Inside The $400,000 Robinson R22 Helicopter
This is the Robinson R22, a two-seater, piston-powered helicopter that has been such an iconic staple in the aviation industry that it has earned its spot as the world’s most popular light helicopter.
When the Robinson R22 was first introduced to the market in 1979, the price for a new unit was approximately $40,000 before options, but now the price for a pre-owned Robinson R22 ranges between $100,000 and $400,000, and the charter price is estimated at $500 to $1,000 per hour.
While the annual fixed cost is roughly $15,000 to $30,000, the average hourly operating cost is estimated at $150 to $300.

I started flying them in 1985... They're simple and reliable compared to many other helicopters. Contrast with an Enstrom with Lamiflex bearings that wear out and often are unobtainable for months and months. The only thing is, they're not great for student pilots and private owners who don't keep current. They're very nimble which is great for an experienced pilot, but can bite hard for a rusty or inexperienced pilot. Like any helicopter, there are flaws; things I'd like to see changed. But they are the most affordable helicopter in the world. If you fly them cautiously, and treat them with respect, they can be great machines to fly. But like any helicopter, you can get in over your head very quickly if you're not cautious.

But at what price for those that worry about money? Some don't and I get that.
