Insane Curb Rash Alloy Wheel Refurbish - RESTORATION

Ойын-сауық

This Alloy wheel has very bad curb rash and is in need of a full restoration and repair. We also decide to change the colour from silver to black. Most wheels in this condition would be scrapped but this wheel lives again.

This is a badly curb rash wheel that we decided to repair and also change the color to. it had some very bad scratches and had to sand them out and also fill the deeper ones. If you have any suggestions on other ways to do this repair then please leave a comment below. We think the repair came out great.

What about paint striper it'll work on factory powder coated wheels and would of saved you lots of time, also if someone wants them polished to a morror shine what about filling the rashes with aluminum grind smooth then start the polishing process with wet or dry sanding, the wheels look great tho👍

If you are doing it just for sale, this would work. BUT if you plan to keep it for your car, make sure you are using a paint and a clear coat with higher temperature tolerance. Because rims do get very hot(all depending on how you drive though) and regular paint might start to shell off after a while.

Well, using a sander to repair the gouges and scratches is fine, except you wasted a lot of time there. The best way is to use an air grinder with Roloc discs. After grinding the damage then you use a sander going up the grades 80 180 320 500. If you do it properly you will have a faster cleaner repair.

I enjoyed the video and like the format of your restoration videos. Why did you not remove the valve? Lovely looking result. In my experience refurbishing alloy wheels is fraught. I had some chrome plated alloy wheels refurbished by a professional company. They put the wheels in a hot acid bath to remove the chrome because grinding was very difficult and time consuming. The wheels became soft and had to be replaced! My recommendation is NEVER restore alloy wheels.

Beautiful result! All you watchers out there. Before doing this make sure the wheels are round. That is, not bent. Straighten them before undertaking the finish work. Also no cracks. Cracked wheel welding is a no win. They can be straightened, but welding always fails.

I tig welded both of my cracked aluminum rims 3 years ago in my driveway, no failures yet. I wouldn't say "always", it probably depends on the welder, filler material, and technique.
