The Fenders sound more balanced. The Aguilars sound to hifi for the 70s vibe.

Would love to see a comparison without compression and other filtration/augmentation effects, with both basses totally flat EQ. IMO, that is when any differences become blatantly apparent.

good comparison thank you. i think i'll take the more open Fenders. have you tried SJB-1s? those are my fav jazz bass pickup. of course every pair is a little different with SJBs since they are handwound. thanks again man.

Was thinking of putting Aguilars in my new 70's Vintera Jazz bass, but after hearing this, Im sticking with the stock P/Ups, but will use a John East pre

Too much fret buzz for my taste. The Aguilars sound a bit cleaner, but I don't know if there's a major improvement overall.

the fender 70s sound great. that's the sound you only get from a jazz. I was lucky enough to have original 73 pickups out of an old American that was switched to alembic activators. they simply do not make things the way they used too

Aguilar has more attack and growl while the Fender is warmer and has that nasaly tone. Aguilar would be amazing through tubes other than that I would prefer Fenders. Both sound great. You should do a shootout with these 2 and EMG J and MEC J.

Why do I sometimes see Marcus Miller Basses with this headstock, and other times the Fender logo is up higher under the string tree?

Great playing, brother. Your fingers make the huge part of your spice sound for sure. But man, these Aguilars sound killer. Bit more output, a bit more "dirty" and so dynamic and accentuated in the mids. I've ordered a set of AG 4j-HC for my old J and I'm really looking forward to trying them out. All the best & stay safe.

I just bought a Squire VM Deluxe Jazz brought it home and ran the stock pickups thru a Hartke preamp/ DI box and am in love with the stock pickups. I swapped for a Squire High Mass bridge but will leave the bass as it came otherwise. It is hard to beat the Fender sound and if that is what you want, the Squire VM series capture it, making costly upgrades superfluous.

Definitely the Fenders all the way!! The Aguilars sound weak in the bottom end, too thin sounding. Are those the pickups that are found in a 74 Jazz Bass?

I know this is about pickups, but why is your action so low that you are buzzing all over the place? To me, all the buzzing distracts me too much from being able to judge the pickups. At any rate, sound is a personal preference thing, so it will never happen that everybody agrees on what sounds best. It also depends on what riff you are playing, and how you are playing it. For this particular riff, my opinion is that the Fender pickups with Aguilar preamp starting at 3:26 sounds best, followed by Fender pickups with Active preamp starting at 4:27 in second place.
