    if you think a piece is placed at random on a board in a chess puzzle, you are sure to not have the correct solution. Every piece is placed with the utmost care and has a hand in the solution in these kind of chess puzzles. That's the difference between good puzzle makers and the best of the best puzzle makers.

    Nb5 to take rook? Pawn moves don't matter, queen can check on c7 protected by knight. so king must make a move....qe8 eventually will protect knight if king decides to attack. Best case, black still ends up doing the gauntlet but you don't lose the knight and they are down a rook. Worst case, you end up taking all of black's pieces, because war is vicious and none shall survive the wrath after that much loss. lol

  • @kzkaa.

    @kzkaa.

    3 ай бұрын

    1. Nxb5 Kc6 - attacks the knight 2. Qe8+ Kd5 - continuing the gauntlet thing 3. Qa8+ Kc5 - and here we see the problem. The gauntlet idea no longer works because Kxb5 is now an option. Before, Kxb5 is not an option as you cannot capture your own piece. Alternatively : Nxb5 Kc6 Na7+ Kd5 Qa8+ Kc4 - the knight controls the b5 square, but it now interferes with the queen, so Qa2+ check is no longer possible. You will either lose access to Qa2+, or you will allow the king to go to b5, which really doesn't allow for a quick checkmate.

    is this a legal position though? How would have Black's pawns gotten tk those squares? From which square did each pawn come from, hoe did they capture?

  • @proloafer476

    @proloafer476

    5 ай бұрын

    The position is ridiculously improbable but not illegal. Many ways to get the pawns in that arrangement, here's one: Pawn on c3 came from a-file, capturing white's b and c pawns. Pawn on d4 came from g-file, capturing the d, e, and f pawns. Pawn on e5 came from f-file, capturing a white piece.

  • @ralkadde

    To reach this position, pawns have to capture some piece six (6) times. This is no problem, as there are only 3 white pieces on the board, so 15 have been beaten. -> The position is 'legal', meaning it might be reached from the initial position.
