Adam, you may be interested to know the Huot Dispensers you own were the end result of another OCD person...My Grandpa, Gene Huot was a tool & die maker and before he invented the drill index, most folks kept their bits in a cigar box. When he needed a bit he had to hunt through that box which bugged him to no end... One day in a moment of brilliance the drill index was invented and 90 years later we're still making them right here in the USA. Love your show and keep up the great work, John Huot

How does this comment not have any upvotes in 10 years??!! So great to hear about the history behind the Huot dispensers, John. Thank you for posting.
Every time Adam or Will picked up and shook one of those boxes my heart skipped a beat.
That bolt box!!! My grandad had a large bucket we called the bolt bucket, after he passed I inherited it and it is something I treasure and use weekly. He would be impressed at your bolt box.
I love how I have to re-watch parts of the video because I have to check out the cool stuff in the background. (Mark 1 Iron man on the floor, completed C3-PO in the background wearing the Indiana Jones fedora, stormtrooper helmet on the shelf in the back. ZF-1 WIP on the table.)
Your organization systems make me so happy. Its like looking at those photos of a large amount of small items sorted by color. I feel relaxed and inspired. I feel like I want to organize my life.
always been a fan and cannot believe that I only just found this channel!!
The more information I learn about the characteristics of Adam Savage, the more I learn about myself because I feel that I am awfully similar to Adam Savage. Oh and by the way, to Mr. Savage, what a phenomenal setup you have for building (nearly) anything. I take this information as learning advice... learning from another individuals' past mistakes into knowing what works and is trouble free for a workshop to function more easily. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for letting us in to the cave !
my grandpa was also a tool and die maker and when i went through his old tool cart from work all of his bits were in old cigar boxes. I just thought it was interesting to see a case simmilar to mine. Thank you for sharring

Model Number of the sortimo rack and boxes used?
I love looking back at how Adam's shop looked before he filled it with all of his stuff...
Beautiful system and stocked full of awesome stuff
Definitely a serious tool organization for screws, bits, nuts, bolts and the like. Thanks for sharing. :-)
I loved seeing him open the case with the bearings and seeing the exact bearings i use in all my skateboards.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who went shopping for these after seeing Adam's video. It looks like his setup was a van rack that had a mobile base added. I finally got pricing on a similar setup - Sortimo has just started offering rolling racks of their own, the T-Boxx Tower. A 2x12 tower with 24 boxes is a little over $3k. Like Adam said, it's an investment.

I've been using a lot of the smaller Bosch/Sortimo i-Boxx53 trays so I built a couple of 5-tray racks for them out of 3/4" square steel tubing and 1/4" square steel bar for the rails. Each rack cost me about $10 for materials and assembly was pretty easy, even for a novice at MIG welding. I can write up some notes on the build if anyone's interested, but here's the end result: imgur.com/a/muJG8

Sortimo's system costs 5-20 times that of their competitors, but only offers marginally better performance. There are times when it's worth it to spring for the high dollar stuff, spending $80 (ea) on plastic sorting trays isn't one of those times.

For anyone wanting to build a stock of nuts and bolts, for larger sizes (1/4" and up) go to a Tractor Supply or Farm Supply place - they sell standard sized nuts, bolts, washers etc by the pound. far far cheaper than any other way of buying them.
@TheReconPrepper

1 lb bulk of one type. Home Depot does the same with 1lb boxes, but only sells fasteners for woodworking and remodeling. If you wanted an assortment for machine work Ace Hardware lets you pay per piece, but its going to be no where as economical as bulk from the Tractor Supply.
I come back to these every once in a while just to smile

+Mandalore06 Indeed, like the uni-bit they use so much, it's a little tool that saves so much time and frustration and many people who could benefit from it don't even know it exists.
I share it Adams excitement about storage. I don't share the same budget unfortunately. For anyone interested, Harbor Freight sells a similar product (of much more inferior quality I'm sure) for a tenth of the price. Thanks for showing us Adam!! And thanks for all of the awesome videos!
i love when adam gets excited
Watching that Sortimo box in action feels strangely satisfying ...
Love how when Will pulled out the drawer to show how it stayed closed he still made sure to put his finger on the lid "just in case".

This video should also be in the Shop Organization playlist.
this video actually got me curious about this system, got my first sortimo t-boxx in the mall today and found it awesome, so i just ordered 4 more of these to sort my stuff
love the set up
my gods, I LOVE those sortimo drawers. I'd already pulled up amazon to go find some before the video got halfway through. X3 As a crafter myself those will be incredibly handy.
It started with cable management, and evolved ( for me, devolved?) into compartmentalization, and now I work more at organizing than I do at working. Sir Savage, I aspire to create again, anew! Thank you for this inspiration. Yup. Again, to create...
This should be a TV show.
WOW........Adam takes OCD sorting to a whole new level.... Seriously impressed here..... That sortimo cabinet was amazing

Walking in Home Depot I passed the screw wall and they had a clearance sale with every box on sale for $1. Oh man I bought a lotta screws!!
Adam, you live my dream! I love you workshop I love your work and everything... Man you are amazing
That.. is... BEAUTIFUL
Adam, I love you sortimo and of course I had to have one or my version of one so I followed the youtubes sortimo for cheap skates by re-purposing an old cheap steel shelving unit with extra part into my base-line "El-cheap skatemo-sortimo" by adding extra shelf's 4" apart I can put two trays on each still have extra parts. Mine has 10 trays with room for 12 trays and is without wheels most people have built and used small cheap casters I didn't and here is why. I have a heavy rolling aircraft tool chest, with an 18"x 27" roll-away it spent the bulk of its working life at Northrup aircraft. It sits on a base of 1" plywood, about 4" bigger then the foot print of the tool box with 4 large industrial casters. This was done because the facility was on various levels and used ramp of various grades to give access the facility. Sometimes when we rolled a tool box down a ramp, they can tip over because they can be top heavy. this can damage a chest and block a ramp The wheels sit outboard of the chest's foot print giving it a larger foot print and reducing the risk of a tip-over. Consider that the foot print of a single standard Harbor Freight parts tray is about 50% of the size of my rolling tool chest so it is most likely to be 200% more likely to tip-over. So increase the foot print of the casters by moving them 3-4 Inches outside the foot print. Plus the bigger casters roll over small nuts and bolt better than the little hard plastic ones. Also don't under estimate the weight of your Nuts and Bolts, once I filled even part way fill my trays they weight 10-15 Lbs. each on average and it adds up quick I have 10 trays right now and the 100-150 Lbs. total. So when I add another 2 trays that will make my total weight 120-160 Lbs. I wanted to get this out because the plastic trays will not do well in a tip-over.
Thanks! Excellent Vid.
Oh my God how I appreciate and admire Adam! I am exactly like him in terms of how he thinks. Only difference between me and him is I'm broke and not famous. In my shop I do the same shit just on a smaller level. The way he thinks it's just so brilliant and that's exactly the way I think. I think Adam is my favorite person on Earth.
wish i had all those items and that shelf in my work area just imagine what you could create with all that.
Had exactly the same frustration of lifting the box over to the workspace and back each time, ultimately for a much smaller shop with less of a range I found the solution was to switch to a smaller size of case, making them much lighter and more manageable.
Wow, I need that sorting system desperately
now that's cool love the boxes
3:07 IF I need a screw, I know who to call. MYTH BUSTERS!
Wow, that's amazing. I don't need one of those, but I most certainly want one.
These are as cool as it gets. There are other brands that have the formed top to parts don't shift. These are the nicest I've seen
hardware store at home! really needed today when sheltering-in-place
I love learning shit, and Adam has been teaching me random shit since I was a little kid.
LOVE Is not the right word to tell how i LOVE This stuff. My Dream Boxes, Damn, my Workspace is a mess, but deep inside im a very organized guy so damn, im looking forward for stuff like this,
Good God...this sort of shop would be heaven for me.
I love the pile of mark one on the floor
So jealous. My mouth dropped wide open and I gasped with wonder.
One of my life goals is to have a shop like that.
This is the best TV-shop ever ;)

all those drill bits!! a jeweler's dream come true, well at least mine.^^
would love these!!
I definitely want a case/shelf/rack like that sortimo!
I wish i had that workshop!
Hey Adam, have you found sharpening drill bits less cost-efficient compared to tossing them and going with new? I think I hold on to my old ones even though they are dull but can't find reasonably priced bulk bit sellers.
that is just amazing
I am really interested in these so I looked them up and there are so many different styles with each one having a different part/ product number. Please let me know which these are so I can get them coming!?!?!?! These are exactly what I’ve been looking for.
i really like the storage shelf
Awesome video, did you build or purchase the Sortimo rack? I was hoping to find something similar to Festool's SYS-PORT-1000 for the Sortimo T-BOXXes.
I love that apron
Love them too!
Beautiful
I love Sortimo. They made the organisation system in the cars at my work.
i am the same way. I am naturally messy, but I feel satisfied when "it's" clean.
I love the storage system described in the video, but the trays are pretty expensive. I found a solution I could afford. A large hardware store (guess which one) has similar trays priced at about $11 for two. Although the individual compartments don't come out, they can have some of the dividers removed to create larger spots, and I found small (almost tiny) food containers that fit well inside the smallest compartments, so it's a poor-man's version. I built a rolling rack for them. I used dowels to create shelves of a sort for the storage trays, plywood for the top and bottom, and MDF for the back and sides. . Rather than cut the bottom, top and back panels to about 16" wide (the width of the trays plus the thickness of the side panels) I left them 24" wide and offset the rack to one side. That gave me extra space on the top of the unit and a sizable about of space off to one side. I attached an old wire shelf vertically to the empty space, held in place with video cable clips that work perfectly as hinges. I can store lightweight tools on the vertical shelf, and it swings out so I can store tall, thin items behind it. . I did make a couple of mistakes on this. The silliest one is that I painted it after it was all built. That means that in order to paint the back wall inside, I had to reach my hand back there and I got white latex paint all over my arm. Also, I didn't realize until afterwards, but water-based paints will cause MDF to swell just a little. Ordinarily it wouldn't be a problem, but these storage trays come with clips to serve as a second backup locking mechanism for the lids, and these clips also allow you to lock stacked trays together. Before painting, the trays fit in there perfectly, but with the MDF swelling (not enough to even see), the inside was now too narrow to fit the trays with clips attached. I removed the clips and it all worked. The best part of the whole project: I still have all twelve fingers. Here are a couple of photos on Facebook. So Adam, if you're still getting comments after six years, thanks for the inspiration! . scontent-lax3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/43828945_10155869028018161_7451473795602186240_o.jpg?_nc_cat=101&_nc_ht=scontent-lax3-1.xx&oh=fdb68630f0870060ce46c4382ee5d054&oe=5C3C5AD4

Without this knowledge I could not move forward in my life.
bearing and bushings. you'll really love this one. LOL such a nerd
i love these videos
sortimo is awesome, after seeing this video i bought myself one of those cases. My first tool box i might add :)
My first thought was "baker's rack!" We used them all the time when I was making picture frames and architectural moulding.
Saw the video, loved it. Saw the pricing on Sortimo.... yeah, nup. I'll sort out something else me thinks!
Wow...The Cave looked so...empty 7 years ago. Much prefer it now! Also...I’ve been watching Tested for 7 years! Keep it up!
Best web show on the intertubes !
I understand that this guy is probably somewhat star-struck, but I think he is just a little bit too enthusiastic about how Adam stores his nuts.
This is why we need peace on Earth. So people can be like Adam. People should all live like the characters of the Big Bang Theory, just enjoying comics and good movies and doing science.
Spinning carousel storage bins are also really good. I think its Racco that make them.
"i have beendriving jamie nuts with that" "he surely nees it" what a nice guy....XD
I think that, if we can only send one man back in time it has to be Adam
I love these. :)
All I can think of is the line from the first Fast & Furious.... “if you can’t find the right tool in this garage, you don’t belong near cars” ... love the cave. 👍🏼😈👍🏼
