Indonesian National Orchestra - an inside story | with FRANKI RADEN

The Indonesian National Orchestra (INO) is a grouping of indigenous musicians assembled by music ethnologist Franki Raden.
His original presentation was one of Usada Bali’s most memorable talks, and we are very happy to announce his return to our Usada Forum dining theater.
Indonesia proudly boasts the world's first traditional music orchestra. While the Western world has had contemporary orchestras for centuries, the East has given birth to a traditional music orchestra representing the diverse regions of Indonesia. This unique ensemble is known as the Indonesian National Orchestra (INO).
"If the trial of this traditional music orchestra succeeds, we will become the first country in the world to have a national orchestra different from the Western-influenced orchestras that have been prevalent until now," stated the founder of INO, Franki Raden, during a rehearsal at the Sapta Pesona Building of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in Jakarta on May 4, 2010.
The diversity and variety of Indonesian music give it great esthetic depth and a wealth of expression, ensuring that it remains ever-evolving and consistently innovative. "This richness in aesthetic language is the source of the birth of INO, which is ready to compete on the international stage with renowned orchestras worldwide," said Franki, who is a prominent ethnomusicologist and composer.
Franki Raden, who holds a PhD, has drawn from this abundance of resources to pursue his uncompromising work as a contemporary composer, music critic, ethnomusicologist and essayist. He will present elements of his life’s work, in sound and pictures, drawing on his spiritual and musical encounters with the Dayak people of Kalimantan, the Torajans of Sulawesi, the Batak of Sumatra, as well as the world-famous gamelan orchestras of Java and Bali. He also journeys to North America and explores the ways gamelan has influenced Western music.
Born in Jakarta in 1953, Franki Raden has built a career out of his natural curiosity, creating interdisciplinary works that have a ritualistic power. His works are more than mere compositions - they are musical events.
