jesus. Luke 21:11 ► There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven. Matthew 24:6 You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. We are the witnesses of all these things. From the death of Jesus to 2030 - 2033 there are 2000 years. Jesus is coming soon. Let's all repent and turn from our old ways and turn to the Lord. Praise the Lord. Peace and Love to you all A verse to show about the Holy Trinity Isaiah 9:6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Everlasting Father?. There's your answer The whole world will turn against Israel and not just Palestinians. Then know the end is near. This is a major sign to look for in the end times. God bless you all Please spread this message to the ends of the world. I have a KZread channel which is focused on different Bible topics, so consider subscribing .

Because our King Jesus was also persecuted, and after His resurrection He went to a great persecutor of Christians named Saul, and healed His sight and made him the greatest evangelist in history. From that moment he became known as Paul and wrote most of the New Testament in the Bible while being persecuted himself in a prison cell for his faith in Jesus.

How happy it is to see my brothers and sisters from different countries here in the comments! Friends, please pray for my country too (I live in Russia). There are a lot of good and sincere Christians here, but we can’t do anything on our own, we need God’s help and His wisdom. It pains me greatly to see the suffering of those whom I cannot help. I try to pray, but so far my prayers have not been answered... My country really needs God

Notice how the people who God blessed with freedom of choice, chose and choose to ignore him. But those who have no religious freedom and or freedom at all, choose to acknowledge him. This is clear statistics as to why God allows bad things to happen, people would see no need for God and lose their way. It’s in our most vulnerable moments can we see the truth, that we are nothing without him. God have mercy for our brothers and sisters who face persecution for His name sake, may they inherit the kingdom of God !

It should not be that way, but you are right. It is true. Our intellect and ability to grow as humans come from God. Ironically, we ignore him and think “secular humanism” gave us this whereas true humanism historically was rooted in Christian thinking. It is no coincidence that modern science grew up in the West. Not that Europeans are special, but an affinity to Christ naturally allows development.

@@BabyBugBug yes the West especially influenced by the liberal philosophers became arrogant and think that they know everything and don’t need God and when things go bad, they blame God, it’s never their own fault, other people’s fault or the devil’s. They dare to judge the holy God because things went wrong in their lives or in the world when they themselves are filthy sinners and committed a lot of sins and mistakes deliberately or not.

I remember as an African we had a preacher one sunday who had the previlege to vist Chinese hidden churches and he said they take the gospel/faith soo serious unlike here in e. Africa because of persecution. He prepared a 2 hr sermon and had to preach for hours because they just wanted more. The bible was not complete but in peaces of papers and every word was soo valuable to them. And because of that they have alot of biblical miracles still taking place their unlike here which is mostly history . In the end the preacher just told us not to take advantage of the grace we have here (Tanzania) and be lazy in faith. That was in 2013 hope currently/future the pentecostal churches have more freedom and get more recognition in persecuted countries.

18:02 The Korean church has their discipline for prayer. There's a tradition called "Se-Byuck-Gi-Do", early morning prayer. You can find people praying in church every morning at 5 AM. Perhaps, we can join them in and pray for the people in North Korea and for the church in South Korea. And maybe a glorious revival is just around the corner.

@jesusislord4610. I am not an expert, but I know that Islam is growing rapidly in the UK. Mostly through immigration, but also through conversion of indigenous British people. Muslims also tend to have lots of children, unlike secular or Christian Britons. For decades, Muslim leaders like Anjem Choudary have stated that their goal is to make the UK a Muslim country. They are making tremendous political progress. The mayor of London, Sadik Khan, is a Bangladeshi Muslim. The former first Minister of Scotland was a Pakistani Muslim, Hamza Yousaf. Recent elections in Yorkshire brought a number of Muslims into parliament. The reason, I think, is that the traditional churches, the indigenous churches, like the Church of England, the Church of Scotland, the Methodist and Baptist churches, and the Roman Catholic Churches are in decline. Most indigenous British people seem to have turned away from God, very few believe in the Bible or Jesus. Most white British churches have shrinking attendance, low rates of Baptism and marriages in the church, and elderly members. Many churches are being closed. I think Islam has entered the void that a declining church has left. However immigrant churches are growing, often Pentecostal churches, sometimes evangelical. Some of these churches are attracting indigenous British people, as well.

In the 1980s, the magazine Moody Monthly published an article about the 13 Soviet-block countries in Europe. The article concerned the state of Christianity and the growth of the church in relation to the severity of communism against Christianity in each of the 13 countries. In short, the less persecuted the church was, the less Strength the church had and the less the gospel was noticeably effective. And the worst the persecution, the more of the gospel was effective. The most severe country against Christianity was Romania, And that country had the greatest growth in Christian conversions.
