Indigenous Voice to Parliament is 'just wrong': Tony Abbott

Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott says remote Australia has kids not going to school with adults not working and a Voice to Parliament is “yet another bureaucracy” not going to help the real issues as “it’s just wrong”.
“There are certainly big problems but creating another bureaucracy isn’t going to help,” Mr Abbott told Sky News host Gary Hardgrave.
“This idea that yet another meeting in Canberra, yet another bureaucracy in Canberra is somehow going to get the kids to school, the adults to work and the community safe.
“It’s just wrong.”

It’s been that way for a while the thing is most aboriginal people don’t understand how to take advantage of the privileges that have been given to them. I am part indigenous myself and have worked in a land council in Brisbane in the early 2000’s, most “Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders” were not even aboriginal and only identified. We wasted thousands of dollars on pointless programs etc that never helped anyone. The white aboriginal employees all seemed to buy themselves and their families brand new cars and they owned homes while the ones who actually needed help and were indigenous got nothing

I speak to my grandchildren, and they seem to have their feet on the ground. However, some of their cohort are persuaded by emotion. Even some of my adult family are persuaded by emotion. It's a hard battle with someone who is emotionally motivated to have a fact-based conversation, when their first line of defence is to vote yes so as not to be racist. Ironically, to vote yes is racist!

It's not squandered ... it is a deliberate act to instill victim ology on a whole race of people to keep racism alive for political purposes..... infantilizing a whole segment of our population has robbed them of traditions which western civilizations did not approve of ... eg... how many indigenous people do you now see with tribal scarring... an important tradition and pathway to manhood and recognition of their ancestorial history ... none....why? In aboriginal tradition you could never be a man unless you went through this ceremony.

I look at it this way...would it be reasonable to only recognise australia's anglo-celtic population, based on the fact that they created the nation of australia, brought the native occupants into the modern world and unified them from a mass of kinship tribes into one people, and created the very constitution that we were to amend? On top of that, should they have complete say over who can and cannot go to certain parts of the country? Should every public event, meeting and media broadcast have to include a recognition of that anglo-celtic heritage? I think that might cause a bit of an outcry, but that is exactly what is on the table from Albanese for the aboriginal. On the other hand, I don't know anyone who supports the referendum or the idea of 'the voice'.

  • @CallMeMrX

By 'brought them into the modern world' I assume you meant drag them kicking and screaming into a culture and belief system they had no part of for 50 thousand years. Looking at the state of the Indigenous people today, I can't help but think they were far better off before we stepped in. I'm not saying The Voice will improve their standing, the likelihood is it will just be exploited by politicians for personal gain, but I am saying that as things are, the idea that we are all equal is not looking too strong.
