Infallibility and Inerrancy: Foundations - An Overview of Systematic Theology with R.C. Sproul

Jesus believed and taught that Scripture is the infallible, inerrant Word of God. Do we trust that the Bible is without error in all that it teaches and reveals? In this message, R.C. Sproul shows that our answer to this question influences every other doctrine in our faith.

This is such a blessing, to sit in on such an important teaching - thank you for making this free resource available 🙌 Man shall not live on bread alone, but by every Word that proceeds from the mouth of God. “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” ‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭4‬:‭12‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3

"No one gets passed the first verse of of the Bible without facing the test of submission to Scripture. It isn't unclear, it isn't foggy, it isn't oblique. It is crystal clear. So you never get past the first verse without declaring your submission to Scripture, or your lack of it." -- John MacArthur Before the cross and his resurrection: Matthew 24:36 “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only. Mark 13:32 “But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. After his resurrection before his ascension: Acts 1:7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority." Seems to imply he now knows, as he is reclaiming the glory he laid aside (Philippians 2:6,7)

This fails to properly account for the unified divine nature of Christ. While the Savior took on human form and lived a fully human life during His earthly ministry, He remained fully God as well, one person with two distinct natures - human and divine. His divine nature was not diminished or limited during the Incarnation, as that would run contrary to the immutable nature of God. The verses you cited from Matthew and Mark record Christ speaking from His human perspective and experience during His state of humiliation on earth. As a true man, there were some things unknown to His human mind, such as the timing of the Last Day. However, this does not negate His omniscience as God. , In Acts 1:7, the risen and glorified Christ is not claiming new knowledge, but simply reiterating that the timing of prophetic events remains known only to the Father, in line with His earlier teachings. The Incarnation involved no loss or gain of knowledge for the eternal Son's divine mind. , Philippians 2 speaks of Christ's voluntary self-emptying and taking the form of a servant for our redemption. But this was a veiling of His divine glory and prerogatives, not a divestment of His divine attributes from His Being as the eternal second Person of the Triune God. So, there was no acquisition of new knowledge after the resurrection. Christ simply spoke at times from His human experience and perspective, while remaining omniscient and all-knowing as the eternal Son of God. The Bible affirms that Jesus was omniscient, even during his earthly ministry, see John 1:48, John 4: 16-18, John 16:30, Matthew 12:25, Luke 6:8. Luke 22:7-13. A high Christology is crucial to avoid the errors of subordinationism and the Kenosis heresy.
