Inside Guantanamo Bay's Kitchen: The Politics of Food

You’ve probably read, watched, or heard something controversial about the Guantanamo Bay detention camp since it started housing suspected terrorists in 2002. This past year, most media has centered around hunger strikes-which is one of the most well-known ways that prisoners protest their indefinite detainment-and the subsequent force-feeding they endure. Last year, there were over 100 detainees on hunger strike. But what about the detainees that are eating?
Fortunately for them, there's Sam, the cheery middle-aged Korean chef that takes pride in each meal she whips up. Sam makes chicken eight different ways, prepares both Halal and Kosher meals, and bakes an impressive assortment of cookies. And every ingredient used in her kitchen comes from … you guessed it … America.
Our host Gianna Toboni spent a few days last March on a riveting tour of Gitmo, from the cellblock to the prison library to the local mini golf course and the fascinating commissary. We don't know what was more surprising-the huge python that we encountered, or the interesting politics of the camp's kitchen.

Korean mommies, and grandmas are so sweet. I live in a military town with a lot of Koreans. I started buying kimchi, and a few other Korean foods that I developed a taste for at a local market. The ladies that work there are so awesome, and they have gotten to know me, and my habits. When I come in they already know what I want, and they start packaging my groceries, and always have some fresh Korean pancakes as well as a big smile, and hug for me.

I'm not really sure what you're asking, but I think you're asking me if I go into the store to hit on them. No. Not only am I happily married man, but so are the women that work there, and they are all quite a bit older than me. I go in the store to buy traditional Korean foods that I enjoy eating, and cannot purchase at large chain grocery stores.

To be real right now; even though the person who runs the food is delightful it feels patronizing to say she has a 'blissful ignorance.' Just because she has an accent and enjoys her job. That doesn't mean you would have the right to patronize her intelligence. She most likely knows better than anyone the hunger strikes, dosent mean she's 'ignorant' just because she's displaying to you how shes meant to do her job. Not everyone has the advantage of a politically 'woke' job. Sometimes you take what you can get and do your best, and you don't have the right to take an elitist position of basically calling her a delightful moron in your doco.

***** Please read again my comment. My main thought was that food was shown as example/evidence of how good prisoners are threated, but simultaneously omitted more important aspects of their existence such as "tortures, humiliation, many years imprison without the trial and other human right stuff". It is like if someone was raping you but whispering during penetration "i love you" - it is simple irrelevant in that situation, don't you think?

Is it just me, or is she really condescending about the Korean woman. She lives in "blissful ignorance"; "she's so cute!" What a cute, little, ignorant foreigner! Is it racism, or just plain condescension? I could have gone with "cute", but not after the "ignorant" comment. Why is she ignorant? Because she's happy? Is she supposed to morose all the time because she works in a prison camp? I guess as a hard hitting human rights/cafeteria reporter, it's hard for her to be around people who lack her heightened sense of professional empathy. Oh, if only we could all care as properly as she does! And what about how hilarious she thought the snake incident was? Was that a momentary lapse into "ignorance"?

Plus it all comes down how the world sees terrorism, in my eyes the american army are also committing acts of terrorism when invading third world countries, but if them countries started capturing american soldiers and tortured them how would the world see it? Fact is this is the closest thing to a modern concentration camp

People who were in Afghanistan, Pakistan and other places who were going about their daily lives were plucked and sent to Gitmo Bay... Research Shaker Amir, Moazzem Begg and countless others ... Very few were 'full-out' terrorists... These people were kept locked up without reason and proven guilty then later innocent... (Yup the opposite ... ) Gitmo Bay was used to 'frighten' Americans into continuous support for such an illegal 'War on Terror'... No doubt, some prisoners were terrorists , but majority were innocent or 'low profile criminals'

I've unfortunately had the experience of having briefly been held in what would be considered a "nicer" jail here in the US, and the the food is unrecognizable slop in microscopic portions. I also know people who have served tours at GTMO, and it's not just the food that is a higher standard than our domestic jails and prisons, the medical care, cells, nearly everything is held to a higher standard, all because of the PR and optics. How come you never see anyone getting nearly as upset about how we treat our own citizens as they do these detainees? Somethings to think about.

Explain the torture and 24 deaths in GITMO? Don’t downplay the horrors of GITMO by comparing it to your prisons in your own country, at least the people imprisoned in your country have gone through a trial and have been convicted u like the GITMO detainees who’ve never had a trial and are wrongly imprisoned for years then released after going through torture.

US Jail: legal Gitmo: illegal I’m pragmatic enough to understand why Gitmo exists. I don’t have a strong opinion. Call it a necessary evil. The additional quality is likely a pseudo CYA illogical move. Jails in the US depend on Federal, State or private. Likely, the quality goes in that order.

Well fed prisons have better food too. This is military so they kinda have higher expectations like in the Geneva convention. Talk about being so fake. They went overboard in their staging that it is clear this is not true.. Really, they have three choices in each course of 3 meals a day. It doesn't matter what country you come from, stir fried vegetables and boiled rice with no flavouring is acceptable to everyone, give or take some meat.

What most of you guys don't understand is a well kept enemy is much more likely to spill the beans than a tortured enemy history has proven this and most fuckwitts here think that this is a waist, but it is a highly efficient method of getting information.

JFK Jose I believe you are referring to the interrogation method used in WW2 by the nazis? They create a sort of pseudo-enforced Stockholm syndrome which makes the subject spill a lot of information over time. Too bad it sounds too contradictory to the common man to be researched more thoroughly.

Then what happens if they literally serve to not having any useless information to you, meanwhile they just plowed a car through a sidewalk killing men, women and children? Not everybody there knows of some secret information that we are trying to obtain. Yet they get treated like kings. The problem is people want to be the kindest to these sick human beings, while in our own prisons, people get treated like shit. And how does being spoiled make you want to spell the beans? If I'm getting a fancy meal and everything, I'm not going to tell you want I know. If I'm about to get brutally tortured and I can prevent it by telling them what I know, I would be more likely to tell them, then live to suffer. So I am having a hard to believing you. Can you please point out sources that point to that?

'how we treat our pows is an important thing' No it isn't and they are not pows, they are captured insurgents, which are explicitly excluded from the geneva convention. They do not have any rights under the law and in fact, can be legally executed on the spot when captured. 'innocent to proven guilty. Holding them without trial yet you moan about NK doing it.' What fantasy land do you live in exactly? They weren't pulled off the street at random, they were captured shooting at soldiers or otherwise attempting to kill them. They are not innocent of anything, and legally have no right to a trial, see the geneva convention on what happens to people captured armed and not wearing recognized military uniform (hint: they have no legal rights whatsoever, they are subject to summary execution) they should be grateful that they weren't simply shot on the spot
