Doctor's Own Inguinal Hernia Repair and Recovery

About a month ago I discovered that I had two inguinal (groin) hernias. I decided to have them both repaired robotically. This is my experience from post op day one through post op day three.
Here is my three month post op video: • My Post Op Complicatio...

I just turned 60 and I had 2 hernias repaired with laparscopic surgery exactly 3 weeks ago and yes I agreed to mesh for both hernias. 1 more week and I am going back in the gym. I'm not gonna lie and say that it was not painful or uncomfortable but it wasn't THAT bad. The first 4 days were the worst and I took the codone pills the surgeon prescribed. After that I dropped back to Advil for a couple more days. Just get plenty of sleep and every morning when you wake up the pain is a little less. I made myself get up and walk around which I think helped. On day 7 we went to a boardwalk and watched fireworks and I did a lot of walking that day. When I got home that night it was hurting and burning so I took 1 more codone pill. There was a lump about the size of a golfball where the original hernia was. That lump has reduced itself down to the size of a marble now. I still fill some pulling pain here and there like if I twist or pick up a case of water or whatever, but it keeps getting better day by day. Don't worry guys you got this! I was a nervous wreck about the anesthesia and surgery but everything went smooth. The hospital staff were like a well oiled machine. Don't put it off and suffer with hernias. Go ahead and get it fixed so you can back to your normal routine.

@@charalambos Good to hear. Whatever they do during the surgery will cause constipation. I did not take a laxative before and so no bowel movement for 2 days. Also dont het in too big of a hurry to get back in the gym. I went back on the elliptical after a month and had a scare thinking i pulled the surgery repair or something. Its ok now tho. The anesthesia has advanced now and they do it with computers. So that was no issue. I woke up 30 min after the surgery. You will be fine. Good luck!

I am scheduled to meet my general surgeon 5/17 and starting to get nervous and decided to watch some videos to learn more before I go so if I have anything I need to choose from like which type of surgery that way I have a little more knowledge. Do you have any other advice before going into this appointment to meet my surgeon and schedule my surgery? I got this inguinal hernia out of the blue at 8weeks pregnant and now I not only have it but also Diastasis Recti and this general surgeon’s nurse straight told me over the phone that he doesn’t do diastasis Recti so he’s only seeing me for my hernia surgery. I've had 2 inguinal hernia repairs several years ago, at different times. Mine were done laparoscopically and I did have some soreness for the first few days, but it wasn't bad at all. Nothing at all like you described. In fact, I've had several surgeries, (knees, shoulders, appendix) and I felt the hernia repairs were easier than the others.

Just had bilateral surgery done laproscopically yesterday. The surgeon felt using mesh was apropos on my 64 year old groin. When I was 5 1/2 had the first bilateral hernia surgery and about 27 years ago had an abdominal surgery so it took a bit of effort to unbind those adhesions before the surgeon could fill me up with gas in order to creat the space to work. I'm pretty sore, the gas is pretty bothersome but nothing compaired to the downright agony I experienced after the abdominal surgery which included a duodectomy and vagonomy which lasted for a few years. I can't wait to go home tomorrow and play the guitar although singing might need to wait a bit. I play between 2 and 5 hours a day and just this small time away is almost as painful as my tender belly. Thanks for the fine video!

Today is my 3rd day post op from a complex ventral hernia repair and robotic abdominal reconstruction with transversus abdominis release. They installed a 30x30cm mesh. I’m doing the half dose of pain meds as needed, otherwise it’s Tylenol. I came home with a drain which is the most painful part so far. I definitely agree with the “no sneezing, no coughing, and no laughing” recommendation. I would also add “clearing your throat” and “blowing your nose” to that list! One thing to keep in mind is while delaying sounds good, the hernia will only get worse. It's easier to repair a smaller hernia. I know because that is what I did and I ended up have 2 surgeries ( the first one failed) to fix the really large hernia.

I wish I knew about the bowl obstruction a year ago. I lost my younger brother (62) last October due to a incarcerated/ strangulated bowl obstruction. Glad to have found this video. 29 here, I was diagnosed with two indirect inguinal hernias, one each left and right sides. After my consult I made the decision to have the mesh repair. Had the robotic laparoscopic repair for both in one procedure. First day fully home, I had the gaseous pain, bloating, and pain where the actual repairs were done. My incisions don’t hurt. Yesterday, Day 2 recovery; still had the above pain, bloating; but the gaseous pain is starting to subside; I had my first bowel movement yesterday late morning. Sleeping is rough as I can’t sleep on my sides yet….last night felt slight nerve pain twice, once was a tingle and then second time it shot up the right side of my torso to under my right arm. Today; Day 3, gaseous pain is pretty much gone, still have minor pain; passed a regular bowel movement this morning and had a nerve shock go down my right leg. Just hoping my recovery goes well. I know it’s not 100% fool proof repair but I hope I can get back to my normal life in a month. Was great to see I’m not alone.

I had two right inguinal hernias. 2011 and 2019. Lapriscopic with mesh and open repair with mesh. First hernia failed and now I am having a lot of pain complications after the second surgery. Don't celebrate too soon. Recurrent hernias are much worse than the first. Don't think that you can just start doing competitive or very active sports just because the pain goes away. Hernias have a way of slowly sneaking back up gradually over time and the older you are the weaker your abdominal wall becomes. In addition, any subsequent hermia surgeries weaken it even further. Be careful. I learned the hard way. DONT LIFT!!!!

I had inguinal surgery on my left abdominal area and decided to choose the mesh too. Fingers crossed it will not have any issues with that down the road. I'm experiencing everything you mentioned. My surgery went quick, only an hour in half, so prayers my doc knew what he was doing. Lol How long was yours? I'm 37 and play golf regularly and enjoy biking hiking and many other outdoor activities and sports. I've been experiencing some gas but glad I took a Gel Gas pill shortly after I came home. I've been taking my oxy 5 MG every 6 hours and IB 800s in between that 6 hours to help with swelling and inflammation. I also been icing all day off and on. So far the pain has been manageable but I have a pretty high pain tolerance. I'm praying I don't sneeze or cough in these next 72 hours lol. The pain from just a light cough earlier when I got home was pretty sharp and intense right where they did the repair. I was able to shower and move with the same discomfort you described. I also been taking solar plunge showers regularly now for the pass 8 weeks. I even did it today but don't think that the shivering and tightening of the ab muscles was the best idea but I tried to control my breathing to help the shivering subside and will continue to do this. I'll check back in the next 4-6 weeks with an update. I'm sure others are curious too. Thanks for posting I like and commented and you'll get my subscribe after your response. 🍻

I can work out again with complete confidence and don't even feel the mildest pain or discomfort. I read somewhere that the success and speedy recovery after hernia repairs lies in choosing a surgeon that really masters their technique. I am on day 5 of laparoscopic umbilical hernia surgery and when they went in they found inguinal very close to it so they made it into one and put the mesh inside. Day 1-2 was painful. I started coughing the 2nd day so that sucked! Talking was painful too. Nothing but Ibuprofen and Tylenol through. Did you have a binder? How often did you use it of you did? Had BM 2nd day and every day since but also started stool softner on day 2 but i have constipation issues. I am a single mom with no family to help so I am doing what I can for myself. My only issue is I've just been so tired and sleeping a lot more than usual. But I also worked the last year so much that I was on the verge of a meltdown. I am just so terrified that something will happen and I will have to go through another surgery. But I guess so far so good.

Just had one done. If anyone reads this, you need the surgery. Hernias won't heal on their own. The Gas pain is truly terrible and the bubbles when they go up to the diaphragm, for certain people, will result in pain radiating to the shoulder and neck. I'm not talking some tension pain. I'm talking just shoot me now pain. Pain so bad you can't even breath and you start to panic. It happened when standing to go pee and the bubble would go to up. When reclined I was relatively pain free. The next worst part is if you had the air also go into your scrotum and penis. Yeah your penis looks like some f'd up 9 inch long 4 inch diameter balloon animal. Scrotum can inflate so large that you get fissures all over it so for days you feel like you have 1000 paper cuts all over your junk. Then comes the sensation of not pooping for 5 days. Sooooo yeah. Good luck ya'll. It ain't fun and don't do the recovery alone!!!! oh one last thing. I was not able to get into surgery for 2 months!! So I survived with the hernia by using an appendix holster. Yes it's a pistol holster. It applied pressure at the proper location to keep my guts from popping out. Worked great. Enjoy.
