Other than ‘76, Knight never had the best teams but he won a lot of games bc he was just a better coach than everyone else. It’s just a fact. He took over at at Texas Tech and made them into a tournament team and had them ranked.

Rest in peace coach Bobby Knight. Coach Bobby Knight was, pound for pound, the most gifted college Basketball coach of my lifetime, and this 1984 "N.C.A.A" Basketball tournament exemplified my assessment. The 1984 North Carolina "Tarheels" may have been the best starting lineup in the history of that storied program. Coach Bobby Knight outsmarted another hall of fame coach in Dean Smith and that extraordinary talent coach Dean Smith was blessed to assemble.

I agree 100%. When you look at the talent of these two teams, there was no comparison. North Carolina had Michael Jordan, Kenny Smith, Sam Perkins, and Brad Daugherty, who all went on to have terrific NBA careers! Indiana didn't have any guy off of their team that did anything in the NBA and they beat this Tarheel team?? One of the worst losses of Dean Smith's coaching career. R.I.P. Bobby Knight who went on to coach the USA Olympic team to the gold medal in 1984. He coached Michael Jordan on that team and called him the best player he'd ever seen!

Before the NBA draft, which took place a few months after this game, Bob Knight begged Portland's GM to draft Jordan over Bowie. Portland's GM said something like "Jordan's great, but we really need a center." To which Knight replied, "Then play Jordan at center!"

There's an old saying: "You play for the name on the front of the jersey; not the name on the back of the jersey." It's interesting that Indiana has no name on the back of their jersey... Personally, I'm not prepared to say this North Carolina team could or would beat the Hoosiers in a 7 game series. It seems to me that the better team won.

Dean Smith outcoached himself. He liked to rely on his bench, even when he didn't need to. He had two All-Americans, in Jordan & Perkins & only fed one. Knight had a good game plan to sit back in the key in a zone but as Jordan showed in the final 5 minutes, he was the best player in the country. Smith didn't run the ball through him, for whatever reason. It was a much different game back then, with no 3 pt shot or shot clock, which lead to other huge upsets such as NC State vs Houston in '83 & Villanova vs Georgetown in '85.

This game right here is why Bobby Knight is the greatest college basketball coach of all time. That UNC roster had nothing but high school All Americans on it. Four players on that team were (or eventually became) college All Americans. I believe seven players on that team eventually went to the League. On the other hand, not one of those Midwestern farmboys on the Indiana team (except for the German stiff) even sniffed the NBA and the only player the average basketball fan can recognize is a FRESHMAN Steve Alford. This is Bobby Knight’s coaching masterpiece.

This is what puzzles me. I thought that the shot clock was instituted in the 70's due to the Phil Ford and Carolina 4 corners offense. This clearly gives the weaker team the advantage, especially if they get the lead. they can simply hold the ball and force the other team to wear themselves out chasing the ball, and only take easy shots when they are availible. And Indiana was clearly playing the stall in the 2nd half. The most important event of the game is early in the first half when Jordan and Blab went up for the ball, which Jordan clearly gained control of as he collided with Blab in mid air, and the foul was called on Jordan for some reason although he was the one with clear possession. This gave him 2 early fouls and he only played 8 minutes of the 1rst half. Which allowed Indiana to get the lead and play keep away. If anything, the foul should have been called on Blab, which would have left Jordan in the game a stuck Blab with his 2nd foul early. And the game would have been a lot different.

...... NC's lineup of Jordan, Sam Perkins, Brad Daugherty and Kenny Smith looked overpowering but freshman Smith was ineffective with broken wrist, Jordan had foul trouble, soph Daugherty suffered in-game hand injury. NC shot horribly (under 35%) Indiana shot lights out for the game (almost 65%), IU matched up well, got great games from Steve Alford & 7-2 center Blab. They also played great team D & ran efficient offense. Kinda like when "little" Princeton almost knocked off Alonzo Mourning & (No. 1 seed) Georgetown in 1993. It can always happen, as No. 16 UBMC proved vs. No. 1 Virginia in 2018. Knight and Dean Smith ? All great coaches stumbled multiple times in early rounds of the NCAAs or before they even got to the NCAA tournament. IU in first round to Richmond, etc. ... it's interesting... Dean Smith, Bob Knight, John Wooden and Mike Krzyzewski all played for great coaches (Phog Allen, Fred Taylor, Ward Lambert, Bob Knight). Jim Calhoun (3 NCAA titles, almost 900 wins) did not (Bill Callahan, Am.Int. College D. II) and Calhoun was never an assistant coach. Wooden (Purdue 1932) and Knight (Ohio State 1960) and Dean (1952 Kansas) all played for NCAA champs. Wooden (12.1 ppg) was the "better" college player -- "Player of the Year" in 1932 and Purdue was named "national champs" by the Helms Ath. Foundation & Premo-Poretta Poll -- two separate org. that retroactively gave out awards to basketball teams, players from late 1890s through 1938 before NCAA began in 1939. Smith, Knight and Krzyzewski (at Army) were all average Division I college players in college (2 ppg to 7 ppg) who learned well from their head coaches and, with Wooden, all went on to teach the game extremely well and successfully, all becoming the winningest coach of all time when each retired (except coach K). That is remarkable... and begets the winners become bigger winners theory in life. Yet, Calhoun, a Div. II All-American player at Amer.International College played under just a .500 level coach (Bill Callahan). He never was an assistant. Also interesting, four were born in the midwest: Wooden (Indiana), Smith (Kansas), Knight (Ohio) and Krzyzewski (Illinois). Calhoun (Massachusetts). Yes Wooden has 10 NCAA titles, Krzyzewski 5, Knight 3, Calhoun 3 and Smith 2... After reading about each... I believe you can make a case for each as the greatest coach(es) since 1960. Smith, Knight, Calhoun & Krzyzewski all coached in the Mideast or East -- where, objectively, in their eras, there was much stronger competition to get to the Final Four than in the West. Remember, too... Only conference champs could compete for NCAA titles thru almost all of Wooden's era (1947-1975) while Smith, Knight, Coach K and Calhoun all had to battle talented at-large berth national powerhouse teams hungry for redemption in every round in the East. And each had to win 5 or 6 games to become national champs. During Wooden's era, you only had to win 4 games against half western universities to claim a crown (less teams were invited, bracket was NOT balanced yet by NCAA). What Wooden's UCLA teams were able to do was remarkable -- 10 titles in 12 years -- the result of great coaching fundamentals from Wooden, great defensive strategies (2-2-1 press, diamond & 1, etc.) from the best assistant coach ever in Jerry Norman (who recruited Walt Hazzard, Gail Goodrich, Lew Alcindor, Lucius Allen, Sidney Wicks & Curtis Rowe to name a few), PLUS the recruiting help of famous black UCLA alumni like Jackie Robinson (Baseball's breaker of the color barrier), Ralph Bunche (U.S. United Nations rep), Willie Naulls (NBA veteran), Arthur Ashe (U.S. Open champ), and Rafer Johnson (Olympic Decathlon champ) all helped draw some of the nation's BEST basketball players to the West Coast & UCLA. Whoever got Lew Alcindor & Bill Walton was going to the Final Four every year, just like Bill Russell & Wilt Chamberlain took their teams to the NCAA Final in their college days. Alcindor (for race appeal reasons) and Walton (local boy) WANTED to come to UCLA. I consider Alcindor & Walton to be the two most complete college players of all time. With Pete Maravich at point guard & Oscar Robertson at the other guard, I would round out my all-time college team with Chamberlain & Russell as my 5th starter, 1st sub. Wooden, most successful... sure, hands down. Yet, all his early great black players (Naulls, Walt Hazzard, Lew Alcindor, Lucius Allen, etc.) all considered quitting the team after their sophomore years ("A Coach's Life" by Seth Davis, 2014 copyright) there as the on-campus culture (ex. no dorms for blacks) or Wooden's non-communication, detached off-court persona, and not explaining why you would be benched, stressed them all out to the max. UCLA booster/friend Sam Gilbert stepped in with hospitality at his house & elsewhere to save the day for UCLA fans with Hazzard, Alcindor & Allen, according to Davis' book. Wooden communicated the Xs and Os of hoops tremendously in practice... according to his players, he was below average at relating to them as people while they were there. Calhoun's and Smith's players had a much more positive experience with them....same with Krzyzewski's guys. Knight's? More of a mixed bag of memories, like Wooden's. According to his book, Wooden did not talk to you much if you were not in his top 7 player rotation. And he gave his top players more leeway when it came to breaking team rules, curfews, etc. "Greatest coach" ever then? Tough call to make. Most enjoyable "great coach" to play for ? For life lessons, success & relatability... I go with Dean Smith or Jim Calhoun. Though playing with Bill Walton probably would have been a lot of fun... Keep ballin' all you hoopers !

The three-point shot did help space out the floor though its taken over too much of the game today, I think One reason Dean Smith's 4-corner stall offense was so successful was it was the one offense that really spaced out the floor. They often got layups out of it if they ran it long enough.
