Inside Korea's Largest Illegal Slum, Guryong Village 🇰🇷
🌎 GANGNAM, SEOUL: Guryong village is an illegal shanty town built in 1988, located in the Gangnam district. In 1988, South Korea held the summer olympics, but it was also the year the government set out to eliminate past vestiges of authoritarian rule and make the government more democratic. Freedom of the press was expanded, university autonomy recognised, and restrictions on overseas travels were lifted. Before 1988, it was extremely hard for Koreans to obtain a passport!
1988 was a prosperous year, and a turning point for the country. However, it also displaced a lot of poor people from their homes. Koreans were evicted from houses in low-income areas that were demolished during the city's rapid development for the 1988 Olympic Games. They came to Guryong village as their last refuge.

I was born in Korea and lived here for 26 years but I've never heard of Guryong village. Today, huge fire burnt Guryong village and lots of people there were harmed and damaged. I got to know of the village by the news and searched it up on YT, then this video came up. Absolutely stunned by knowing such place existed. Thanks for letting us know the unknown side of Korea. The land price in Guryong Village in the video is very expensive. It's not because the people who live there are all poor. @@18nomah To be more precise, Guryong Village is home to real landowners and just illegal residents. In fact, illegal residents have been fortunate enough to be recognized as real landlords in the past(For the convenience of administrative work) So, when the government planned to redevelop the Guryong Village, it gave the illegal residents a condition that they would lease luxury apartments indefinitely. In short, they got the chance to live in a very nice house for free. But these squatters are asking the government to give them houses, not rental apartments. The house is worth about $5000000. This is much more than a lottery winning. It doesn't make sense to give it to everyone who lives there. Because of people's selfishness, that area is currently being delayed in development. You don't have to pity the people who live there.
Once on picnic in the countryside an old rice farmer took us to see his mud wall and floor hatched house. It was like going back in time by a 100 years. He was very proud of his tiny humble home.

So I came to this video myself. It was a great video, but I'm leaving a comment to tell you something wrong. 1. First of all, the location of this video is very safe to view as "slum." In fact, Korean security is very good everywhere, but especially here, it is a very good place. 2. It actually belongs to a place where house prices are very, very expensive. It's an area that's about to be redeveloped. It's making house prices several times more expensive than other provinces. It is still a decent place to live. It is clean and just like normal village in other parts of asia
These "slum" residents can move to any modern apartments they wish, but every time the city or a private organization comes to them with an offer, they request a ludicrous amount of money because they believe that the land prices will continue to increase. It's the same story with all the old worn out neighborhoods in Seoul

Have you seen my recent videos from my LET'S GU series? I cover this topic and visit all the old areas of the city!
I am Korean This village is the most expensive district in Seoul. The residents of this place are evil-doers who scramble for more compensation. Selling just one house in this town is enough for $300,000.

The land price in Guryong Village in the video is very expensive. It's not because the people who live there are all poor. The place will soon be redeveloped and residents of Guryong Village can have very expensive apartments. (For reference, Guryong Village is located in Gangnam, and apartments in Gangnam cost about $5000000.)

Glad you made this video, the Korea off 2022 that the government don`t want people to see. Samsung, Hyundai, KIA are the smiling faces of successful commerce in Korea. My Son moved there 9 years ago to teach English in a 학원 for one year, he never came back, now has a lovely Korean wife and a new 손자 😁 They now live in Jeju island. I was shocked to see elderly people in bare feet at 2 or 3 in the morning pulling carts in alley ways to get cardboard from various business. My perception of Korea was turned upside down. Pensioners get a pension of $450 per month, pensioner poverty in Korea is utterly shocking. So glad you made this video mate, its a shocking situation, feel so bad for them.

I'm glad your son stayed there and he's lucky to be living on Jeju island! In Korea you're supposed to respect your elders, but the old people are left to collect cardboard in the streets to make a living. Makes you think. Hope you enjoy my other videos from Korea and also around the world. Dan

When Korea was poor, ordinary people went to school even when they were starving, and there are many people who sacrificed their lives by taking 2 days off a month and working more than 12 hours a day.

Once upon a time, in Korea, it was natural for children to support their parents, and today's elderly are a generation that sacrificed themselves for their parents & children in a poor country.

Perhaps ironically, it is a village that remains because SK became free goverment. During the dictatorship, there were many cases of forcing residents out of those places and build buildings. It is often seen in K-dramas or movies set in the 80s and 90s.

Hmm I am a critic of bloggers as I love watching different ones. But I have to say, you seem to be the most informative and most credible that I have watched, even with your silly mustache. But I do enjoy your videos and I like that you are not doing it just to meet women. You show class and that is appreciated. Keep up the good work and be safe. I like the Korean gentleman, seemed very humble and very handy. I too am an older gentleman from California that has seen and done soo much so not easily impressed. but the way you interact with diff people is admirable.
