I've said it once, I'll say it a thousand times, what they should have done for Indy 4 is a big-screen version of The Fate of Atlantis video game. It was a great story and I'm sure Spielberg and co could have worked the plot into something suitable for a 2 hour movie

Actually - Dial took some of stuff from Atlantis - the comic book, especially. the underwater scene (diver underwater sees the second boat approaching, air hose gets cut off - this was in the game, too). Artifact hidden on the shelves. Indy gets shot in the same place like in the comic, he's even wearing a similar pyjama while recuperating. And the fake name Schmidt is German version of Smith.

I liked 'Dial' more than Skull. It repeated some things from 'Kingdom' (warehouse with a hidden artifact, young person connected to Indy shows up tracked by an agent, sitting with Indy in a bar, showing a picture. There's even a protest, a banner, and later a chasing car is blocked by a narrow passage), but 'Dial' used these tropes in a more down-to-Earth, believable way. I needed some time to start to enjoy 'Kingdom' - I didn't like the blurry image, the over-the-top scale and main elements basically repeated from Indy3 (letter instead of the diary, Indy trying to save Mac just like Elsa - he even uses a similar line - btw, many lines from the 3rd appear here; the clue brings them to the tomb of the last person who looked for Grail/Akator. In Oxley's cell he goes up to see the pattern on the floor, just like the 'X marks the spot'. In the corridors under the cemetary (great location!) the shot of wind blowing through the webs was exactly like the first trap in 'Crusade'. it ends with a huge cavalcade of vehicles going to the final location. When villains join them in that final chamber, Indy made the same grimace like in Indy3 - very similar shot). I didn't have that problem with 'Dial' - I enjoyed it immediately. The prologue was obviously one big love letter to Indy3, but the rest was really fun. Having read all the bad predictions, I was prepared for sth terrible, but instead - I loved it. The underwater stuff (inspired by the Fate of Atlantis), horse riding during the parade - that's classic Indy, and it's less crazy than the fridge of lifeboat falling from the plane and later from the cliff. And the fact that there really is an Antykithera mechanism is a cherry on top. One big mistake - why were there no date tags like before? 'New York 1969', for instance - that's essential for these movies. And sure it had problems - too many chaotic fights, repeated scenes. But it was good. I bought the DVD and've watched it several times already.

I finally decided to watch this film last week, having boycotted it since release. I enjoyed it more than Crystal Skull, which was a shocker. It felt very artificial to me though. Like it was put together in a lab or something. My favourite character (get this) was Helena! I know, I'm baffled and really have to watch the film again before I understand that. Your points all seem very valid. The first time I watch a film though I don't analyse it, I experience it, feel it. If the film is enjoyable enough to rewatch, then I'll analyse it. Did I enjoy Dial of Destiny enough to rewatch though...? I'm kind of on the fence there. I did see Crystal Skull 6 times before I decided I hated it though, so I should factor that into my thinking.

The only reason I watched it was it came out on Disney+, and I get that for free through my cell phone provider. Otherwise, I would not have paid to see it. I was, however, surprised that it was better than I thought it would be. But I don't have the desire to rewatch, though, b/c it lacks that "rewatchable" factor the first three have. Especially Raiders.

No, that was the fourth film. We did NOT need to return to the world of Indiana Jones. His story was concluded for all time - via Last Crusade or whether you accept the storyline of the TV series or not - and there was absolutely no reason to do two decades-after-the-fact sequels. Besides, Lucas and Spielberg were utterly uninvolved in Dial of Destiny anyway! And, IF you accept the TV series continuity, shouldn't Indy be sporting an eyepatch and resembling John Ford by now?

I don’t understand how anyone could say that Dial of Destiny was better than Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. At least in Crystal Skull, we got to see Indy still doing action scenes and throwing some serious punches, even if they made him come across more like a superhero. And he is the actual main character of the movie. He doesn’t get sidelined or treated like trash for the majority of the movie by new unlikable characters. And he gets a deserved happy ending with Marion and Mutt. And as for “woke”, when most people say it, they mean that clearly Disney created a character like Helena who’s clearly supposed to replace Indy because only “strong and capable” female characters are better than Indy because he’s just an old, white man. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull feels more like an Indiana Jones than this piece of crap!!

You not only don’t understand the movie, but clearly not old enough to understand life. This was one of the best Indy’s of all time. The story was both strong and right in harmony with the Indy’s before. Yes we would all love for Indy to live forever as he was in Raiders, but did get a grip, life changes, people change and we move on. Seeing an aged Indy was a hard reality because guess what? Harrison IS OLD. No one destroyed Indy. It was well directed, and well executed, and touted the best de-aging to date! To the People who spout out how Indy 5 was destroyed, I wonder, what have you ever done? What movie have you ever directed? What stories have you ever written? Hmm, I don’t see your name rolling across any credits of, well, anything. Oh but your got at least 7 subscribers to your KZread channel. Wow yer killing it.

@scottvillalobos8453, I agree to 90% of your comment. The story is WAY better than Indy 4, but Indy 3 with Sean Connery is really hard to beat. I've enjoyed watching the movie overall. Though, the killing of a lot of characters was sometimes a bit unnecessary. Leaving Indy to his near death in the hand of the CIA at the beginning was a stupid out of character decision. It's not perfect, but it's an entertaining movie. Harrison Ford is not 30 anymore, neither his character, and that's ok. It's interesting to see where a hero bigger than nature can go, near the end of his life. I am totally agree with you @scottvillalobos8453, "clearly not old enough to understand life" (I don't pretend to understand it either :-D but like Harrison Ford always says... "It's a MOVIE"). In this movie, Indy does the best he can, and then accept that it's ok to survive the death of the one who you thought would carry on your legacy and live his own life. The world/artifacts can be save by someone else. Getting old is sometimes no longer being able to do what you used to, but also do other things that you never thought you could. Your vision of life is different, the vision of who you're becoming is different, and... it's ok. My dear @Bryce Spencer, I hope that you'll go through those new pages of your future life one day and watch back, years from now, this review and compare your accomplishments to those of Indiana Jones. Every decade will be a new challenge, a new chapter, and frankly, I was happy to see an OCTOGENARIAN having so much fun, once again, on our BIG screen in a not so bad movie. Nothing has been ruined, certainly not the Indiana Jones icon . :-) By the way... I'm 53, full shape. Not that old yet! ;-)

You are so wrong about this movie and what the people making it were trying to do. The film makers were trying to replace indy with helen. The wanted to destroy indy so you would not mind if helen replaced him. This is standard operating practice of Disney and race/gender swappers in general. I can cite example after example. Thor becoming a drunk for the gender swap of thor. Luke skywalker for rey. James Bond for new black women 007. The old character must be destroyed so you do not care when they are replaced. You can depict the limitations of age without destroying people. Sean Connery in crusade is a great example of this, one Indy 5 should have followed.

@@jrpanciotti8863, even if that was the case, I don't really care, because Harrison Ford is irreplaceable, and I think that there is a soul who loves this legendary actor who doesn't know it. So who CARES, really. I went to see a movie knowing that it was, for sure, the last Ford/Indiana Jones movie, a farewell movie. That was obvious and not a surprise at all, and that's exactly what we got. I don't know what you were expecting. Maybe re-watching Indiana Jones Kingdom of the Crystal Skull might bring you peace and comfort? ;-) As for the big conspiracy of Disney that you're accusing them of doing... how many of those movies succeeded in the last 5 years? Have no fear, mister, money talks at Hollywood. Always did, always will. And by the way, there is a story behind Sean Connery being in the 3rd installment. Spielberg always wanted to do a James Band movie, and never had the ok to do it, so, he created is own James Bond with whom as his father? :-D Now... watch INDIANA JONES LAST CRUSADE again with that in mind. It's hilarious. That's why I think, the 3rd one is the best of all the 5 movies, by far!

I didn't have high expectations because I hate the Star Wars sequel trilogy and I was disappointed by Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but I honestly was surprised by Dial of Destiny . It wasn't a masterpiece, but it was better than the fourth and a good sendoff for the character. Most people in the comments just want to hate on everything Disney does by screaming "WOKE! WOKE!
