@christianorfali so in most cases, i dont. The clear coats alter the color of the canvases to where you can't see it due to light glare. I am trying a couple of different things though to get my canvases even better. Some colors react differently to the laser and to the light. So there is room for improvements, and im trying to chase them down.

I laser engrave on canvases exclusively. I use the same basic method but I use white, yellow, red and black. I then do a material test and find a speed/power that will work on a greyscale. I have excellent burns with very little adjustments even if I change colors but keep the same amount of layers. I liked your results but it is hard to beat a material test.

Thank you for your comment. From what I've researched on the Glowforge Aura, and it is capable of cutting and engraving on wood. That means that you can also achieve this. If a laser machine can engrave and cut on wood, they can also do these canvases once your machine settings are dialed in through trial and error along the way.

One of the best laser canvas tutorials I've seen. Thank you for making it. I have a 5.5w laser. My pieces are getting better but still having problems. 5.5w @23% power seems ok. But I can't figure out a good quality speed in mm/m. I have tried 400-500 mm/m but I'm not getting consistent results. What is the exact speed setting you used for this creation? All the best.

Thank you for that great comment 😁. Below are common settings to achieve great highly detailed results. Now i dont list 5.5w power, but youll increase that to around 65-75%. Below is the rest of the settings - Your ideal settings to start off to fine tune would be as follows- 10w Power 18-25% / 20w Power 12-18% Speed 350-450 Lpi 150 / Dpi 300 Hope this helps get you in the right direction.

Yeah good video but very distracting having any music. The good video is done with the content of the video. Not by adding music. You may only have 3 people saying anything but trust me many of us just move on to the next video. You have good content. Just perfect that. Keep the music out or if you need for some reason play only while something is engraving and no talking go on. It is so distracting having music playing in the background of any kind especially while wearing ear buds. It amplifies the music and drowns out your words.

Thank you. So, I did not create this concept. One day i had come across a video on this. It was not good at all. Then i searched for another video, and it was also not good. So i took it upon myself to perfect these over the course of a month and a bunch of wasted materials. Then, once i figured it out and was able to produce them repeatedly, a bunch of people on facebook said i have to make a video. So i did and know everyone is doing them, and I've helped a little over 10k people now.

Power would be the same (10w diode), with the exception of the laser wattage being a variable for change. The dot spacing I show can be converted to dpi (dots per inch), probably around 250 dpi. All lasers are the same. The software are all the same, but they just rename some things a little different from one software to the next.

Great informative video. I have been playing with canvas but can't get the settings correct. I have a 10 and 40 w xtool. I have done material tests that show all of the colors but it doesn't transfer to really nice looking images. I use Lightburn and was wondering what kind of algorithm and settings you might use with Lightburn (grayscale, dither, jarvis...) Thanks :)

I have a 10w and 40w for my snapmaker as well. I use the 10w for these. My machine is a 3 in 1 (3d printer, laser, and cnc), so it uses proprietary software called luban. I can use lightburn, but no need as the luban software is highly safisticated. I do these in greyscale, atkinson, and luma algorithms. I make my images so when doing so, I make them laser ready. Fantastic! I've been working with canvas for about a month, and already have obtain outstanding results. But I've been dying to know how to incorporate color and you answered a lot of questions. Very informative and instructive. One question. Is it possible to do multiple colors? There are a number of B&W engravings that would look great in color, but I'd like to say make a girl's hair yellow and the plants green? Thanks.

So for the base coat white, use flat. And the same for the top black coat flat as well. The colors in between dont matter to much, but some colors dont react to well to the laser. So trial and error are needed in some cases. For the most part i use rustoleum spray paints.

You're welcome! The software my machine uses takes many file types. I create images (time consuming using Photoshop and other design software), then just upload as a PNG to my software. I have done multiple colors as one layer ( It still needs a couple of coats in the same fashion), and the results can be astonishing. I plan to make a video doing exactly that in the near future. Im currently working on a method to get good color pop on all colors. When i did it, i used 3 colors, and my purple color did not react well to the laser and was dull. But with my new process im working on, im hoping I can fix that issue. 😁

When I was editing and i got to that part, I knew that wipe was gonna be a eye catching moment of the video.

So I've followed this and want to move forward with multiple colors. If you examine the gcode output for these files it's the same speed and feed through out. That makes sense for one color paint. How then do you do multiple colors at different layers. Not seen a good explanation of this yet. What are your thoughts as you've done them.

So when doing multiple colored layers, the power plays a role and the image itself. Greyscale mode. You have to burn deeper to reach the bottom color without burning all the way through. It can be a bit tricky.

I may have missed it but what system are you using and what is the wattage? Also, I've never heard of the software you're using, have you tried Lightburn?

This was done on a Snapmaker 3 in 1 (3d printer, laser- multiple laser heads, and cnc machine). This was done with my 10w laser module. The software is called luban, which is proprietary software for all 3 functions in one machine. My machine can use lightburn, but no use for it because the luban software has all the necessary commands and functions. And i dont have to purchase an additional software and luban is free with the machine and is update very frequently. There is a facebook group specifically for this machine and is moderated by the company that uses the live feedback for constant improvements.

Need help. I got a small canvas from Dollar Tree. I used 2x white primer then painted it gold. After it dries I put a coat of black. I went to check it and the gold was showing through like the gold was oil and the black was shrinking all over the canvas. What did I do wrong?

There are only a few reasons that the paint would shrink/crack - 1) The paint was not dry enough before applying the next coat 2) the temperature is to cold or to hot outside of the recommended temperatures on the can 3) The coat that is shrinking/ cracking was applied to thick 4) The coat was applied to a canvas that had already been lasered and is trying to be reused.

Dont give up, if the paint is cracking its due to only a few reasons. 1) paint was applied to thick 2) next layer of paint was applied before the prvious coat had time to fully dry 3) the temperature conditions are not within the paint requirements 4) you are trying to reuse old canvases, and where laer engraving has been done, it will in most cases crack. If you follow the video, with applying the paint between 6-12" away and do nice even coats, there should be no issue. Also dont try to speed up the drying. If you try to speed it up with heat gun or direct sunlight, the paint will shrink and crack. Also, use flat for white base, and flat for black final coat. And if you try to seal it with a clear once finished, it could also cause cracking. If you do apply a clear, do it in very light coats with drying in-between each light coat, essentially building up the clear coat through multiple applications.

I make all my images so i try to make them laser ready. For DPI my machine uses individual dot spacing but it converts to 320 DPI. There is some wiggle room for that setting. The larger the project, the less DPI you can use, the smaller the project the more DPI needed. I cover this in another video called getting more detail. I explain in detail how power and DPI work together.

I use xtool space so I know the settings will be a bit different but any suggestions on power/speed?

So the settings will be the same, just converted to the software specs. Dpi would be about 280-300, and speed conversion is roughly 350 to 400. Power will differ based on laser wattage. 10w can be between 20-40% based on image. 20w would be 15-30%, image dependent. And 40w and higher would be less power. If you have any specifics, you can ask and i can convert or help.

If its a 20w diode, you can do power at 25% and dpi at 300, and speed at 350 as a starting point.

Yes, the idea is just removing one layer of paint. Where it gets tricky is that your layers of paint have to be applied extremely evenly. If it's thicker in one area than another, it will show.

My wife said i should have mentioned that in the video, and looking back i should have. I just dampened the paper towel with water. Then after getting as much residue off as i could, i used a dry one to help it dry out.

What other program do you use? I'm currently using lightburn. Do you use imagR to convert or anything? I purchased 20- 8x10 canvas from dollar store for 25 bucks.

I create my images from scratch, so I make them laser ready (you can check out my Etsy shop for images if you want) and don't need much adjusting if any. If I do make any image adjustments, they are minor and I do them inside my machines software (contrast, brightness, white clip, greyscale conversions, or laser engraving algorithms) . I purchased my Snapmaker machine because its proprietary software is solid, and I don't have to purchase any additional software to do anything. Outside of my Luban software, I only use design software (LibreCAD, FreeCAD, Inkscape, AuotCAD, and Fusion, etc..) for making cutout designs, which is the only place that Luban lacks on functions. (20) 8x10 canvases for $25 bucks is a pretty good deal! After taxes, I usually end up paying about $14 for 10. Now when a good sale hits on them, I grab what I can. Everything I do, I try to get material were I'm in the product for around $1-$2 per item (wood, slate, canvasses) and usually have a good ROI.

The images have to be high quality (I have an etsy store where I sell high-quality images in the video description - unfortunately, not a highlander cow ). And you have to have dialed in settings, and you should be able to take PNG, JPEG, and SVG files.

So I've tried painted wood a few times, and the results have never been as detailed as they are with canvas. You can always give it a try!

Do you add a clear coat top?

Most times no. You can, but be very careful how you apply. It needs to be applied in very thin coats. If to heavy, it will cause cracking on the canvases, and destroy your work. Clear coat will also give a sheen to your work, and in lighting, your work can be distorted due to the clear gloss shine.

Once it is wiped and dry do you use a clear coat all over it?

I typically dont, but in some cases, i do. Some people always do. But there is a risk of the paint cracking. If you ever try to reuse a failed canvas, reapplying paints once finished can potentially crack. If you do choose to do a clear coat, do multiple very light coats and build it up. Also, dont use high gloss. In my past experiences, it distorts the image due to light reflection.

What are you using to hold the canvas in place on the snapmaker?

I dont really use anything to hold it in place. The weight of the canvas keeps it steady during the laser job. I've made dozens of these in 4x4, 8x8, and 10x8 and never had any move or slides while in process.

@vincentiafaddis1682 i love it. I dont like limitations, so a 3 in 1 with one software was perfect for me. I had been following them for a few years, letting them get the kinks worked out. And i think they absolutely nailed it with the Artisian. That machine doesnt limit me to just laser work. I can 3d print, and cnc also. They are always expanding its capabilities with new lasers also. Software updates continuously to improve every function.

Can you re use the canvas if you make a mistake by painting over it again?

Sometimes. But 90% of the time, the new paint will crack around the area that was lasered. If you do very light coats of the base coats, to make a even surface, it sometimes works.

So my 10w diode laser has built-in air assist, and I always keep it on with every project I do. It helps with allowing the laser to remove the surface paint without any smoke, causing the laser wavelength differing. I only do one pass with dialed in settings. There is trial and error on these due to different laser wattages and machines.

Ive been asked this question a few times. I have not personally tried with a fiber laser, so you would have to test it. If you can engrave images on wood, you should be able to. The idea is that you're only removing the top layer of paint (very thin layer). With any machine, it takes fine tuning your settings. Run a grid test on a simple one and see what settings work best, and give it a go.

I appreciate your response and input. The music was at 3%, and your the second one to mention this. I guess next time ill drop it to 2%. I just didnt want no background noise, i felt it would have been a boring video for the most part.

Can you make a living from making these? I went to your Etsy shop. You sell them for around 14.30 Canadian each. You’d have to make and sell 10 a day. I have zero doubt you’d sell them, they’re beautiful but making is the trick. At less than 4 hrs each you can only make 4 of these in a 16 hr period assuming sleeping is an issue. lol

You can do decent selling these. Depending on the quality and size of your canvas, you can make $40 to $100 USD per canvas. Again size, quality, and the local market for these depict your outcome of sales. Being able to produce high quality canvases expand your products in the art realm, and allows color to enter your laser works.

Astonishing results but I dont get it. Why is this better than just buying a printed image?

This is expanding product capabilities with a laser engraver. You can be creative and produce one of a kind products. The gold in this one has a metalic shimmer (like glitter) that would be difficult to find in a in a printed image. This allows the laser industry to move into the world of color artistically like hand painted products, but with precision on details. If you watch my video on the squid, I would highly doubt you can find and purchase a printed product that gives the image, fluorescent effects, and glow in the dark effects in one product. This breaks out of the typical wood laser engraving and metals. There are so many reasons this is better than just a print. It's tapping into a new market of products to offer from laser engraving. It's also not a flat print you just put into a picture frame.

Some of these machines are pretty expensive. But you can find fairly cheap laser engravers on amazon for around $250-$500. Just depends on what you want to do with them, or if you want to just get started and figure them out.

That music is so annoying.

Noted, I dont script anything. I just film as I go. When I edit (here recently) the videos, I try to eliminate as many as I could. That was my first video with limited editing skills.
