India’s Harnaaz Sandhu is Miss Universe 2021! My Post-Pageant Thoughts TPN#36

Ойын-сауық

We have a new Miss Universe! Congratulations to Harnaaz Sandhu of India, her country’s third Miss Universe and first in 21 years. Incredible performances by so many delegates, including 1st runner-up Nadia Ferreira of Paraguay and 2nd runner-up Lalela Mswane of South Africa.
We also saw the first-ever placement by The Bahamas, and first placements in many years by Aruba and Singapore.
After sitting down to watch the pageant I recorded some immediate thoughts on the pageant and the results. I’ll have a proper, in-depth analysis video coming soon, but please enjoy these initial “post-pageant thoughts” from the comfort of my living room!

Hey Pageant Nerd! Congrats on picking the right winner! As an Indian, it was so THRILLING to watch a win after 21 long years (I've watched 1994, 2000 and 2021 live). When Harnaaz (for the final Q) paused and reflected on the question for a moment, I was like-- yes! That's exactly how Sushmita did it in 1994. Listen, think, and answer, and glad she did so in the final round.

Beatrice destroyed naysayers and bashers with her solid Top 5 placement. France has it going until she changed her hairstyle. It seemed as though she was trying to play down her exoticness.I would’ve loved for her keep the same hairstyle as was in the prelims. I was rooting for Paraguay since she was crowned. But the moment I saw Harnaaz in the line up of Miss Diva, I said to myself she’s the one to bring India’s glory days in Miss Universe. She just looks so divine. Her beauty is a cross between India’s two Miss World (back to back) winners, Yuktha Mookey and Priyanka Chopra. It was so refreshing to see some countries break through the semis. Israel as a host delivered very very well. There’s so much culture and the best stage since 2018. The show was well produced and could’ve been perfect if only they got another host who doesn’t make everything about him.

(Lol) I agree with a lot of your sentiments that you shared with us, especially with Miss Universe-Belgium 2021 (She’s so beautiful OMG), Miss Universe-Chile 2021, Miss Universe-Spain 2021, Miss Universe-Namibia 2021 and Miss Universe-Mexico 2021 not being selected for the Top 16... 😔 I’d also include Miss Universe-Argentina 2021 (Absolutely _STUNNING_ National Costume, with a commendable backstory on its use of materials) and Miss Universe-Peru 2021 not being chosen as surprising as well. (I truly hope they extend the number of finalists back to a Top 21 or even more, selecting only 16 candidates is so ruthless out of a sea of so many accomplished and qualified women. ✊🏾) But I agree, it was really endearing seeing contestants who do not normally advance as semi-finalists share their genuine and earnest reactions, such as Miss Universe-Singapore 2021, Miss Universe-The Bahamas 2021, and especially Miss Universe-Aruba 2021! It shows me that exceptional delegates who are also inspiring, capable and admirable human-beings are also being fairly recognised in this prestigious arena. 😊☀️ _P.S So glad you’re showing yourself at the forefront of your videos, you’re more handsome than I imagined. 😍😝_ _P.P.S Did you see Miss Universe-Portugal 2021 at the very left of the stage whip out her phone momentarily right before Steve Harvey announced Miss Universe 2021 Harnaaz Sandhu as the winner?!?!?_ 🤭🔍🧐

What I saw in this edition were 1. Good background score during preliminary round. 2. Large stage and less slippery ramp is surely helpful for girls. 3. One piece swimsuit were wore by majority of girl which is commendable. 4. Again all women judges panel which is very disappointing. Include male judge it will not decrease the glory of women empowerment. 5. Singapore, Bahamas and Aruba were surprise entries and good surprise. 6. Steve Harvey was more poised compared to previous editions. His jokes were tolerable. 7. But India's introduction question was out of the box. Many are cursing MUO for this. But I thought its her talent and it is the best stage to showcase your talent. So why not to meow on stage. It was showing her confidence and sporting spirit. Bang on Harnaaz. Trust me you won half of the contest right then. 8. What was wrong with Puerto Rico during evening gown performence? I know she was heavy favourite but why she was giving weird looks and weird walks it was too much slow. She was trying to be sexy but it was annoying her expression was like porn actress . sorry to say such kind of expression killed her opportunity to proceed further. 9. Top 5 qand a was good and the standard of questions were not up to the mark but they were ok. 10. I don't know how Paraguay proceed to top 3. Her answers were very very cliche and she did not properly answer the questions. I guess her previous scores help her to proceed. 11. Final question was excellent. And India's response was bullets eye. South Africa 's answer was good but she was confused during presentation. Again Paraguay gave the weakest answer. But somehow managed to be the first runner up. 12. Last but not the least Harnaaz .. You were destined to win .. Congrats and have a strong reign and left a remarkable legacy.

Hi Einra - thanks for you honest feedback! To be honest, I’d prefer to not be visible in my videos, but it seemed there was a fair bit of interest in seeing me and at the same time creating those types of clips takes MUCH less time. But rest assured that I also prefer to do the more in-depth, documentary-style videos. I’ll most likely do a combination of both, but don’t worry - I’ll definitely be doing my usual programming again soon! It was just necessary to produce more videos quickly in the lead-up to Miss Universe. Thanks for your support! ❤️

Good morning to you TPN and your fans across the world. Not going to do my usual blathering on. A few key points from this old man - thrilled for Bahamas, Singapore, Aruba, Japan, and Great Britan. How exciting to see these countries place! It was awesome. Heartbroken for Thailand as Annchilee was one of my personal favorites so not going to lie shed a small tear. So let me just be honest and say I was shocked and disappointed that USA did not move on. I truly believed that she was deserving of that spot - actually I cried I was so proud of her but never-the-less. I was thrilled for Philippines another personal and sentimental favorite of mine - go Bea - she was awesome. Miss India the new Miss Universe is clearly deserving, and I am thrilled for her crown but of course your heart does break for Miss Paraguay and Miss South Africa. Stay well everyone and stay safe. Sending love and friendship - Joseph from the USA

When the organization announced it was a top 16 we all knew that 5 of our favorites would not make it into the semis. For me those 5 are Spain, Belgium, Chile, Namibia and DRepublic. It's so sad that women who have been working hard on the training and have been preparing for this competition were left out. Congrats to those girls that surprisingly were classified such as Aruba, Japan, Singapore and Great Britain, they all deserve it. But I think it would have been More fair a top 21.

It was a thriller! I hope you further expound on the remarkable journey SA went through - it was quite a rollercoaster. In particular, the political dilemma and humiliation she had to endure. How will her well deserved and spectacular placement be handled by her government who disowned her. Also, the power of the fan vote. I see a parallel between her and Miss U Philippines 2013. Having been given a lifeline from the fans, she was afforded a second chance to shine though not initially penetrating the top 15. Your thoughts.

Belgium’s interview was said to have touched judges hearts and some even cried. Idk what happened for her to be excluded. I loved the production and stage and all, but disappointed by how fast each SS and EG segment was. Like, everyone has to run to make it to pose at the end. Music choices are still weird and the background music for top16-10-5 I didn’t like. I am very sad for the El Tocuyo awardees especially Spain because she is absolutely beautiful inside and out as well as Chile. On the other hand, very happy for the surprise placers. Personally I wanted to see Vietnam and Japan in top 10; Japan was glowing during the finals. She’s the best (and English) speaker that we have ever sent. Love her presence. I hope MUO will be like this every year to encourage all delegates to do absolute best.

I have a NERDY observation appropriate for this space. What is SO STRIKING about Harnaaz Sandhu's Miss Universe triumph is that it marks the coming of age of a NEW GENERATION of Miss India's. Remember the Miss India's of the glorious 1990s? Sushmita Sen, Aishwarya Rai, Gul Panag, Lara Datta, Priyanka Chopra, and the whole lot? Well, they came from broadly similar social backgrounds. Anyone who studies sociology knows that SOCIAL CLASS is not just about the resources and money one has, but that money also translates into resources spent into cultivating and CONSUMING 'HIGH' TASTE in culture from childhood (from learning music, dance classes, learning foreign languages, learning socially approved accents, imbibing an easy manner of presentation in dress and speech etc.). These older Miss India's hailed from urban upper middle class families, were educated in English schools, and many of them came from military/Army families (and if not military then bureaucrat and corporate family backgrounds). So class background + upper caste background + military background meant that these were well educated, worldly, confident, and articulate individuals. And India had just opened up to the world economy in 1991 with major economic reforms, so beauty pageants were a vehicle for them to launch into other careers (though most of them disappointingly went into FILM careers with the exception of the awesome and smart Gul Panag who turned into an opposition politician). But after 2000 I recall noticing a MAJOR SHIFT in the Miss India contests. And this was part of a wider social shift sweeping across India (I could see this shift in the backgrounds of India's cricket team too!). Economic growth + the expansion of the middle class led to many women of the traditional Miss India backgrounds moving into more professional careers (plus we won so many pageants so quickly that beauty pageants became a joke). AND SMALL TOWN INDIA BEGAN TO ENTER the cultural mainstream. The contestants spoke in dialect English and also broken English, they came from lesser know and even unheard of towns, and they didn't have any of the "grooming" that upper middle urban families invest so much on. So it was always an uphill struggle and it really showed in the MU dry run through the 2000s and 2010s (keeping aside some exceptions). Harnaaz's social biography is situated in this space. Check out her Miss Panjab and Femina Miss India videos from 2018 and 2019. This is a Chandigarh Punjabi girl with roots in the small town. Her family seems to be solidly provincial and modestly middle class, with few of the social facets of the upwardly mobile city based Indian middle class. THIS IS WHY HARNAAZ'S STORY IS SO AWESOME. If you see her old videos from 2018-19, she carries the marks of this different social background. She is clearly struggling with conveying her thoughts in English and the accent is awkward (in fact often a pseudo American accent makes an appearance). WHAT AMAZES me seeing her old videos is just how much SHE HAS CHANGED. And by this I do not mean changed to imitate upper class habits and styles. Instead, she has worked hard and absorbed the world around her like a sponge. She has cultivated HER OWN STYLE of speaking which does not require a Westernized accent (like some other Indian queens) but is authentic to her own voice. She sometimes struggles with English but she can still put her point of view across (and hey! she should never feel less of this because English is not her first language! Be like the French please, speak more Punjabi haha !) . And she carries herself with such easy grace and charm, it's a delight to watch. My point is that Harnaaz's MU triumph is an exceptional moment because here is a beauty queen who had none of the inherited class advantages of the Miss India's of old, and here is someone who clearly worked hard and with humility to improve upon herself, to grow, and to be a version of herself that she wanted to be. Personally, I find this learning process inspiring. I can't even begin to imagine just how much Harnaaz will GROW and evolve over the coming year as Miss Universe. She is a natural and I am so excited to follow her journey. My one only concern is that Harnaaz is going to live in the US which is itself in the middle of all kinds of big culture wars. And these are important wars (on race, class, caste, etc) where one should have a well thought out, consistent and articulate stance. I just hope MU Org will give her some guidance on how to navigate the American cultural landscape with knowledge and skill. Three cheers to this awesome new Miss India and Miss Universe! SUPER NERDY SUPER LONG COMMENT ENDS>

This felt like someone was writing down as I dictated my thoughts out. I really think this is also a great opportunity to point out that being global now is not about working up to a homogenous culture, but acknowledging and respecting each and every world view out there. Her "Indianness" is what makes her exceptionally attractive.

Hi Roger! Again thank you so much for your content and your support and the detailed research and facts etc! Really appreciate them! I’d like to get your point of view on those contestants with multi-nationalities who would compete in the Miss USA system (either in their local state or nationally) and then switch to another country and hoping to win and then go on to compete in Miss Universe or other global pageants). We have seen such in Miss Panama 2021 (used to compete in Miss Teen USA and Miss USA in local state), Miss Puerto Rico 2019 (didn’t she compete in Miss Florida USA? ), a former Miss Grand International winner used to compete in Miss Rhode Island USA etc? Do you think this is an approach that should be encouraged? Thanks!
