Indian school whisperer: Dave Archambault, Sr. at TEDxBurnsvilleED

Dave Archambault, Sr., Lakota Patriot
Born on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, Dave Leon Archambault has received the Lakota name Itazipo Wakinyan/Thunder Bow. He holds a masters degree in education administration from Penn State. He has worked as an educator, administrator and consultant at Indian schools and tribal colleges throughout his career. Archambault believes existing and past schooling policies of the U.S. government are effectively genocide, wasting the customs and beliefs of First Americans.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I love how he connects the sacred to education. It starts when he describes how the Lakota connected movement to the Divine, to life. The movement trope continues with the discussion about the movement of his dogs on open landscapes shape their temperament. The use of the movement trope culminates with his observations of the movement of the intellect and the spirit that happens through these whispering pedagogies, such as Montessori and Project Based learning, where students can allow their brain and spirit to expand and move without the fear of the narrowing that happens when you impose an accountability paradigm based on efficiency models. I like his emphasis on healing pedagogies, pedagogies that reclaim and revitalize the sacred. Thank you Dave Archambault!

I'm a French Canadian and lost a war with the English in the past. However, i don't feel oppressed today, i embrace western lifestyle, politics, art, sciences. Europeans were once all indigenous people, the shaman's on acid recounting their astral spiritual trips to the tribes. However, life is much better now, so could you please integrate with western cultures like all the foreign immigrants are doing. Just look at all these new immigrants in American big cities, they all happy, working, educating their children. Thats the proof that we are doing a good job with Politics, Arts, Sciences, Healthcare...

I believe creative teaching should be the only way to teach. There are so many out there that would benefit from creative teaching .We were not ment to be Corralled like halves and pointed the same direction. We were meant to be individuals ,are spirits have so much to teach each other. I wish to see in the future a world where we all love ourselves 1st so we can all love each other..

Maria Montessori was a true genius and there are Much better ways of teaching, controlled grading systems are not producing great individuals..Thank you Dave Archambault. "We teachers can only help the work going on, as servants wait upon a master. We then become witnesses to the development of the human soul; the emergence of the New Man who will no longer be the victim of events but, thanks to his clarity of vision, will become able to direct and to mold the future of mankind" Maria Montessori

I believe one of your ancestors, Joseph Archambault, was at Virginia, Hampton Institute with my Great Grandmother, Josephine McCarthy, who became Josephine Waggoner. I remembered his name in her book, Witness: a Hunkpapha Historian’s Strong-Heart Song of the Lakotas. I come from Daphne Waggoner, Stanley Quay. I am 10% via DNA Lakota Sioux, from my father, and my mother, who was also Lakota Sioux. Have a very spiritual, paranormal connection to my Grandma Josephine, a woman I never knew about because of forced adoption, and yet spent my childhood running around telling people my name was Josephine and I was Indian (that’s what they said back then) and Irish. You may take that however you wish. I found my 1/2 siblings via DNA and was welcomed with open arms. PS: your talk of Montessori: went as a preschool child in Washington State 🤗

Obviously our society does not seem to be benefitting from the current systems. This competition for greed is 😥. Back to basics , elementary skills need to be refreshed.

This is fascinating and I sure hope this is the direction that we are headed in as a nation and a world... because right now, schools (ESPECIALLY IN POORER NEIGHBORHOODS!) are simply a means of perpetuating the social hierarchy and there essentially to keep the poor poor and the wealthy wealthy. Poor schools stress being on time and following directions simply because the system needs to train another generation of workers. That’s all it basically is.

The Indigenous people of the Americas are thousands of years older than previously thought. The Hopi history is written down in the eBook: "The History of the Hopi from their origin on Lemuria". They say that they are at least 30,000 years old and are the ancestors of the Maya. Also interesting is: "Ancient Navajo Knowledge Revealed".To learn more about the cycle of natural disasters and civilizations, read the eBook: "Planet 9 = Nibiru". Search for: invisible nibiru 9. You can read it nicely on any computer, tablet or Smartphone.

You see that native people from the North American to Aborigines to Native Hawaiians and so on…. these people receive very little attention in media and little help economically.. often times still oppressed in many ways to this day. I think it’s because ‘the powers that be’ that want to control/direct man’s path into the future, can see that connection of these native people to the land is unwavering… they cannot change the values of these people to put money higher than their soul bond with Mother Earth.

I'm halfway through. I think it's the struggle with discipline. Not all parents discipline. Some not at all. Some too much. Children need to be disciplined to be educated, to focus on study. To sit still long enough to learn. To care to learn. Self direction is great, as long as the child does not disrupt the entire room with their antics. I've seen a wild child. Native children originally learned very young to be quiet, to listen. Their safety required good behavior. This has been lost. Children not properly parented in the first years...parenting by day care is not the same.

You may not believe me, but in ethnical republics and territories in Russia most children study at least the prevailing native language, even if they're ethnical Russians. It's not surprising to meet a white person who speaks, for example, Sakha (Yakutian) language quite well, just because he/she studied it at school somewhere in Zhatay in Yakutia. What's the problem to include classes in a local language into the education standards? If it was common in the 'agressive' USSR and is common in 'dangerous' Russia, why can't it become normal in the free US? If local TV, radio, newspapers, music and film industry are financially supported by the local and federal governments in 'dangerous' Russia, they can be even better supported in developed countries like the US or Canada.
