Inguinal bilateral hernia recovery plus tips
This is a series of videos I shot right after having undergone open surgery on a bilateral inguinal hernia with mesh. I've included some helpful tips on what to do before and after the surgery to help you through the process. I then go through days 3-9, 12, 14, 17 describing the recovery process.
IMPORTANT: Please make sure to view my 2nd video as I had to do a 2nd surgery and have a change of opinion. I SUGGEST LAPROSCOPIC WHEN IN DOUBT
• Inguinal hernia surger...
Light exercise was key to my recovery, but I am not a doctor and everyone is different so using anything listed here is at your own risk, you should listen to your body very closely:
*I used BowFlex weights since I could build weight back up incrementally without much risk, these are exactly the same as Bowflex, but 2x cheaper: amzn.to/2A67DB1
*I highly suggest getting the stand since bending over is painful: amzn.to/2CKPNEO
*Alternatively you can just start with some resistance bands: amzn.to/2VnFInx
***********************
Update: 2015/MAR/10 So its officially been now 5.5 weeks since operation and I can say that life is definitely getting back to normal. I would be a lot better, but I had a house move one week ago which really set me back due to all the heavy lifting I had to do so I lost at least a weeks worth of recovery due to that. Funny that during the 3 days of moving I was able to stand all day and lift a ton of stuff, but the aftermath was quite painful.
I still don't think I'm ready to go for a jog, perhaps in 1-2 weeks time though. The area still has numbness and hurts by the end of the day if I walk/stand too long, but otherwise its fine. No pain no gain! I swim regularly and lift some lighter weights (20 pounds per dumb bell) without any issues at all. Doc says all looks good, no more visits required, but states that hernia full recovery is normally 2-3 months, which I'm slowly starting to believe....
One thing I noticed is that due to the lack of activity since this whole thing started my overall strength especially in my core and legs has dropped and therefore there is a higher chance of injury, so I suggest you remain alert and be extra careful in the beginning until you build up that core strength and flexibility again.
****************************
Apologies in advance for not pronouncing inguinal correctly and for shooting most of the videos while laying on my back.
I'm 40 and vegan so if I got through it so will you!

    What,s up Danny boy, the video was great . I am 62 and just had my right side hernia done 3 days ago, it started 5 years ago the size of a grape and grew to the size of an orange. I just could not take it any more. Feeling better but I know there,s more to come. Watching your video was just what the doctor ordered, looking forward for a full recovery. All you guys out there wIth a hernia " GET HER DONE " don,t wait like I did it,s no big deal , they knock you out and it,s over. Thank,s Daniel for taking the time to make this video. Frankie D.

    cindy spann Hi Cindy! 5 years is a long time to hold off for, but I understand the hesitation especially if its not causing much of an issue (and some live their entire life with Hernias they never know they had). Day 5 post surgery is still just the very beginning of your healing so you'll need to be strong & patient for a few more weeks, but I can tell from your comments that you're a fighter. Was it open surgery? Mesh? Make sure you find something to keep you distracted and motivated while you wait for your body to recover. Wish you the very best during your speedy recovery, let us know how it went when you are back on your feet!

    +Mesh MeNot Well so far so good I'd say. Its been 11 months or so and I can only say that the minor discomforts I used to have are nearly 100% gone. I only get some occasional swelling (I think), and very rarely the lower incision point feels a bit sore if I apply pressure, but that's about it. As for scars, well the left side is just about vanished but the right side is still quite visible so it takes longer than expected to go away. I run or swim almost every day and don't feel any after effects.

    Thanks for taking so much time to share the experience you had. I had the same operation less than 48 hours ago. 3 years ago 1 hernia began to pop out and then a year and a half ago, a twin on the other side. Not much pain at all, but discomfort. I am very active. Walk at least 5 miles a day. 6 mo of the year I bike to work, 22 mi/day. The laying around will be a challenge. I, like you, don't take meds. Don't want to, and do only out of necessity. I thought after 24 hours that I could begin to lessen the dose, then I woke up this morning and felt discomfort in new ways. Your story helps relieve concerns for me. I hope to be back to work in a couple days....that may be too quick, as I have a standing desk and will have to modify that. Anyway, I'm so glad you are sharing so much. I don't generally worry about life, but haven't had a procedure like this for decades. I love the Boflex gift you gave yourself. Ha! I look at my kettle bell and wonder when we'll be able to play together again.

    im 25, had left inguinal open surgery with the mesh. day 1-4 were very hard, day 1-2 couldnt walk without my girlfriend or mother, but after day 3 you start to feel slight progress, and you tell yourself after day 4 you start to feel a little better each day… day 5-6 i could walk on my own and get in the shower but throughout days 1-5 it was hard to have good posture and stand stright when walking, i had mind of hunch over… it has faded. day 6/7 i was walking proper again minimal pain, but still going very slowly. i had my post op yesterday on day 8 and i was able to get in the car for a ride and gonto it and a store afterwards. i didn leave the property of my house until day 8. Today is day 9, im feeling 80% better and took a half mile walk today and got to move around. im starting to feel Me again and can take care of myself better. I do see the light at the end of the tunnel, Stay moving, and dont overdue it, get good rest and drink plenty of water and stay on top of your pain medicine management. You may not feel like youll recover those first few days like me but you will give it a little more time and each day you will see progress. Much love. God bless

My groin hernia is golf ball sized, but.........zero pain but they said it would only get worse with time so better to take care of it before I get too old, i'm 53

    Hi. I'm into the second week after my surgery. I'm doing OK. Moving about OK. I do find it painful to walk with the elastic of my underpants putting pressure on the wound. Is that common? Also I am getting twinges in the groin area at the top of my leg on the OPPOSITE side to the one where I had surgery.... Is that normal? Because my balls were bruised (they are black!!) I'm thinking that this may be referred pain from that surgery or the bruising to that area but am concerned that I may have a small hernia (no lump is visible) on this side also?

    I have had a bi-lateral hernia also. They weren't operated on the same time or place . The first was repaired in London at the Hernia surgery Centre performed under local anesthetic. Surgery on Monday back to work on Thursday. Some dis comfort , but not what I would call pain. That was in 2002 so I was 57 . Other repair performed in 2012 so I was 67 . An associated hernia specialist in Melbourne . Again no post op pain , only minor discomfort . Total heal after a month for both .

    Hi Daniel, thanks for the video! I am 41 and also a vegan. I am on day 5 since laparoscopic hernia surgery on both sides here in NYC, and I am doing very well (they made the incision through the belly button and just below it as well). I had my inguinal hernia for over 5 years, (it started out looking like a golf ball and grew to the size of an apple!). It didn't bother me until about a year ago when I became a personal trainer and started aggravating it a lot with lifting, training, running and cycling. Surgery was good, I vomited 3 times before getting home from the hospital (here it's outpatient - they send you home a few hours after surgery is complete). The first two days were tough, difficulty urinating/walking/getting in & out of bed, feeling nauseos from the hydrocodone acetaminophen painkillers. I stopped the painkillers on day 2 and coped well without them. I also had my first bowel movement on day 2, which wasn't as bad as I expected. I am moving around well now with minimal pain and bowel movements are back to daily! I have been told no weightlifting for 2 months, and since it's my livelihood, I intend to obey :) Thanks again for the video, it helped to see someone else's experience though this!

I'm glad its done and over with, 5 years is a long long time to carry that kind of thing around, but I guess we don't act until the pain gets too much to handle right! Nobody likes going under the knife. Yeah I also struggled with the pain killers and stopped after 2 days if I recall correctly, I vomited on the first day too. My doc kept referring to a guy who ran a marathon after 3 months post op and the guy has no issues, I can't recommend that, but I can recommend to keep your self active. Looks like your recovery is going a lot faster than mine did which is good, perhaps also because it was laparoscopic. Did they add a mesh? Keep us posted on the progress. Thanks!

Swelling around the belly where the biggest incision is (inside my belly button) but pain is bearable. My question and concern is that when i walk, i'm not being able to keep my back straight. I have to be bended down a bit just like i have a hunchback, otherwise it's painful. Also, i can't sleep straight, i have to be inclined for the same reason. Did you go through any of that?

  • @danieldehaan

    @danieldehaan

    8 жыл бұрын

    Hi Walid, I did not have laparoscopic surgery but from what the doctor told me they need to inflate a ballon to make space for the instruments and this can cause a lot of abdominal pain as that has to heal. I can only imagine that this will cause you to hunch but I also think it's an area you will need to keep some flexibility going forwards so eventually you'll need to straighten this out as it heals. It's very close to your operation so everything is still very early in its healing process and some strange stuff is to be expected. If I were you I'd get in touch with your doc and ask just to be in the safe side.

    4 months post-op and Im now regularly running 5K 3x a week. Sometimes Ill swim and sometimes Ill do some weights, pushups, pullups, dumbells etc. I still have some mild discomforts at times which can last a day or just a few hours, but definitely nothing I cant live with and they typically go away over night. It also shifts, sometime on the left side, sometimes on the right side. Sometimes I notice slight swelling if I did a lot of activity that day. It really depends on how much I sit (the more I sit the worse) mainly and its far less of a discomfort vs before surgery 90% less. Most of the time I feel no discomfort at all and forget it ever happened. Im guessing it will take a few more months time to completely go away, the incisions although much much better and softer are still quite visible so its just a matter of time.

    Hi! Well I'm no bodybuilder by any means, I just try to bring some movement into my extremely passive desk job lifestyle with near minimal efforts. Lately I've been far more involved in cardio exercises such as HIIT, jogging or swimming as they tend to remove more stress for me and are the complete opposite of my desk job. When I do lift anything its typically body weight based exercises, i.e. pushups, pull-ups, squats, and some dumbbells. I use 25-30 pound dumbbells for 3-4 sets of 10 reps or until failure. So as you can see very little. I definitely should do more lifting, but long hours at work and family life keep me quite busy (just lame excuses I know, I know) :-) I'm quite sure if you are generally more active than me (or younger) you will also recover faster than me even if you do heavier weights. In terms of discomfort, now that I'm about 4.5 months post op I barely have any complaints, most of the day I don't notice anything. If I do feel discomfort its a 1-3 on a scale of 0-10 and never during exercising, it comes more from sitting or wearing tight business cloths. Occasionally I'll get a sporadic more painful burning/sheering sensation which lasts 2-3 seconds only, Nothing to worry about. As it stands I'm still quite happy and relieved with the decision to do the operation. I can only share my experience, but each one of us is uniquely different and will experience something slightly different.

    Hi, I was just wondering what you think the recovery time will be until I can fully distance train and lift weights after the surgery. I have two inguinal hernias, one on each side. although one I was born with since I was born prematurely by three weeks. I didn't know I had the one until I had the other side checked. I had a loopy thing in my scrotum for my whole life (which is 17 years). I run cross country and lift frequently, and the season is coming and I want to be in good shape for that. Thanks!

    Tough question, not sure what the size, location and type of surgery you will have. I also don't know how intensely you work out. You are real young at 17 which is super positive since you'll heal in no time. Plus you're already real active which is another plus. The doc told me one guy he did surgery on was running a marathon 3 months after surgery no prob. This is exceptional but obviously you don't have to start with a marathon and can start with something less demanding earlier on. I'd be more cautious with lifting though. Always use a weight belt too. Best you ask your doc once the surgery is over how quickly you can progress.

    LOL, yup these things never happen at a good time. If you can leave the hospital by foot on the same day or next day then yeah you can make it to the wedding, but you'll have to find a place to sit comfortably (the more in a laying position the better). You won't be comfortable but you'll manage. As for the move, well it's a month later so sure you'll be fine to walk around but I wouldn't recommend being the guy to life heavy stuff at all. I also moved lottery 1.5 weeks after my surgery but I hired some guys to do the lifting for me and only did what I could in terms of unpacking. I took my time.

    Daniel, thank you for the great video.I'm having an inguinal surgery in about 3 weeks.. I'm kind of nervous, I would like to ask you some questions..My hernia doesn't hurt at all... also, my hernia is reducible, however my hernia is pretty big, is about the size of a tennis ball and it descends down to my scrotum... The urologist requested a ct scan, however when I visited the surgeon, my hernia was hiding... so he wasn't able to see how big my hernia is and I didn't tell him because I assumed that the ct scan would have revealed such information., however i'm not even sure if he had taken a look at the ct scan results. . Will this be an issue during the surgery?Given that I'm not experiencing any pain at this moment, does this mean that I won't experience any pain after the surgery ?I have heard about how guys experience problems going to bathroom for number 2 alter the surgery, what can I do to avoid this problem? I have heard that during the days previous to the surgery I should abstain from certain foods.... Could you please tell me what kind of foods should I avoid and what else should I do during the days previous to the surgery? What do you mean when you say "water based foods"? Thank you

  • @danieldehaan

    @danieldehaan

    8 жыл бұрын

    Ok so A.) I'm not sure why you had a CT, I had a simple Ultrasound and that was enough. If yours is so large then it should be very clear. Perhaps it's due to the location that they needed a CT and yes I would also imagine a CT is good enough to see such things. I'm also quite certain that you will feel pain after surgery even if you feel none now as they need to cut tissue to get to the hernia and then stitch and probably add a mesh all of which has to heal up, but it's not quite as bad as one may think otherwise they wouldn't let you walk home a day after or on the same day as the surgery. Have you had a second opinion from any other doc? Finally yes, going to do nr2 can be quite a challenge as you'll likely be constipated and it hurts to push on your abdominal muscles, even laughing hurts a lot at first. I highly recommend not eating heavy foods a couple of days before going in for surgery. Eat fruits and other very water based food. Drink plenty too after surgery.

    +Daniel de Haan And no eating or drinking besides a bit of pure water at least 12 hours before surgery I was told. This is so they can get the general anesthesia amount right and lower the chance of nausea after surgery. It's kind of like trying to figure out how much alcohol gets you tipsy, depends on how much you ate, hence they keep everyone on an empty stomach and base it on body weight.

  • @danieldehaan

    @danieldehaan

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Daniel de Haan oh and don't drink too much before surgery, try to go in with a completely empty bladder, reason is that the anesthesia makes it difficult to urinate and that will be your first challenge. It takes a few hours or even a day for the stuff to get out of your blood so the longer you don't need to urinate the easier it will be when you do need to to go. In the worst case they can always insert a catheter to urinate (sometimes it's already there when you awake) but I'm told that it's not a nice experience.

    hi i really like your experiences. I had my triple surgery on the 1 of october. unlike yourself i was only given paracetamol or 1 other stronger pain med and a mix drink if i get constipated. but I have only had to take paracetamol once daily. I think thats due to high pain threshhold. but i do get the catching feeling in the inguianal areas. My only fear is it happening again or getting hernias from insertion points but i hope it never happens. Seeing your video helps me know I am not only one feeling the same things. I hope in 3 to 6 months times I can get back into my weightlifting routine. my hernia are not from weightlifting if your wondering. I have had the discomfort for years even before lifting. My parents say I probably had it from young as I use to strain alot due to IBS. sorry rambling. But thank you for the video.

    Thank you Daniel for your video. Very helpful your video.Last Wednesday I underwent an open surgery in order to repair a pretty big left side inguinal hernia. I haven't experienced much pain after the surgery however I have some concerns regarding some symptoms that I have been experiencing..I don't know whether these symptoms are normal . I'm referring to the fact that my lower abdomen is kind of swollen... I don't know if this is "Seroma" or "healing ridge".. I'm concerned because the swollenness decreases when I lay down..... just like a hernia does... Also, I was touching the skin of my left lower abdomen and it feels as if there was some fat under the skin... is this the mesh? does this mean that it would always look as if I had a small hernia on the left side of my abdomen? I'm also concerned because I have been feeling some pull out sensations on the left side of my abdomen... the feeling is similar to what I used to feel whenever my hernia was about to come out. I must point out that the day of the surgery I was given a scrotal support because after the surgery my scrotum was pretty swollen however the swollenness of my scrotum is pretty much gone.Thank you.

    +Annynick C I wish I could give a clear answer to this, but I'm not a doctor and I don't know the specifics of your operation so it would just be random guess work. I can say for sure that I had swelling for quite some time and often questioned if it was normal or not. In particular some swelling above the incision, with a lot of pressure (i thought the hernia had moved up) and also below the incision. I'm also quite certain the mesh will not form a bump, I have none at all. Obviously the incision itself is quite swollen in the beginning. I'd say when in doubt contact your doctor/surgeon and get it checked out. Perhaps you can send a video or images to him/her. If its only been a few days after surgery I wouldn't worry much, you can't expect anything to seem normal at first. If it gets worse then don't delay, if it gets better (as it sounds) then relax, trust in your body to know best and be patient until your checkup.

    Hi, typically they make patients leave the same day or next day on their own 2 feet, but I won't lie, it's not comfortable and you'll be doing it very slowly. I think in the US they may take you out by wheelchair, but you'll have to do the rest yourself. As for home chores, well the first few days wont be easy, but not impossible. I could be on my feet for only a few minutes at a time at first. Don't do stairs if you can avoid them in the beginning. Your wife or family should help out where they can possibly take a few days off work to support you during the first week at least depending on your state. My video should show the progress I was making quite closely. Each person is different so you might be a lot better. Open surgery will take more time than laparoscopic to recover. I did open on both sides. As for the surgery, don't be worried it's a very simple procedure for most doctors. You've held on for way too long, get it fixed you'll be happier for it! Good luck!

    I had a bi lateral in March. Inguinal of course and still getting there. Main problem Seems to be sensitivity of the general area, clothes etc will make it very painful throughout the day where as when I wake up I have no pain, the scar tissue is still pretty thick especially on the right where I suffered a bad staph infection that left a deep long ten cm hole. The skin sensation of the pelvis has started to desensitise as brushing pubic hair follicles before with my hands was very tender the SF at tissue and normal tissue is still painful and can sting often when brushed, hoping this will die down soon, anyone else have this, I often find myself pulling my waist band away a lot. I'm A 25 year old athlete and marathon runner and could do without it!

    worldz Hi! Its been nearly 3 months now since surgery and I can say without hesitation that I can now do everything I did before surgery with only very very occasional minor discomforts. I run 2-4K, I do the Insanity HIIT workouts, I swim, I lift weights, I stand for hours in the MRT, I long board, and I mountain bike all without any issues. Sitting for long hours in the office can sometimes cause a numbing feeling so its good to take breaks. The only warning I can give is that after an extended period of low or no exercise your body needs time to build back its strength so you have to be extra careful not to overdo things that could lead to injury and take it a step at a time. Most days I don't even remember I had surgery until I see the scar lines.

  • @worldz9749

    @worldz9749

    9 жыл бұрын

    Daniel de Haan Hi, Great to hear that Daniel !! Maybe the numbing while sitting is from some nerves that get entrapped in the mesh when your sitting, idk, do you still feel the mesh? Hope all keeps improving.

  • @danieldehaan

    @danieldehaan

    9 жыл бұрын

    worldz I never really felt the mesh at all, I only felt very acutely the spot where the mesh is stitched to the (bone?) which is at the very bottom of both incisions. There remains numbness directly on the left side of the left incision and right side of the right incision but that is because the nerves were cut by the incision and according to the doctor the sensations should return over a period of perhaps 6 months to a year. The numbness I feel from sitting for prolonged periods of time are in my opinion due to lack of blood flow to the area. Btw, I mentioned all those exercises above, but I take them all at a lower intensity for now, for example I can't possibly do the entire Insanity routine and definitely not each day. Are you having surgery any time soon or recovering now?

    Sounds like your doing very good. From what I've seen taking it easy is the best, even though it can be frustrating, it is open surgery and it takes time. My best friend had one diagnosed about 4 months ago but he's REALLY hesitant to get surgery. He's afraid of not being able to get back to a normal life after surgery or basically being crippled with pain, meanwhile he doesn't go to workout anymore, which sucks since he was my spotter and also my friend. So I am trying to help him out with info and trying to help him stay positive trying to show him it's not the end of the world, and that it's possible to get surgery and it'll be OK or even better than before surgery, instead of the Watchful waiting approach which I think is limiting his life. That's why I thank you so much for your video It helps get things into perspective and also you're a very cool guy . How long did you wait before getting surgery in total, did you wait until you had no other option?

  • @danieldehaan

    @danieldehaan

    9 жыл бұрын

    I'd say the moment you start to change how you are because of an injury it's time to get it fixed. I tried to avoid it for 3 months and read all about natural ways to heal it but those exercises (lifting your legs up while laying down etc) didn't alleviate it. When I got to the point that I could no longer spend more than 20min on my feet and was non stop worrying always examining myself and getting into special positions when sneezing or coughing, that's when I knew something had to be done, but those months took their mental toll and it completely stopped my exercises which led to weaknesses in other areas resulting in a pulled back muscle etc. it's not a fun place to be in but the good news is that it's a quick and straightforward procedure that 100s of thousands go through each year in the US alone. I'd say the sooner he gets this behind him the sooner he can get back in the gym spotting you and flirting with the girls ;-) worry will kill you given enough time.

    Just before surgery I was barely able to walk more than 500m at a time without having to rest to bring the pain back down. It progressed from a bothersome pain to nearly intolerable pain in the course of 2.5 months. The budging was also clearly larger with time. Post operation 3 months later I can easily do 6km walk without feeling any major discomfort but some swelling and some discomfort can be felt the next day so I know it's probably still going to take a few more months for a 100% full recovery. I feel I'm at about 85-90% (depends on how active I was) of perfect recovery. Prior to surgery I was at about 30%. So yes I'm glad I did it but i won't be satisfied until I'm 100% there :-)

The incision site still giving me sharp pains every now and then but I’m thinking it’s from the scar tissue which is still lumpy underneath. Walking very well but jogging still a no no (tried last week but was sore after it, again scar tissue tightness I hope) It’s the scar tissue that I feel is the worst part.

I'm getting back to normal now off pain killers ib probin was good for me though I did have a perscription for Tylenol 3 witch I did not use little sore in my right side laying sleeping at night but I just turn over to my left .All things considered it's going very well and a lot of stress went away after the actual procedure was done as well.Hope your recovering quickly Daniel just don't try to do to much to soon well the weekend suited to be good weather wise here in eastern Canada so I should get out and enjoy it .Good days ahead Daniel all the best Ron.

I'm no doctor, but I certainly don't recommend her riding you as the weight and grind will cause irritation, pain, bleeding and possibly worse for at least a couple of weeks if not more. Oral sex is a good alternative to start with but again wait at least a week or two since there is for sure swelling which can cause the sperm tubes to be compressed and could lead to pain during ejaculation which may give you unnecessary concerns and worries. The longer you hold off the more she and you will enjoy it when the time does come I say! Good luck with the recovery.

    It really depends on how big of a hernia, how it was performed, how quickly you recover and what kind of exercises you'll be doing, but even then 1 week is really short and any kind of exercise will bring some strain to that area. If you want to stay active that is good and you should experiment but I recommend starting very light & careful and then checking to see if you feel more pain or notice more swelling the next day and if not then stepping it up a bit. Any sharp pain is definitely not good, but keeping active with plenty of breaks in between is ok. Some people can do quite a lot after one week while others can barely walk more than a few feet so you must test for yourself, but the priority is always to let your hernia heal well.

    Kat D Hi Kat! Well I was back in the office after 2 weeks, but then quickly realized it was a tad to early and had to work from home for a 3rd week. The total cost was SGD 25400 which included the surgery and everything else besides the initial ^ followup consultations. It was at a well known private hospital (Gleneagles) and done by a top surgeon. 1 night stay was mandatory (some require 2), but it was not quite as tough as I thought it would be to go home the next day. Dont forget I had open surgery on both sides, not laproscopic. I believe laproscopic surgery has a far faster recovery period and may even be ambulatory.

All I can say is once they start the general anesthesia you're out in a few seconds (I had just enough time to tell them "good luck" and before you know it it's over and done with and you find yourself in your room and can start focusing on the recovery.

    About 5 months in I suddenly started to get more pain and swelling than usual for a few days. It was just below the incisions and I was worried that somehow another weak spot was starting to form below my hernia. I then went off to Hawaii where I was far more active than usual for a months break and it all simply vanished. As a matter of fact, In the past month I have not had any pain at all, even the mild discomforts I used to have were gone! :-) I still do notice occasional very light swelling (I think), but am not sure what the root cause may be. Nothing I'm really concerned about. So yes all good at the moment :-) P.S. One incision is still visible, the other is nearly gone.

    How do you feel now? Did you get Laparoscopic with mesh?

  • @stevef7814
    @stevef78148 жыл бұрын

    DO NOT have laparoscopic hernia repair with mesh. It goes in easy, but if you have problems removal is very difficult. Open repairs allows for much easier removal in the event it's needed. They don't tell you this before surgery; I am. It ruined me.

  • @danieldehaan

    @danieldehaan

    +Sven Fargo Sad to hear you had issues, have they been resolved or do they need to fix it all now and do it the right way? I have to agree. Laparoscopic is less invasive and you heal a lot faster, but its not as easy for the surgeon and the job cant be done as precisely. If your not planning on being very active (you might be quite old) then go with Laparoscopic, but if you are planning to remain active for many years go with open surgery. I was told by the doc that there is a 1% chance of recurrence with laparo and 0.1% with open surgery.

    The top docs now know chronic pain is the #1 concern, not recurrance. I'm middle aged and still run, bike, etc...many 20 something's online are having laparoscopic repair and going back to weight lifting, so I don't think that's the issue. Fixing problems if they occur after surgery is a specialty few are good at with laparoscopic repair; with open surgery any general surgeon can fix problems. I'll need to see one of the few specialists to fix my problems, unfortunately.

    I am glad you mention this because after the surgery on March 12th for me I was told that I had a sample taken for to rule out any cancer and the test would take 3 weeks to come back. If it was positive for CA I would hear from them if not thats a good sign. I never heard from them so I'm please. So it was not a hernia biopsy it was to rule out cancer in that area.

  • @danieldehaan

    @danieldehaan

    Hi James, no I have not noticed any difference, but let's not forget that in relation to swollen balls it might look smaller. Also all the region is swollen which will bulge out and pull skin back etc making things look (key word is: look) smaller. It's like after you trim the area suddenly you look an inch bigger. As a side joke not meant at you, it's not the length of the wand that counts but the magic inside it ;-)

    Hi Ben, I certainly had discomforts within a month of the operation and it mainly was caused by sitting with tight pants at work. Often I'd just keep the belt and pants button loose. Certain areas were very sensitive others had no sensation at all. Scar marks were very clear and even a year later they are still visible but less and less. Things will 100% get better but it takes a bit more time. Not sure about the infection you had but that could not have been much fun or help.

    +Daniel de Haan thank you very much for your time and reply! It's getting there and I've just started running again 20-30 mins at a time I'm in the forces so I'm waiting to get back to it but I'm not rushing it! Pain is really nerve related and really random mainly set off by tight clothes etc and ultra sensitive skin and scars. The Infection looked like a bullet wound but it's back up and healed now from inside out, just got to be patient I think! 9 weeks from op now and set back about 4 weeks by infection but the mesh should be firmly set now. I'll just be patient.
