+John McCarron That's kind of sad actually. In India, women think hitting men like that is normal. Lots of white knights there.

+Kencka fk ...just to be clear, I'm absolutely certain we the women of India have not elected you to be our representative to the world. If you happen to be an Indian woman who thinks that way, then I hope you will speak only for yourself the next time you feel the urge to educate people via KZread comments. If you're not an Indian woman, then *insert factually incorrect (and frankly, offensive) sweeping generalisation of every single person who shares your nationality and gender.*

I worked with a lot of Indian Graduate Students. One day we had 5 guys waiting in chairs in the lobby. Receptionist asks "Who was next?" - the first guy turns to the guy on his left and bobbles, the next guy turns to his left and bobbles. so on and so forth, each one trying to defer to the guy next to him. It happened so fast, it was like they choreographed it. Hilarious.

This was so important for a regular white american guy like me to learn when I worked with engineers from India. I figured it out on my own while working at Intel many years ago. Indian engineers are some of the smartest, and definitely the friendliest engineers I've ever worked with. A number of them are my good friends now.

Some years ago when we were at a restaurant, I asked my 6-year-old son to ask an Indian at the next table whether we can borrow a vacant chair from his table. The Indian "uncle" smiled and gave him the Indian head shake. My son came back to our table and said to me that the uncle said,"No". As a general rule, a yes head-shake is accompanied by a friendly smile.

I have not seen "Caucasian's" do the bobble and I doubt many could. People are different. This is a good thing. It's the angry people of this world that I have issue with and they can be found anywhere. Have fun being angry, feel free to get the last word in, I will go bake cookies.

I was an American "expat" for four years in India, over 40 years ago. Loved the video -- but just have to make one further comment. Some lower level GOI officials in Delhi would do the ''No" shake (as in the video) when they actually meant "I agree". I had cracked this code, but sat in a meeting with another expat who was unaware. The scenario was hilarious -- lack of communication obvious but this was serious business and I couldn't laugh then. I held it in until I made it back to the car, and then I howled !!!

Great Video. 2 comments: 1. there is a subtle difference between the up-down 'yes' and sideways 'yes'. up-down shake is factual 'yes' as in 'Is New Delhi Capital of India?'. The sideways 'yes' shake is best described as agree 'ok' as in 'Shall we continue this tomorrow?'. 2. The maybe shake has be slow with a bit of rolling the eyes and/or furrowing of brows to mean 'maybe' or it could be mistaken for 'ok' !

Its like if someone is doing something silly/doing something they dont want others to see, and you see it yet let them continue.. thats when that headbob comes into action! Lol.. It says I saw you mate, but carry on. I won't be interfering. So basically a tease. And here the guy and girl were flirting n the other guy just teased them.

You learn something new everyday! I had no idea that this behavior was so ingrained in the culture. Here in America there are many Indian doctors so when I see my doctor I will try to notice his/her head movements. It may help me determine if they are being honest or dishonest :)

PulseCode Music omg Shantaram is exactly what I was thinking of as I watched this! As fantastic as the video is, I got the impression from Shantaram that the head shake he spoke of was more to signify pleasure/sincerity/enjoyment rather than yes/no/maybe. Any thoughts?

I work at a dental office and there was this one lady that would wobble her head a lot. We would work on her and every few minutes ask her( like we usually to everyone) if she was ok . She would wobble her head and the dentist would stop Everytime thinking she was in pain. Just for her to say " yes I'm ok". My curiosity made me check this out. Thanks for the video.

Meenfriedchickencurry If there are so many meanings one has to interpret what your head wobble means then its a fucking waste of time and energy and you'll soon be due for chiropractic treatment from unnecessary twitching which will lead to Parkinson's disease. So cease this farcical behavior and just either say yes or no with minimal amount of physical effort to convey your message to preserve your energy for better things.

Amazing... I always get confused here, after living outside India for 38 years (I'm 40), I seriously don't know how things work. They have a weird way of asking if you want to take away food, they would ask you, you wanna eat it? If you say yes it means you'll eat it here, if you say no I don't want to eat it, it means take away.
