Hands-on experiences with exotic animals are thriving, boosted by social media. But behind the scenes, animals involved in tourism often lead miserable lives. In this short documentary, National Geographic writer Natasha Daly investigates wildlife tourism in Thailand, where many visitors seek interactions with elephants.

In many cases, captive experiences with exotic animals rely on abusive training or treatment. To learn more, you can read on here: on.natgeo.com/2Q3vhBT

Nat.Geo. Love your videos. It's a tough time for wildlife. Shrinking habitats from logging & farm's. Which is better for elephants? Living free for a few years on a reserve before a poacher gets you. Or, live in captivity working until you die? I know there are laws, but not all laws are enforced.

Thats false! The vast majority of captive experiences with animals have regulations, inspections, and laws and take very good care of their animals. Just because one bad trainer abuses their animals does not mean all animal handlers abuse theirs. Get the fact straight National Geographic!

Funny thing is that stopping this would be an absolutely horrible idea as something even worse would just take its place. I mean do you know what they do in this country to get money? The criminals there won’t even hesitate to illegally harvest organs from people and in many cases just leave what’s left at the side of the road. If they were to shut down the animal entertainment things would get sooo much worse.

witty net they finished by showing a tourist spot that was doing it a little more ethically by using a barrier between the guests and elephants, so they can walk up to be fed a handful of peanuts or whatever and pose for a picture, and walk away at their pleasure without risk of trampling to the human. They’re still in captivity but there’s no direct, physical cruelty, and their tourist interactions are at will, on their own terms.

I went to Thailand a few years ago. I was in Chian Mai in an elephant camp watching a show. We had hired a guide and asked him if the elephants were treated well. He assured us they had a much better life than those who worked from dusk till dawn in the timber industry dragging cut trees in the woods until exhaustion. But this documentary is an eye opener to me.

We can blame the animals they can’t even speak what they are really feels it’s kinda abusing. Animal is not a toy they have there own lives they deserve a freedom and live to what they belong. Socia media can be part for this solution as we spread this. And also we can’t pay the animals for entertainment. We need to help them live a life they deserve.

We like to think we can "take care" of these animals, but in reality, we clearly can't. We just have to make sure these animals are safe from us. They were and will always be happily and perfectly fine in nature by themselves. It's us who meddled in the harmony of nature and destroyed their habitat

It's complex. Most of the elephants going throught situations like these, were born or grew in captivity: logging, entertainment business and other unnatural conditions. They never experimented life in the wild neither personal space. To give an example, elephants are nocturnal and most of these sleep at night due to following a human routine. The point is, there will always exist an interest from our side to get close to wild animals. If we can do it in a more conscious way and respecting their past and present existence, maybe in very long period some can learn how to stay free and in the wild again.

I was in a zoo once with a couple of crocodiles around. I was in a cage with a balcony where you can toss food near those animals so you can feed them. They actually pause in place with their mouths wide open, which is telling that it wants to be feed. When one of the staff or tourists throws food near the crocodiles, they actually react to it and start going for it. It is a first come, first server approach. So whoever gets to the meat first gets to eat. When there is no more food around, these crocodiles remained in place. I don't know if they are just stay there or not. First time I've came in they were all scattered. When I bought some meat from the staff and throw it to their cage, they went for it and one of them takes the meat. After that all of them remains in place. Yeah it may sound weird if the crocodiles in the zoo only react to things that are moving around their area, but that's how they do I guess.

Thank you for educating us about the cruelty involved in Wildlife Tourism. Thank you for sharing better options for us to experience wildlife without endangering the animals. So many people don't realize what is going on, and the way to stop this abuse is to raise awareness among consumers and empower them. If we want this abusive practice to stop, then the consumer has to stop demanding certain experiences. Most people want to do the right thing, but are not aware. Life demands almost 100% of our attention just to take care of our own families and communities, so videos like these are of great outreach tool.
