Inmate beaten to death in Montreal Detention Centre

A jury in its 11th day of deliberation emerged on Tuesday at the Montreal courthouse with verdicts in the case involving the death of an inmate at the Montreal Detention Centre two years ago.
The jury found Tarik Biji guilty of second-degree murder in the death of fellow inmate Michel Barrette, a he‎roin addict who had just smuggled tobacco into the detention centre days before he was beaten to death on June 21, 2016.
Two other inmates who took part in the beating - Garmy Guerrier and Jason Côté - were convicted of manslaughter. All three men were also convicted of aggravated assault.

You can make the argument that he should have been checked on, yes. That this prison system should be more strict with how it allows its prisoners to operate freely, yes. It's just a blatant reminder that this whole thing we call "civilized society" is a very thin veneer over the reality of the fact that we are all still the same savage animals that lived in caves and across deserts. Our technology has evolved, and our agreed upon system of society runs fairly smooth for the most part, but biologically we are still the same as cavemen. It takes shockingly little to shatter the veil of the whole "society" thing and reduce ourselves back to survival of the fittest. Which, as a side note, is why I find it crazy that people allow themselves to become physically weak or obese. In any real threatening situation, you are now helpless due to your physical condition.

It's very sad, very very sad that people are getting lost through the games other people with influence and power play. Of course they're examples for the opposite outcome, people managing to turn their lives around and actually get to have a life. Besides the whole prison situation, i believe the whole world is somewhat institutionalised these days, the majority of people have turned to docile units, weak, indifferent and afraid. And sadly so, because people burn their lives away without realising their true potential and value, to themselves and others around them.

This is horrifying. I don't care what someone's done, a person doesn't deserve to be helplessly beaten to death by a gang and then die in their cell without anyone trying to get them medical attention. They are at the total mercy of the penal system, the least the staff can do is take their custodial responsibilities seriously. If you wanna take away someone's freedom, that total power over someone's life comes with total responsibility for their welfare.

The people responsible are the ones that did the beating. No one else is responsible for the beating. I've worked in a prison. One can NOT see or hear everything when one is in different parts of the unit. If only life was that simple, but it is not. One officer assigned to over a hundred inmates and many cells. It's been that way since day 1. The inmates make sure the guards don't hear a thing with distractions. Walk in their shoes before you blame the guards. Once you do, I doubt you would not be so fast to blame them.

It's not, It's an issue of ineffective doctrine. Every cop is a sergeant and every single one has a patrol car. They respond to calls rather than patrol. I've never seen a beat cop in my entire life. I live in Vancouver. And when they get a call its 7 cars who show up for one homeless guy fighting some one or something equally as benign. Something 2 officers would be more than able to handle. You'll get about 5-7 cars show up and an old sergeant to walk around in circles for 10 minutes then he drives off. Perfect illustration of why most these people are in prison in the first place because they have no compassion for their fellow human beings. They are self obsessed and just up for a cheap thrill - just a real pity that thrill ends someones life. Probably not one of the attackers and observers has any remorse at all and would do it all over again without a second thought. People like that should never be allowed back out in to society.

Yep. Here in Finland human get 3-5 years jail from killing people. So there are 50-60 year old prisoners who have got 5-8 sentence from the killing. Second stupid thing if you are getting sentence from many crimes you get less than normally of each crime. Like a cheaper from the many crimes. So there is very dangerous peoples in the poor citizens neighbours. It is so hidden in the main media.

No inmates would have let this continue for 20 mins. Unless it was a hit then no one other inmates would have got involved. Canadian prisons you can wear your own clothes after 5pm. Most jails the units are a lot smaller than the U.S because they figure smaller units are easier to manage and less gang recruitment on smaller units. The guards sit behind armoured glass or some sort of observation area off range and watch inmates on the cameras. All though most of the time you see they are not watching and doin something else behind the desk. There is always a mop and pail incase someone wants to clean their cell. Depending on the security rating of the jail, guards will walk rounds every 40 minutes to every 2 hours. You can make weapons out of almost anything, I’ve even seen inmates make pipes outta newspaper.
