I think you guys miss the whole story behind this and how much this relates to life. They were in first and she drops the baton true...but the top 8 times go to the final. She could have given up and not run hard to finish, but the fact she did help them get to the finals. The best part about the story is the next day the same 4 girls set a new national record and won Gold!

Thank you love for this post. Everyone has an opinion don't really know facts. They didn't break any rules they actually use quick and smart thinking to qualify. These girls was very hurt by their mistake. They had been clean all year until than. Hey and now they have the record.

Dropping a baton doesn't = automatic disqualification. IAAF rules: the baton has to be recovered by the person who dropped it. Its okay to leave your lane to pick it up just as long as it doesn't block another runner. With that being said, that was an excellent recovery.

Glad someone knows the rules. Bravo. I may also add, once the baton is retrieved, the retriever must go back to the point where the baton was dropped. Perfect example of the is the 2016 Rio Olympics, women's 4x100 relay. Allyson Felix is impeded by the BRA runner and throws/drops the baton. She later gets it, goes back to the spot in the lane where she lost it, and Team USA finished the race. Felix with all her years in track understood you can't file a protest unless you finish the race.

I remember two years in a row at the Regionals the girl dropped the Baton and because this was my mom's first time coming to see me run on that level even though we have already been disqualified I picked up your baton and ran for my dear life and we would have won and beat the record but it just sucked.

Fatboy volgs Actually I think with the women you’re right, but with men’s really teams, they historically have had poor handoffs, while other countries always seemingly having almost flawless hand off.In this example with these kids, yes they are young and will struggle with proper hand offs, but if you look at the other teams hand off, they do a better job of it. They just lack the speed of this team that won.

No, dropping the baton is NOT automatic disqualification. IAAF rules are, the person who drops the baton can go get it, but after must return to the point where it was dropped, all while making sure not to impede other runners in other lanes. That's why many simply DNF the race.

No they shouldn't no the rules first. They dropped the baton at the beginning of the exchange zone. They stayed within the zone
