    *NOTE:* This was a pre-production model. On the final production version, the ammeter *does in fact control the laser tube power.* The video is over a year old, and the K40 laser Monport sells today would never get my recommendation! It's a much lower quality and there are a lot of user issues.

    Great review and very timely. I'm just getting my diode laser dialed in, and I can see a 40W CO2 unit in the near future. Closed loop cooling is definitely the way to go. If I understand correctly, the CW300 is essentially a fan cooled radiator and not a true refrigeration based chiller. You could easily add a series peltier chiller, power supply & thermostat for around $100 to get better cooling in high ambient conditions.

    Amazon seems to be the one selling the K40 now in the UK at just over £400. looking at the review it also seems to work with lightburn which my old k40 never did (not sure if they are running in-between software or if the k40 has an upgraded controller board (like I did to mine with a minigbrl.). The k40 on ebay from UK suppliers is nil which is where they used to be sold in their hundreds. Guess Brexit just made it too difficult for people sending things to the UK for them to bother with.

  • @TheLouisianaHobbyGuy

    Yes John, it works the same way. You just unplug the Y and plug in the rotary. However, you do need to remove all the aluminum bed and standoffs, which everyone does anyway. The Ortur is not the best pick for a rotary though because it's so tall. Monport has a low profile rotary on their website for the 40W.

Are there stops, hold downs or something inside that will help with alignment? Or is this like every other entry level device where the 90 degree corners may not be 90 degrees? Is there another video on alignment?

    I don't know if this has been mentioned, but you do not want to put steel in the laser path, since it neatly 100% reflective, while aluminum is almost non-reflective. Besides being a safety issue, it is bad for the cuts, since the beam chars the back a lot more. That is why laser cutter beds are made out of aluminum.

  • @TheLouisianaHobbyGuy

    @TheLouisianaHobbyGuy

    Polished steel is a bad idea Edward, but there are lots of steel accessories, like magnetic honeycomb beds for example. Lots of materials are reflective, including some wood. It all depends on the finish.

    Rich, Im a new subscriber and would like to thank you for the tips in Lightburn. I have been running Epilog CO2 lasers for many years, and recently purchased the Xtool D1 for my "at home-non business" use enjoyment. My Epilogs run off of Corel Draw, and thats what I'm accustomed to. The transition to Lightburn has been relatively painless with one small exception. In Corel, you have the ability to "cut out" a portion of a graphic so the laser can make a second pass on a specific area without having to redo the entire thing. This is useful to fix a small error or other unplanned mistakes. I see no cut tool or eraser for this purpose. Am I missing something? BTW, It's nice to see your from NO-I grew up not far from you, and love the city-Go Saints.

    @@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy Thanx Rich. I have been chatting with the software developers at Lightburn and they are suggesting Mask or Boolean Subtract to do what I want. I have found a way by converting the graphic to "Paths" or "Curves" as its called in Corel, and add Nodes around what I want to re-trace, then deleting everything else around it. It's the long way around and will only work when dealing with Vectors. Lets say you have a dithered photo you want to etch. Its not layered, and its not a group. In other words, its a raster image not a vector. Then what? Without an erase or cut tool, your stuck. You would have to process it through Photoshop, then import into Lightburn, hope you get it lined up exactly, and then burn the portion a second time. A cut/erase tool eliminates all that hassel.

    Hello from the UK.. And thank you for a fabulous video.... You have nearly convinced me to buy the Monport 40w CO2 laser.. as it looks just about right for me to start a business with...(upgrading as I go) I am a complete newbie and I am learning loads... I wanted a pass through, I wanted a diode as I thought CO2 were dirty and dusty, needing the exhaust out of a window (I intend to use and spare first floor bedroom) and a bucket of water I could fall over or spill, I also wanted air assist....(all these things learned from You tube where I've come across you!) I want these things because I think I need them... What I really want is the best (inexpensive not cheapest) route to market! And the Monport may just be it... couple of questions... Provided I can get it delivered to the UK! 1... can a complete newbie cope with the set up and successfully use a CO2 laser as they seem far more complicated than Diode? ( I am quite DIY competent) 2...where can I buy the 5200 chiller? ( as I would be keen to buy the light-burn compatible one and a better separate chiller) 3.. Am I able to add an air assist unit to the laser, and what would you recommend I use?4...What is a C.O.B file? 5...What else should I need? (apart from supplies obviously!) I have never used a laser engraver but have been researching the business for a few months since I retired from my "lifetime business" Owning and running my own Hotel. I think this would be fun, but I would do a lot more than a hobbyist, I would like a successful retirement business. I am quite techy and arty so I would actually look forward to learning the artwork set up. Sorry this is a long comment. I guess I'm just excited !!

I'm actually testing one right now. Edit --> Machine Settings change the $111 and $112 both to 12000 and then click Write to controller. I no longer use the chiller for the laser. I went to an ice maker because the chiller was allowing the temperature of the water to run over 32 degrees Celsius on a hot summer day. I swap out the distilled water about once a month. Avoid the chiller with a passion cuz it's a joke if you're in a hot climate. Cuz all it does is cool your water to ambient temperature

  • @TheLouisianaHobbyGuy

    @TheLouisianaHobbyGuy

    9 ай бұрын

    I have a video on using an ice maker. *However,* be careful with that! A Co2 laser is meant to be operated in an HVAC controlled environment! Lowering the temp of the water more than 5° below ambient room temp can cause condensation inside the tube. Operating the laser this way can/will cause micro _"short downs"_ and use up a *lot more* of the Co2 in the tube, meaning much a shorter life span. The chiller is designed to prevent this. And then you could always go into manual mode instead of intelligent mode and set the on/off temps to whatever you want.

    @@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy My point is not given a choice between bacterial growth in your water or having the laser tube well over its operating temperature. I choose the bacterial growth cuz that's an easy fix. Currently my laser in a room with no heat. I have a 50 watt aquarium heater to bring the water up to temperature. I could get a higher wattage aquarium heater but with 50 watts I'm not worried about thermal shock on the glass. Sure I'd love to have a large heated garage, but that's not going to happen soon or ever. The lazer tubes are not that expensive for the k40 or replacing the laser. It's just the price of doing business. And when my current project starts making money I should be able to write off the next laser. My project requires not only the lazer but a CNC machine, a 3d printer, a vacuum former and a braille printer.

    Hmm, this changes things. A newbie (me) can get into the game and start practicing Lightburn for less than an Atezer L2 diode. But if I need the more expensive chiller the prices are getting closer...so...My shop in not climate controlled, (unless you accept that God ultimately in control), does temp/humidity play a role in selecting the 3000 vs the 5200? • @TheLouisianaHobbyGuy

    @TheLouisianaHobbyGuy

    11 ай бұрын

    Yes, you need the CW5200 because it has a compressor. The 3000 is just a radiator with fans blowing across it. However, ambient temperature plays a role as well. You have to leave the 5200 in intelligent mode, so it keeps the temp within 5° of the ambient, or else you can run into problems with condensation inside the tube.

The takeaway for me was that you point out it's a yongli tube and that it's the 2nd best in the industry for this level of laser. Your video is amazing, just now a bit misleading given that Monport does not use the yongli tube and ships with a generic in house tube.
