Industrial Design Fundamentals 02 Ellipses
Фильм және анимация
This is part 2 of my Industrial Design Fundamentals. In this video I'm talking about ellipses. I had to correct myself in the video a couple of times because I kept on saying cylinders instead of ellipses.

I finished your course on artstation, you often mentioned elipses so I searched for your youtube chanel to find the explanation. I am amazed at how well you explained it, the example of the car was really helpfull. I think it would help if you showed pictures and paintings with the perspective lines like you did on the course. Thank you so much!
This was the most concise explaination i've found for Ellipses. I could NEVER understand that "Long Axis is 90 degrees from the Short Axis" until seeing it in this video. Thank you so much lol.

i learned more about perspective from your cart example than i have in years. technical drawing for workshop production does not require that perspective be learned, so this is a wonderful departure for me. and i can even draw a cart, now... which is going to be super useful when the oil runs out and i have to build a real one.

Trying to find information on drawing up project plans is actually how I wound up on these (outstanding) video series here. These videos are amazing. Must be hard to tell newbies not to try and have fun yet and recreate anything on paper without knowledge of the basics and shapes on a 3D space. But it's clearly a necessary step to be competent and open your mind to see the paper as a 3D space with 3D shapes to draw correct proportions.

I think for that axis, if you want to get an ellipse from 90 degree perspective (the right one) you just mark the equal distance up and down on minor axis and the equal distance to the left and right for major axis. If the distances are the same for both axis, you would get a perfect circle.

Thank you so much for providing visual clarification on how to match the minor axis within a square. I've been stumped on why it always seems slightly off in other examples and the small right angle as a visual que is so helpful! I do have a question or perhaps even a request though. Do you have any tips on how to mirror a square from the X to the y plane? More specifically, I draw a square in vertical towards the vanishing point and then I want to map the same square to the ground plane so my proportions match properly when I draw constructions. You see, I've been trying to apply the construction methods to animals and creatures but I manage to turn camels into weasels because my grids are off, haha. Scott Robertson shows a trick on how to achieve that with ellipse guides on page 57 of "How to Draw" but I don't own any sets and I would like to speed up the process by being able to do so freehand. If you do have a video covering something like this, please let me know as I've only just discovered you. Thank you so much for all your work and efforts in explaining these principles!
@robertlkiss

Glad this helped but I was wrong about placing the center of the ellipse into the center of the square, I made a correction video on that so check that out. As for projecting squares not sure if I made a video of it but it is all about measuring(by eye). I think the central axis of the cylinder is only perpendicular to the long axis only in one vanishing point perspective, not in two vanishing points perspective...
@robertlkiss
4 жыл бұрын
In one-point perspective the ellipse is always going to face you so it's natural that the axes are going to be perpendicular on each other. In two-point perspective you use the fact that the long axis is perpendicular to the short axis to be able to construct a correct ellipse.
Thanking you man
