Inside Donald Trump's 18 recorded interviews with Bob Woodward for his book "Rage"

In taped conversations with a Washington Post journalist, President Trump said he wanted to downplay the severity of the coronavirus. And the recordings reveal the President’s view on how close the United States came to nuclear war with North Korea. Scott Pelley reports.

60 Minutes, the most successful American television broadcast in history, began its 52nd season in September. Offering hard-hitting investigative reports, interviews, feature segments and profiles of people in the news, the broadcast began in 1968 is still a hit in 2020. 60 Minutes makes Nielsen’s weekly Top 10 nearly every week and was the #1 weekly television broadcast three times last season.
The program still averages more than 10 million viewers, more than double the audience of its nearest network news magazine competitor. The average audience for a 60 Minutes broadcast is 150% higher than those of the network morning news programs; the audience dwarfs the number of viewers drawn by the most popular cable news programs.
About a million more people listen to the 60 Minutes radio simulcast in several major cities and on its companion podcast. Tens of thousands each week experience 60 Minutes online. The broadcast’s segments can be watched at 60Minutes.com and on the CBS All Access app. Its webcast, 60MinutesOvertime.com, offers content originally produced for the web, including behind-the-scenes video about the production of 60 Minutes stories and timely archival segments.
60 Minutes has won every major broadcast award. Its 25 Peabody and 150 Emmy awards are the most won by any single news program. It has also won 20 duPont-Columbia University journalism awards. Other distinguished journalism honors won multiple times include the George Polk, RTDNA Edward R. Murrow, Investigative Reporters and Editors, RFK Journalism, Sigma Delta Chi and Gerald Loeb awards.
60 Minutes premiered on CBS September 24, 1968. Bill Owens is the program’s executive producer. The correspondents and contributors of 60 Minutes are Sharyn Alfonsi, Anderson Cooper, John Dickerson, Norah O’Donnell, Scott Pelley, Lesley Stahl, Bill Whitaker and L. Jon Wertheim.

And why should it be? He’s got nothing to gain when he thinks about the American people. One day we’ll realize that we got capitalism wrong so that a very small portion of the population that is not at all representational of the population, has a huge control on the policy that affects all Americans.

@@yodead369 Are Trump supporters protesting at the rallies? Are they unsatisfied with the pres? Are they unsatisfied with their current lives? They are not. That is the difference. Trump supporters who go to his rallies believe COVID is a hoax, that it won't happen to them. Protestors are fully aware of COVID, nearly all wear masks, and nearly all are protesting for a "redress of grievances", not to spite public health and chant in support of a single man, their dear, dear leader. In other words, protestors have a right and responsibility to protest their government, by the most fundamental pillar of the constitution. Trump supporters often participate in unlawful assembly (depending on the state) with no grievances against the government, and have no constitutional right or responsibility to assemble.

I swipe left on my phone everyday and it's nothing but the same old predictable anti-Trump headlines. People that follow politics and the media headlines may not like Trump but if you follow policies and go deeper instead, he wins a lot of folks on that. Plus I don't how old you are but almost all of the more known folks in political TV media have been discredited based on their previous lies - so not too many watch and believe this stuff. Even when they report a fact, they don't report all of them on purpose - to paint a specific picture.

But come on, do Trump's policies matter more than when he said he played down the virus threat and the effect this policy has had on the US, clears peaceful protestors with force to stand in front of a church with a bible, to call military people losers and suckers, to mock a disabled man (I really could go on and on) . With the exception of the losers and suckers statement, all the other things mentioned I have seen and heard with my own ears and eyes. How is it, that a considered person such as yourself, ignore these obviously flawed traits in Trump. Trump is the president of the self-absorbed and globally clueless. What is laughable is Trump as done more damage to the anti-communist agenda that any president in the history of the United States. But this is no surprise. And, how can anyone who is going to make America great deny the value of the human sacrifices of soldiers calling them losers and suckers? It is time to face it that Trump voters made huge miscalculations in who can be a president.

Anyone with eyes and a brain should have been able to tell how this was going to turn out before the US even had a known case. I told my wife in December that this virus was different and needed to be taken serious. China doesn't just shut down huge parts of its country for nothing. Especially when shutting down those places means economic disaster and China's main way of influencing the world is through economics. There is no way they would have chose to weaken themselves unless this was serious. Also the rate of spread was so high it was obvious it would make it here and be disastrous. I really don't understand how this virus caught so many off guard with all the information we had even before January.

Daniel Roig the numbers don’t add up. By your logic New Zealand would be bankrupt with increased deaths now because they followed the science but they have reduced their exposure to a practical zero and are not bankrupt. South Korea is another example. Their economy is fine AND they have incredibly lower per capita death from the virus. The U.S. is 4% of the world’s population yet we have 25% of the deaths. Let that sink in. Your claim that Trump protected the economy and reduced deaths is laughable. Which G8 country has had more deaths and economic collapse because they followed the science? The economies of all the E.U. nations are doing fine, yet they all have less death per capita than the U.S. except the U.K. which is right there with us and also ignoring the science. What metric would you like to use to support your claim? Some anecdotal stories don’t add up to 200,000 and counting.

Daniel Roig what is wrong with people that resort to ‘you can always move to another country’ when they feel they are defending the indefensible. That is just stupid. I was born here, I served in the military here. I worked and retired here. I think I will just stay here, if it is alright with you. South Korea has 1/6 our population and 377 deaths. 377x6=2262. Why do we have 100 times that amount? Because South Korea developed a testing and tracing program in the beginning. Our President lied to us for months and only when he was falling behind in the polls did he start to emphasize testing a little bit. How do we know he lied? He is ON TAPE. His own words. And yet, he still tweets out that it is fake news. Unbelievable that folks believe anything out of his mouth at this point. Daniel Roig I think it was ridiculous when folks said they would leave the country if Obama won and it is equally ridiculous when they said it about Trump. I voted for Ronald Reagan 4 times (Governor and President) and when Trump was elected I admit I wasn’t happy. As a veteran I make it a point to never vote for a draft dodger, but that is just my thing. Even so, I said then that our system of government is greater than any one man. I held hope that the office would help Trump to become a leader. As time went by I slowly lost hope. It began when many people reported him saying the White House was a dump. I have come to believe he is a narcissist incapable of empathy or acting outside his own interests. When he ordered a military attack from his dinner table without proper military guidance and lives were lost I became dismayed and sad. When he pulled out of Syria without proper preparations resulting in the deaths of many of our allies in the region and we had to bomb our own base to keep equipment from falling into Russian hands I became angry. His taunting of Gold and Blue Star families is reprehensible. His lies about large pay raises for the military and improved health care options are just more reasons I don’t like him. My 401k did very well under Obama and it continued under Trump, but people not fortunate enough to have excess income to put into the stock market are not doing that well under Trump. More people are working, largely due to cuts in unemployment benefits, but at lower paying jobs and temporary jobs without health and other benefits. The factory I retired from doubled the number of temporary employees (by reducing the permanent staff) in the last couple years before COVID. Low unemployment does not tell the whole story, and I read recently that due to calculation errors the number wasn’t even as low as had been reported.

I explained why I think he lies to Americans, which shouldn’t be under debate. Trump admits in his very own words that he “downplayed” the virus knowing how dangerous it was. Maybe you can accept his excuse of why he did it, and it doesn’t bother you, but it bothers me and many others. This has nothing to do with radicalization. I expect to be treated like an intelligent adult. I don’t want people in power making decisions for me. I just want the facts spoken in calm and confident way. In mid-late February, I was working in a cafeteria inside a large university. Although I still have not been tested, I very likely had the virus at this time. It was deep cough, sneezing, and general weakness for about 2 weeks. We were short staffed because people were getting sick, and I was working from about 5AM to 3PM. At first it seemed like just a standard cough, so I tried to be extra careful to cover coughs in the back and do extra hand washing. I felt like I had to keep working otherwise we wouldn't have the staff to keep going. There wasn't much knowledge out on the virus that I had heard, and we had an FAQ sheet posted in the back for people asking questions like "are we required to wear masks? Which said no, they aren't necessary." About a day after I had symptoms, I heard Trump say (paraphrasing) 'This is going to be over really soon, people shouldn't worry, it's gonna be a miracle.' Of course it's hard to believe anything he says, but you assume he's got the top US scientists and health experts at his disposal. He must have at least some good information even though this is a new thing for everyone. So I continue to work for about 4 days, until more information comes out from the CDC and other sources, and I realize what a stupid mistake I've made. About the same time, co-workers, and my boss were also realizing the seriousness of the situation. I told my boss I can't come in, and about a week later, we had to close down. It is for sure partly my fault, but if I were given the correct information, I would have for sure immediately called in. I may have infected many people when we were serving food to hundreds of people a shift.
