So many years - so little progress, this is a feature that MS should have embedded within the application over a decade ago. Not taking anything away from the content of this video (it's useful) but quite why in 2024 this most requested excel feature still relies on an add-in is beyond me!

It's MS, they rarely do anything right. There are bugs in Excel that have been there for many years and known about, yet never fixed. There are missing features or even good features removed. They really don't care.

Agreed. It used to be available in win32 versions pre Office2013. Some of the tools, like the table calendar filter, use the feature to select dates for the datesBetween in the Custom AutoFilter dialogue.

Hello Thank you very much! Do you maybe know how to set up this add for it to follow the spreadsheet when we scroll down or up? When I use it it stay at the same place on the sheet so it's not ideal when you have a huge vertical sheet. Thanks for your help!!

I don't know of any way to achieve this as the picker element is basically being treated by Excel in the same way as a chart. It is simply "pasted" on top of your sheet.

I was looking how to create a selectable cell with a date in excel but this does the work

Good !! but I can not have the user bringing up the developer tab every time they need to add a date, there has to be a way to bring the calendar up when typing into a cell.

I wish there was, but after much searching, I haven't been able to find a way. If you are able to find one, I'd love to know it. I also haven't been able to find a way to trigger the add-in with a keyboard shortcut (and I looked for a while).

@@paulomalley I added the calendar via the activex, MS date and time picker control 6.0, then control it using vba selection change. Just selecting the cell inside the target, brings up the calendar, anywhere else it hides.

Wow! That is definitely one way to do it, but I think the MS date and time picker control 6.0 only works with 32-bit Office installations. With the default installation moving to 64-bit now, I don't know how useful that is going to be long term. But it is at least a way around it currently if you use 32-bit Office installations.

My understanding is that you don't actually need to download that. It is merely a process to enable it. Please note that this module only works with 32bit Office installations. The default is now 64bit and if yours is, this won't work for you. Ahh, unfortunately, I don't have any real hands on experience in Userform in VBA, so I likely can't assist if the instructions in the link I shared before don't make the control appear for you. Hopefully someone else here in the comments might be able to help...

I followed your instructions, but when I click to close it, there is no delete option, or any other way to remove it from the screen. Is there another way to close/delete it?

I have found that you seem to need the border of the Date Picker to be visible for the Delete key to remove it. Try clicking your mouse on one of the corners of the Date Picker so that the edges and handles are visible (as if you were going to try and resize it), and then hit the delete key on your keyboard. This should remove it for you.

In an online spreadsheet, you don't need this at all. Excel for the web has a newer (and better) feature already built in. kzread.info/dash/bejne/lZ2tztCroNTLXag.html

Thanks !! I inserted this Calendar, works great, except one thing !! When the Workbook is protected to save the formulas and other stuff, this Date Picker doesn't work animore .... Please can you help me ???

The Date Picker is presumably being used here to edit/update the date in a particular cell? That cell would then need to be unprotected to allow the Date Picker to function. I believe you should be able to make this happen by selecting the cell, right click on it and select protection. Then uncheck "Locked". Hopefully this helps. Let me know as I haven't been able to fully test it myself.

Ahhh, that's unfortunate then. I had a bit of a hunt around online in case I had missed something, but I couldn't find any other suggestions to try that made any sense to me.

That currently isn't possible inside the desktop applications of Excel. I am working on a video for it at the moment (which should come out next week), but it is possible to achieve this on the Web version of Excel, by using Data Validation rules, due to an update that rolled out there a couple of weeks ago.

@@paulomalley Microsoft is terrible when it comes to this common functionality as it is widely used. Its hard to believe they struggle to make this as a basic or common tool within Excel.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that. This functionality is already in the web version now, and I expect it to hit the desktop variations soon enough. There is no doubt a lot of testing that needs to be done to ensure that making such a change doesn't break any of the already existing workflows that people use Excel for (and there are a LOT of those).

The thing is stuck to the sheet and doesnt stay on the screen when i scroll down. Help me

Unfortunately that's just how that add-in works and there is no way that I could figure out to get it to stick to the actual worksheet.

This Add in should work fine on just about any version of Excel from 2016 - Present. Is there a particular error you are seeing when you try to add it to your installation? Also, is your office installation a work or personal one?

Thanks for replying. The Add-ins button is not shown at all under the home tab, and I'm not sure if there's a way to add it.

Is this a work installation of Office? It seems like the Add In store might be disabled for you. This can be controlled by an Admin for your IT Team.

google sheets has the option to simply format a cell to have the function of the calendar picker per cell that only opens up when you select the cell thats under the date format. This seems like such a tiresome way to add a date selector

This is true, and Excel on the web has that option too (just like Sheets). Unfortunately, that ability hasn't come to the Desktop client of Excel as yet.

Argh, I was hoping you wouldn't say to install an Add-in! I'm in a Corporate environment and of course, my local IT has blocked all access to install add-ins. EDIT: Sure enough, you have since created a guide on Date Pick via native Excel in the web!
