Welcome to The Binge Eating Therapist, where I, Sarah, share insights on your relationship with food. Today, let's dive into a common struggle-resistance. As we embark on changing well-established patterns, especially those intertwined with our eating habits and body image, resistance tends to rear its head.
Resistance, simply put, is the clash between opposing forces within us. However, what makes it complex is that both sides of this struggle are inherently us-two aspects of our psyche vying for dominance. Imagine the internal tug-of-war between the part of you that craves routine and control and the part that yearns for freedom and flexibility.
Here's the catch: both forces-control and freedom-are integral parts of you. The challenge is finding a harmonious middle ground where these opposing elements coexist. This balance is vital, just like reconciling the routine-loving side with the part that craves spontaneity.
Delving into neuroscience, we uncover three distinct brain regions: the thinking, emotional, and primal brains. While our cognitive mind may desire control, our primal brain might perceive it as restriction, creating an internal conflict. To harmonize these aspects, we must address our biological needs, fostering emotional safety, and deciphering our thoughts.
Creating safety in the primal and emotional brain involves meeting basic biological needs and regulating the nervous system. If safety is elusive, binging might become a coping mechanism, providing a fleeting escape. Thus, discovering alternative ways to feel calm and secure becomes crucial.
Resistance can be an ally, signaling incongruities between external advice and our inner truths. Rather than combatting it, we benefit from embracing resistance, understanding its nuances, and seeking clarity amid the conflict. My aim here is not to dictate solutions but to offer perspectives, encouraging you to explore and decide what resonates with you.
In the midst of this internal struggle, cultivating self-awareness through practices like meditation or journaling can help. The goal is not to suppress resistance but to navigate it with compassion, fostering a clearer understanding of our thoughts and beliefs.
Remember, the transformational power lies in self-realization. Instead of seeking directives from external sources, allow yourself the space to reflect, question, and find your own path. Resistance, when approached with understanding, becomes a catalyst for profound personal insights.

Great video, Sarah! Louise Hay said "resistance is the first step to change." She also encouraged accepting yourself as-is *and then* being willing to change. I will continue to practice sending love and compassion to all the parts of me. (PS glad you're keeping yourself entertained 🙃)

Oh, Sarah! This is just brilliant! 👏👏👏 I i’m starting to understand when different parts of me are in conflict. And none of them are wrong they just have different needs. And none of those needs are wrong either. 🎉

I have been binging almost every day for the last 2 years and I am a diabetic type 1! That translates to excessive blood sugar check and insulin. I am a wreck 😢 I have recently discovered your chanel. Thank you so much Sara!

Also T1 and a binge eater although it’s been seven years since it really started but I had issues since diabetes diagnosis 17 years ago. I think the restriction that came with the early days of diabetes at that time especially has been a huge factor in my binging- for so long I was restricted due to having a set insulin dose and so a set number of carbs at each meal, once carb counting arrived it became a lot easier but the damage was there. It doesn’t help that we have the added pressure of BG levels affecting things like sight and neuropathy 😢

@@millimoi4559 Absolutely. I have been restricting myself since I was 14, I am 37 now and it has just explode..Add depression and anxiety in the pack. It is all linked and it can leave you drained..My wish for 2024, serenity and mindful eating! I think it's what we need the most. Strength to all of us!❤🙏

I accidentally ate moldy food. It’s really changed my relationship with food completely. This happened over 2 weeks ago and now it just makes me think completely differently about food. I’m fasting more frequently. Most food does not feel safe to even eat now. From a standpoint that food might be moldy.

I can't say really without knowing you, but the first thing i noticed from your comment was you eat these foods when they are served to you. It could be less about the food and rather the challenge of saying no, asserting your needs and being able to access other options in the moment. Just a thought.
