Inside the NSA: An Evening with General Michael Hayden

After the attacks, at the request of the White House, Hayden intensified and expanded NSA wiretapping operations of various communications between Americans and terrorist suspects abroad in hopes of detecting and preventing another terrorist attack. These initial efforts were executed without a court order and after being revealed by The New York Times, were subsequently placed under judicial review. Over time, the NSA’s efforts grew into the multidimensional programs exposed by Edward Snowden, including the collection and storage of phone and email metadata covering billions of calls and messages between American citizens.
In conversation with Amy Zegart, General Hayden provides an insider’s account about the origins and development of the NSA programs. He discusses the directives and mechanisms to control them, and the disagreements within the Bush administration about the extent of the wiretapping. He offers his views on the justification, legal status, scale, and effectiveness of the NSA monitoring.

@@ericwilson6994 I highly doubt he was the mastermind behind 9/11 but he was damn sure involved. He took over the nsa right before 9/11 and kicked out the guys that wrote the stellar wind project and that was actually looking for terrorist. These guys are the terrorist. He sounds reasonable, even handed and very aware of his charter. Its true that running a security organisation in a democracy is a very fine line to walk... it all comes down to what we have, and how much we are willing to give away in order to feel safe. He's a knowledgeable chap, but the degree of freedom we surrender isn't his call. Its ours.

That is a key requirement of being a Director of an Intelligence agency. One has to try to probe him robustly by being sharper than him. No easy thing to do. Nevertheless an interesting discussion.

15:15 min ... "there's a prohibition in NSA against reverse targeting ". That sort of sounds heartening - the idea, at least, that something like that was thought through. It seems like one of those things which almost seem innocuous, at least on the face of it, if not previously already introduced to the terminology, definitions and without having had a chance to let it absorb. It seems like it could so easily be dismissed as not an issue or like it would not be difficult to unwittingly go ahead with a sort of false premise without really being aware of it in the moment, even if in a sense it academically understood. Another concept that might be not dissimilar, in that it might also seem almost innocuous, would be if those with a burden proof to prove something, made a presumption that a reversed onus of proof was applicable, in expecting others for whom any proof may be about, to either disprove that about themselves yet to be proved, or, to prove that about themselves yet to be proved for those seeking to prove that and or needing to prove that in the first place. Oh ... that looks like ... in of itself ... procurement ? ... oh dear ... 19:36 min ... Need a break, so, pure imagination - reflections on a "Dr No", James Bond scene (not sure what I've written actually, so here, you are forwarned): 0:54 min ... "not get killed, and another thing, ... since I've been head of MI7 there's been a 40% drop in 00 operative casualties, and I want it to stay that way." It comes across like M genuinely really cares about lives within MI7, and the life of MI7. It sounds like central to M's command and people, and of MI7, responsibility to minimise casualties, loss of lives, loss of life, loss of limb(s), the risk of being put in harms way, injured, pain and suffering, and minimise the risk of needing to go to casualty, needing to recover in casualty, and, for those who work in casualty, to minimise exposure to loss of lives, loss of life, loss of limb(s), injury, pain and suffering, to minimise the risk of casualties, of becoming a casualty, as a result. It seems like M's intention, is to maintain, at the very least, the achievement made by M's people and of MI7, in a 40% drop of 00 operative casualties, including M's responsibility to and for 007, of MI7, and, in preserving the body of M's central command responsibility to all for all in mind, at the heart of M's command. He sounds like a car salesman, very accurate in some areas, and then the big sale which we all have to buy his pitch, is that Snowden is an asshole. And if we don't believe that, then he hasn't sold that idea to us well enough. he offers too little specifics on why snowden is wrong, other than we just have to trust him, after all look at all the accurate things he says in everything else, he must be telling the truth that snowden is wrong.

General Hayden would be a much better spokesperson for a dictatorial or communist nation. He has no understanding of the right to personal privacy or the constitution, or a democracy. He would have been reading snail mail for Nixon in an earlier government and feeding J. Edgar Hoover political information. He is one of the most unintelligent human beings in the nation as a spokesperson in a free nation, acting as a tyrannical big brother human being trained in a military system that is more communist than any Communist nation. The Pentagon is out of control almost totally corrupt and has never been financially audited or told to account for itself by the oval office, or any party in government or any president . Pit bulls need leashes or they turn on you like Hayden when questioned .
