    @@monkusbee when your ice fishing your sitting right beside your hole so it's not really feasible to use a full sized pole ,it actually works against you in that situation because youd have to be the distance of your pole away from your hole to effectively jig and what not. And don't worry those short poles are plenty strong.

    Fascinating Video in many ways as someone who frequently fishes Pike, Bass and Perch. It does affirm some of my experience. When bass typically strike, they hit hard fast and generally will not get off the hook, Pike seem more almost casual in their approach. I use spinners a lot and rarely will a bass become unhooked because when they hit they bite hard. Pike are hit and miss and I lose a number just because they only passively strike and the one hook sometimes does not set well. Watching this video seems to confirm that experience. I was blown away by the size, on video some of those fish looked fairly big, but when you brought them up, they were much smaller then I expected. Still interesting though.

  • @mikejunt

    @mikejunt

    Жыл бұрын

    This is because bass, perch, and panfish are all suction/inhalation feeders: they don't have teeth, and they usually swallow their prey whole, as they feed by taking a sudden gulp, creating a sharp inflow of water that pulls the prey into their mouth. Pike are toothed fish who rely on their bite to kill their prey and may bite it into pieces if it's too large, so they don't need to inhale the prey. Pike teeth are not patchy and are quite sharp; you can catch them ice fishing because you're a lot more likely to get the hook straight in their lip, but in other seasons you pretty much always need a wire leader as they can easily bite the line off as the first pike does in this video. I've had pike hit smaller fish that I was reeling in and ended up bringing them in with a mouth-shaped imprint of tooth marks on the body.

    99% of the time pike don't want anything moving slowly in cold water - i will catch pike on a deadstick or when jigging for perch but when i bought an underwater cam i noticed that the amount of times i actually caught a pike on deadstick/slow jigging was 1 to 10 compared to when i was making noise or jigging with a big spoon/rapala looking for walleye. in the summer i catch untold amounts of "hammer handles" just fishing a worm or minnow off a bobber trying for gills and crappies

    That's what I thought was gonna happen, tying the line through the spoon would be good if you were using a short leader of 20 or 30lb braid tied to a barrel swivel to eliminate twisting, then whatever you have spooled. Tie in a barrel swivel about a foot above your jig/ hook to guarantee the elimination of twist. Also, let em peel and put your tip way down in the water in thick ice, the edge of the ice will cut mono as fast as a tooth.

    That has to be the best fishin' day, that I've ever seen you have! Those Pike, though, can be some finicky, panicky fish, though. I'll tell you that. I love the colorization on those Bass, too. It's beautiful! Keep on fishin', and tight lines to ya!

    I meant to tell you something, in that first text to you. The Pike that broke you off, wouldn't have been able to do that, if you had used a Steel Leader. In those Waters, try not to forget to use them, especially when fishing for Pike!

    Underwater camera is fun to watch, nice set up! Looked like you were tied direct to the spoon? The hard/sharp edges on the spoon will break you off. I tie on a 4ft chunk of 20lb mono and a snap hook with a swivel on it. If the pike rough up the mono it's easy to feel it and re-tie and the swivel and snap helps with line twist and changing hooks quickly. Tight lines!

    The night before you hit the ice take a few ice cube trays and a dozen or so mackerel. Cut the mackerel up and put some meat in your ice cube trays and pour fish oil, garlic oil in the trays. Let it freeze overnight, take the trays with you and drop a few down your hole every hour.

    Big fan of the channel. You need bigger prongs on your lures as when you set your hook the minnow head is not allowing for the prongs to reach past the bait. Either use smaller bait or bigger prongs for a more effective hook. I love your vids and I hate seeing fish get away after they’ve taken the bait. Keep it up man!
