Inside Look at The Enhanced Games With Brett Fraser, Chief Athletes Officer | The Drop E177

Look, we had to know what they were all about, so we went straight to the source. Brett Fraser is the Chief Athletes Officer for the Enhanced Games, a sporting event without drug testing, billed as "an alternative to the corrupt Olympic Games."
This is an open conversation about the persistence of drugs in sport, the idea of "scientifically-enhanced" athletes, and whether or not that's a good thing or a bad thing for sport overall. There are definitely two sides to this issue and both have certain merits, whether you agree or not. Either way, we're interested to see how it plays out over the next year and a half.

I appreciate the entertainment value in this interview and props to Thomas and Robbe for keeping it respectful. The values presented here with regard to medical experimentation is antithetical to those that Kara Goucher had been endorsing. It’s my expectation that when you release the flood gates, you’re not going to get well-intentioned doctors looking out for the athletes, but bunch of shady drug traffickers who constantly tread the unsafe lines, playing with the lives of desperate athletes. I hope we’re past the mistakes of Marco Pantani, Alexandre Vinokourov… Lance.

@@tkbuz I have another crazy theory: the actual Enhanced Games isn’t what they are going for, and this is all viral marketing to create the buzz around IOC’s corruption and athlete compensation.

Did my run this morning listening to this podcast, and I just had to laugh at it. "We're creating a new version of the sport where anything is allowed, and that levels the playing field." This kind of logic doesn't make sense, and it certainly doesn't retain any shred of morality. The athlete who can take as many "enhancements" without killing themselves will win. If your solution to the doping issues in "clean" sports is simply to allow the doping, why not apply this logic to society? "Well we can't keep drugs off the street, so let's just legalize them all!" This is insane, and I hope it crashes and burns before any athletes are seriously injured or killed.

The obvious flaw is that most of the drugs are both illegal for most use and unhealthy. Many people competing based on the highest volume use might not live past 45, and eventually an athlete would die during training.

Especially when competing in the enhanced category, why wouldn't you just take as much as possible to gain an advantage? Or rather to be competetive, because everyone is doing that. I worry that, depending on what is allowed, athletes will unknowingly (or knowingly) kill themselves in pursuit of performance.

@@sidewinder4718 that's a good point; if people can use all the steroids, SARMs, and GH they want why not amphetamines during the performances too. eventually it would go too far.

Even if the logistics worked out, it would just become an arms race of people willing to push more and more dangerous steroid protocols to optimize performance for one day. Unintended consequences are sometimes hard to foresee, but so many deal-breaker issues become obvious with even a whiff of scrutiny.

I’ve got two questions First, if the athletes are competing in the same race, are they going to differentiate who is enhanced and who is not enhance? Second, is there concern about people who participate and it ruining their reputation for any other race that they do going forward? If a racer said they were enhanced, they would pretty much be banned from ever placing a race again or have huge doubts if they went clean.

Not a certainty for sure. I think it’s a bold idea, but it will be very interesting to see what athletes and sponsors would be willing to associate themselves with this type of event. But I certainly applaud them for trying!

  • @jodibeck

The reason for drug testing is not just to have a fair playing field, but to protect the athletes. Let’s get real if their is bucket loads of cash on the line those athlete’s who need the money or are money focused are going to take the drugs to the limit and unfortunately to far. This is a terrible idea. The organisers are trying to place liability on the athletes, but I predict they will be sued through the courts or even prosecuted. I can’t see sponsors of reputable companies openly putting their reputation on the line to support this. I do agree that the head organisation of sport is not supporting athletes and this is the need to be addressed.

@lucasdimoveo the drugs don't just magically disappear and leave you with no long-term effects. It's a bit like smoking, everything is fine until later in life when you find out you have lung cancer. The fact that we already know that the performance enhancing drugs have long term effects as a sporting body they can't be seen to as putting money before the health of the athletes.

Anabolic steroids can cause severe, long-lasting, and in some cases, irreversible damage. They can lead to early heart attacks, strokes, liver tumors, kidney failure, and psychiatric problems. In addition, stopping steroid use can cause depression, often leading to resumption of use. Reference: National Institute of Drug Abuse

I personally dont have an issue with it. If they have their own platform to compete and its fair in that they can all do it…. Thats fine imo. As long as they’re not competing against clean athletes who aren’t using it. The bottom line with all of this, the playing field has to be fair. Whether with or without drugs. Horse Racing has this problem with horses running on meds and some clean. Its not fair or level competitively and or for bettors . There has to be a governing body to control the FAIRNESS of competition. The idea of clean vs enhanced is silly though…. Thats basically what’s already going on so it’s back to square 1….. also…. It has to be Adults only obviously. From an “ Entertainment “ aspect…. I guess its kind of like Gladiators where everyday Joes vs Pros go head to head.

its an insane idea, and interesting thing to hear about. Idk where it will go, anyone commenting thinking most pro sports are currently clean/natty are unfortunately dreaming. Not a fan of the way IOC/Olympics treats athletes or the countries they use either. EPO is the drug that affects how much oxygen your blood can carry.

If they put up enough prize money the athletes will come for sure!!!! People need to realize that different PED’s will be used for different events.. A sprinter can’t get to heavy so they can’t use a size building drug. We already have non tested powerlifting federations. So they don’t expect big changes. Gymnastics yes, we will see improvements but again these people can’t get to big. Also stimulates being allowed could make big differences too. The “Clean” sports are definitely not clean, if you believe that you lost your mind. Just like any drug, there is use and abuse. Abuse will not win this competition because if you aren’t well you can’t compete. Not to mention Drs will be monitoring the athletes. Put up that big money and we will see something special!!!! 👍🏽

As a former cyclist, I sadly recall the era when the testing was not up to the doping (couldn’t detect EPO for one) and guys in their early 20’s were dying of heart attacks or whatever they decided to call it when his blood was much to thick to pump through his body as he slept. I don’t think that’s something that should be revisited ever again. Take all the testing away and the body count will climb and anyone that promotes this is culpable in those deaths. How could this guy live with himself for promoting this reckless of an idea?

If the parents have enough money to pay for their baby's CRISPR treatment, would they be inclined to tweak traits related to professional running? Sounds like a pretty expensive and time-consuming undertaking, especially given how unlucrative professional running is. Maybe there are really bored rich people who want to take up that hobby.
