Inside Hiroshima | Japan's Most Infamous City (NOT what we expected!)

Check out our full Japan Tour itinerary here: www.bit.ly/3jrYn0E
This is Hiroshima. We have always wanted to travel here and visit the city where the first atomic bomb was dropped. In all honesty, before arriving we didn't know what to expect and how we would feel in the place that has felt and witnessed so much heartache. Hiroshima is Japan's most infamous city. This is all because at 08:15 am on the 16th August 1949, Hiroshima became the first place on Earth to feel the devastating effects of an atomic bomb. It’s a day that changed the entire World forever. The atomic bomb decimated the city, killing nearly all nearby the blast and injuring tens of thousands more.
However, Hiroshima and its population have completely rebounded since then, and has the city changed since those dark days. People now travel here & to the surrounding areas from all over Japan and the wider world. This is why...

The Allies literally reached the gates of Berlin 5 months prior. The war in Europe had finished in May. Pressure was growing on Japan to surrender after the Potsdam Declaration that summer. I think it’s pretty fair to say the war was coming towards its end.

As a part of a group of young student-teachers in 1984 we all folded paper cranes on the bus trip from Kobe to Hiroshima to present at Peace Park. It was a moving day in Hiroshima learning about a past never to be repeated (so say we all). Like the two of you our spirits were buoyed by the liveliness and energy of the city of Hiroshima and its people. Bless them all (and the best okonomiyaki in Japan).

It has emerged to a city with so much history steeped in many traditions. The food was all so good. Harriet and I had a great time there. So glad Julia you are feeling better. I am a big fan of raw oysters. Hiroshima is right up there with some of the best fresh oysters harvested in the world. Thank you so much for the great memories, Harriet and i have of Hiroshima. Love you Dearly ❤❤❤ Harriet, Jim and Yuki Richmond, Va.

Smiling: the oysters at Brighton Beach just might have come from France; but by the time they got served to you they weren't so fresh! The contrasts in Japan are amazing (saw it on my one trip to Japan about 25 years ago) with the beautiful gardens, old temples (so calm and well: zen) and the what I'd call tacky shops and boring looking fast food places. (Some of the food did look outright dangerously delicious). And lots of electrical wires in your city shots, too. Japan is not on my list to revisit, but, as always, you two capture the down-to-earth tourist experience and not the glitzy, slick, hyped travel clips shown on TV (especially) of countries around the world. Appreciate the good and the bad of a travel experience which you show. And you do it in spades. Merci, thanks.

I am bedazzled by the delicious oysters and street-style cabbage food. I love seafood and I love Japanese food but never before this video did I have any idea what could be enjoyed on an average Hiroshima day. Short of visiting there myself (I can only wish), I am now going to make it my mission to research whether I can find anything remotely like this in the USA. Oysters, definitely yes, and even in my town of Tucson (shock of shocks) but that fabulous shrimp and/or bacon cabbage dish has me longing to be eating it. I am so pleased that you did and that you are sharing it with us!

Hello Matt and Julia, may I also suggest that you visit Himeji Castle in Hyogo Prefecture, Himeji City is the finest example of an original Japanese castle in existence. It is called Shirasagi Jo or White Heron Castle as it looks from the distance like a white heron about to take flight. Also in the general area is the island of Omishima where Oyamazumi Jinja is.. It houses the finest collection of Japanese armour in the world. All National Treasures. Often after battles samurai would dedicate a suit of their finest armour to the shrine (jinja means Shinto shrine). This area of the inland seas was a high traffic area and also the home of famous pirate families. So there are 1000 year old armour in original condition and some examples even of women's armour. Please enjoy your trip in Japan.

Добрый вечер, Мэтт и Юлия! Добро пожаловать в Хиросиму😊 I‘m quite baffled to see you guys walking around in my immediate neighborhood😱 I‘ve been a silent subscriber of your channel for quite a while now (mostly for the content in Russia and the former Soviet Countries). And now, on my way home (riding the street car „Miyajimaguchi line“) I see you guys visiting Hiroshima and Miyajima feels kinda surreal😅 I could have bumped into you, which would have been pretty amazing tbh! Btw, I am a German living in Hiroshima (just right in front of Miyajima) for 8 years now. And Matt you were absolutely right about the oysters being freshly caught. On your way to Miyajima Island, did you recognize some wooden planks offshore? Underneath those wooden rafts are hundreds of oysters cultivated and waiting to be harvested. Fun fact: Hiroshima accounts for approx. 70% of Japan's oyster production. It‘s a shame that you weren’t able to make a longer video, because besides cuisine Hiroshima has a lot more to offer. But the weather seemed to be shite and Julia was feeling under the weather, as well. I‘m glad she got better during the time filming. I hope you can visit Hiroshima again, on a nice fine weather day and enjoy the beautiful mountains and the Seto Inland Sea once more. Enjoy the rest of your stay in Japan! I‘m looking forward to the next video. Пока пока 👋🏻

Добрый вечер, спасибо большое 🤗😘 Thank you so much for leaving such an amazing message, really appreciate it! We were actually in Japan in February, usually we post our videos few weeks after we film them. So we have the time to edit everything properly, plan and work in between 😊 We absolutely loved the country and would definitely love to come back! Shame we didn’t bump into you by accident! But hopefully next time we can bump into each other on purpose 😄 We would have loved to film more in Hiroshima, but as you said we were so unlucky with the weather and there is only so much we can do filming wise whilst being on a tour and yeah, I managed to get sick, never a convenient time for that 😅. We absolutely loved the oysters! I keep dreaming about them 😄 Thank you so much, lovely to meet you 😘❤️ can’t wait to share everything!

Especially during corona. I wasn‘t traveling for 3 years, so it was very entertaining to see you traveling across Russia etc. And btw Matt’s Russian is so impressive! Did he picked up the most chunk from you? I think I’ll never be able to speak proper Russian, only building sentences at Duolingo😅 Yes, it makes totally sense that you Film in advance and then editing it at a later point😂 Just seeing the video today while being next to Miyajima Island felt like a near miss😉 Anyways, if we could bump into each other on purpose some day, I’d be over the 🌙 You’re always welcome in Hiroshima❣️ I‘m quite excited about what your next location might be^^ Stay safe and healthy! Isn't it a shame that a country so sophisticated and cultured and who strive for perfection in many of the things they do, should emerge into a modern mechanised world with a medieval mind set and bring so much wrath and destruction upon themselves. It's a testament to the character of the Japanese people that they have literally risen from the ashes and brough peace and prosperity back for the benefit of generations that followed.

I agree that the damage done to those two cities was unbelievable, but not unwarranted! Everyone does not like to recall what the japanese government and military did to others, mainland china, numerous pacific rim islands, the Phillipines, and lets not forget Pearl Harbor. I know I will probably receive negative comments, but most people forget that there are two sides to every story. Also, for many years the truth about the war was not allowed to be taught in schools. Enough said. I do agree that the chance you are giving us to follow you on this tour is excellent. The country-side, the cities, the people. Especially the food. 🦀🥡🦞 Matt, do not complain that Julia has very good taste for good food. It is also reflected in her taste of a Mate! Enjoy your journey... we enjoy following along. Safe travels, with love from Ann Arbor, Chris.

Underlying everything was that FDR wanted war with Japan. We had cut off Japan's oil supply, which was no small thing. Japan was an evil country at that time. Her actions cannot be excused. However, in 1944, IMO, the US started to go off track and is now the world's #1 rogue nation. We have become what older generations fought against.

I can hear by the accents that you are travelling with some Australians. Can pick a bogan anywhere. Seriously though, my daughter read the book about Sadako and the cranes when she was in year 3 at school and then set about to fold abour 100 cranes in honour. We still have them now even though she is now 16. From a fellow Australian.

That was interesting. I have always wondered how they rebuilt the city so fast - what happened to all the radiation? Thought it would be like Chernobyl where ground is still contaminated. I thought radiation lasted for like hundreds of years. Would like to know more about that.

There is also an Osaka version of okonomiyaki, where all the ingredients are mixed instead, and there isn't typically noodles. Have you guys tried? I think I prefer that version! We had it with cheese and mochi in Osaka, and it was incredible! 😍

No disrespect, but I really hate that version, perhaps because my first wife used to make it at home that way. This was especially surprising because her parents have the best ‘Hiroshima style’ okonomiyaki restaurant in Iwakuni, Yamaguchi.

@@longago-igo To be fair, I haven't had Hiroshima style IN Hiroshima it's self. It was in a different city- so I may change my tune when I try it in it's place of origin!

Thank you for sharing Matt and Julia. The questions come up as we look at all this. What were they bombing all this Roman/Moorish architecture with same kind of bridges and river banks canals, electric transportations in Japan ? So they could stir the narrative where they did..... Why did Japan had all this same architecture all around the world as unification and not what the narrative said ? More questions come up as the same in Dresden 🙏

Hi Julia, hi Matt. Of course everybody knows about Hiroshima and Nagasaki and no one, no country should use it as an argument saying because they(americans) did and so we are allowed to do so as well. Such argumentation drives me crazy. The japanes pizza looked so yummy and seafoot is always good and tasty. Qysters are much more for Matt but take care mate.

This was absolutely horrific because it was intentionally dropped on civilians. There’s absolutely no reason to still use nukes even in case of military conflict. Regular missiles can strike with high precision only military installations and never again kids.

As a Japanese national, the title of this upload is very offensive. There is absolutely nothing "infamous" about Hiroshima. That is a grave insult to Hiroshima. That is because you foreigners dropped a bomb and destroyed the city and killed mercilessly thousands of people, again there is nothing "infamous" about the city. I demand that you apologize to the city and change the title.

Admirals Nimitz, King, Halsey and Leahy opposed the dropping of the atomic bomb, along with generals Macarthur, Arnold and Eisenhower. We were reading the Japanese diplomatic code and knew the emperor wanted to end the war. The hang up was the survival of the emperor, which we agreed to anyway. The bombs were dropped as a warning to Joseph Stalin, that we were capable of anything. In fact, Churchill had proposed an atomic attack on the USSR, killing most of the population. This was Operation Unthinkable, aptly named. What saved the Soviets was their development of the bomb, with the aid of courageous Americans, Britains, and Canadians. To those people, we owe a debt of gratitude. As for Truman, he was a war criminal. Any decent society would have locked him up. However, at least he didn't nuke China in 1950, at the start of the Korean War.

The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki aren't exactly suitable for a YT comment, but some things should be said. Tokyo was fire-bombed, as were cities like Hamburg. The people who died in those cities didn't give thanks because they didn't die of a nuclear blast. The fighting during the invasion of the Okinawan islands was horrendous - an invasion of the Japanese mainland would have been far worse - on another scale. The dropping of those two bombs, and the terrible damage they did, was what ended the war, and saved millions of lives on both sides. A responsible person accepts the decision that causes less harm in the end. And in fact, the cities were built back quickly - while the world was talking about the horrors of nuclear weapons, people in both cities were going to work and shopping like nothing had happened - just like in other cities after the war. Hard facts, but true.
