    @Bobby Brady Hero, N.: A man (or occasionally a woman) generally admired or acclaimed for great qualities or achievements in any field - Oxford English Dictionary, definition 3. He's generally admired by his fans and was well acclaimed in the motorsports world, therefor, yes, he is technically a hero. Stop being a jerk and trying to start arguments and let people think what they wanna think; you're not an authority figure.

    1:22 The safety team already knew right here that Justin's injury was serious. Watch the safety truck pull up to Karam's car then gun it to Wilson's. Another crew member must have radioed the driver.

    Obviously a tragic death, but he honestly left quite a legacy. This crash was really one of the moments that made people realize safety features like halo were necessary and this will undoubtedly save other drivers in the future. In a way, he lives on as a guardian angel in the new cars, protecting drivers from suffering his fate.

    @@hugolafhugolaf Given the Halo's safety record across multiple racing series (for instance saving Grosjean's life in his terrible crash), I would like to know? Is it the visuals alone or do you have other concerns? I mean, I am willing to admit that they look like shit, but my personal two biggest concerns about the halo acting like a funnel for smaller debris (like the spring that hit Massa in the head in like 2009) or increasing the time to get out of the car/making access harder for safety crews have turned out to be non-issues. Would love to hear your perspective on the matter.

Drivers are aware of the dangers and if they want to race with a canopy or head protection nothing is stopping them racing in Le Mans, GT racing, Touring cars etc. The danger is a large part of what draws the drivers to single seater racing and is a large part of the reason we as fans admire them so much.

    I covered auto racing for more than 25 years as a photographer and photographed many hundreds of crashes, so I have learned to see many details before and as the accidents happen and to see even more when reviewing still and video footage afterwards. It is interesting that Wilson's car never changed it's line until after safely getting past Karam's car, then Wilson's car makes a gradual left turn as the brakes are applied hard (note the skid marks and the smoking tires although the car is not sliding sideways.) His head does not drop forward until after he passes Karam's car. It appears he remained aware and functioning at least until just before he hit the inside wall. Even after being hit in the head, he may have been able to avoid hitting Karam or another car.

    I would suspect Felipe Massa feels very very lucky to be alive still as something similar happened to him in Hungary. He hit a spring that came off Barrichello's and it went into his eye. Sadly for Wilson the part that went into him was a little too heavy and and hit him in the wrong part of the head. Henry Surtees (former f1 champ John's son) had a similar fatal incident to Wilson.

    I feel like the aero packages this year have been a double-edged sword on ovals. Most of the oval races have shown an increase in lead changes and some great racing, but when these guys crash, there's so much debris that it just increases the odds that something like this could happen. There has been great resistance from many F1 fans with regard to cockpit protection. I can't fathom why. The halo being introduced to F1 for 2018 doesn't affect the viewers' experience one bit, but it can make all the difference in the world to a driver. To put it a different way, hopefully one that will make anti-Halo F1 fans get a better perspective on the implementation of the Halo. If Justin's car had been equipped with effective cockpit protection, he would not have died as a result of the impact with the debris. And if you think that a piece of carbon fibre can't hurt you, then I challenge you to pop on a helmet and have a chunk launched at your head. The form over function crowd should start thinking.

    Watching the accident was gut-wrenching. It was just an amazing race up until that point and then this accident happened. First I thought Sage was the one that's hurt and then they showed the replays with the nosecone flying about...

    This is weird all a weird feeling for me having met Justin at all the Denver GPs back in Champ Car and him living about 25 minutes from my house and his team(RuSport) for many years was a 10 minutes drive from where my childhood house was. First time a driver I've actually met and talked to has passed.

    This accident has to bring about some very hard and smart thinking. We don’t need a knee jerk measure! A lot of testing and retesting and modifications may be called for to prevent another death or serious injury! This much loved and enjoyed sport of ours, should be a lot safer than it is. I drove Formula Ford when I was 16 - 17. I’ve loved motor racing since I was just a little kid. I’ve seen some horrific crashes and been in a couple. I was very lucky to have not have been hurt or killed. Back in the early 70’s, there wasn’t much you could count on to protect you in case of a crash. We’ve come a long way, but we just can’t stop looking to improve things further. I hope no more deaths, that would be a great result!

  • @almostfm

    @almostfm

    +MikeDjfr4sh The problem is that closed cockpits provide their own problems. If a car gets upside down, the driver can't get out (and can't be pulled out without first flipping the car back onto it's wheels. In the event of a fire, it's going to take additional time to get the cockpit off and the driver out. I'm not saying it definitely can't work, but we're at the point with car design that just about any added safety features have tradeoffs that have to be weighed. Remember that the part that Wilson hit was put on the car as a safety measure to protect a driver's feet and legs.

    Yea closed cockpits are a little bit more dangerous than open cockpit, if it was upside down than there's no way out and that problem can lead to even more death.

    I now have got question. I have to say I am an european so I dont know about american Single Seater racing. Compared to the f1 Indycar (and how the others are called as I said I dont know much ) seems much deadlier to me. Is this because the cars are that unsafe or is it simply because of the high speeds? or something else?

    Nino Schier the cars are pretty much the same. i would say that the indy car cars are even more safe but the amount of people in a close distance is the "problem"... in f1 you can't have 12 cars crashes excepting the start.. if you crash in f1 the chance to be hit at 300kph is small... here the chance is pretty big
