Muscles, dark features, facial hair… Is it OK for pageants to have a ‘type’? TPN#63

The propensity for contestants from particular countries or regions, or for people with certain physical attributes, to perform better than others would appear to be the case in most, if not all, international competitions.
This was brought to light recently with the crowning of Iván Álvarez of Spain as Mister Supranational 2023, continuing a pattern of muscled, olive-skinned and bearded men that have won the title.
It reignited discussion about the tendency for pageants to have a ‘type’, and indeed whether or not this is fair. Check out my video which addresses this very topic!

I've always noticed that most Mister Supra winners are Western men with full beard. I wish they can crown another race in the next edition and be more diverse. Whereas in Miss Supra, it's more diverse since they have Asian, Latina, European and African winners in the past. I hope their male counterpart which is the Mister Supra can do the same 🙂

Admit it, it is very visible obvious answer. western ♂ are the one you look to. In lighter note, male pageants are not taken seriously, I even thought the most bored candidate Mr. greece are going to be winner in mr. suprantional just because he's tall, has appealing beard, body hair and muscular. The male division needs to be marketed in meaningful way to be more mainstream just like the female counterpart.

I've always wondered how do the straight male juries in women's pageants (as well as straight women and gay men juries in male pageants) in the different pageants balance out trying to find out who throughout the process and/or in the night of the main competition is the right person for the title while not getting tempted to favour the men/women they would personally be most attracted to.

The Pageant Nerd, I think you should make a video if which is the best male beauty contest. Its still not clear the rank of the big 4 in male pageantry. Mr International and Mr Supranational are held every year and are definitely in top 3 Manhunt international used to be the most prestigious back in 1990s to 2000s, I remember the old winners back then. But since 2010s they lost appeal and the winners now aren't in the same caliber as used to be Mr world is held every 2-3 years but they usually have the most number of delegates, plus they arguably have the finest and most well rounded guys competing... handsome, good personality and successful/well educated

People seem to forget that the main PURPOSE of pageants is To SELL. Organizers want to court sponsors' endorsement contracts, public appearances, etc. The Alphas have more leeway to deviate from standard beauty norms because of the strength of their brands. However Supra is still establishing itself and for now at least, will go for the obviously commercial choice.

The same thing could be said for female pageants. There's a reason why there’s never been a fat Miss Universe. I think it's normal to be held to a certain type of standard when it comes to pageantry. These are beauty pageants after all and part of being beautiful is having a good body female or male. It shows dedication and consistency towards a healthy lifestyle which is important for being a global ambassador. It's not enough to be smart and have a good personality. The majority of people in life have these qualities. What sets these pageant contestants apart from normal every day people is having those qualities as well as being beautiful and having an amazing body. We want to see the best of the best competing and winning. What's the point in rewarding mediocracy? I think Asia and The America's do so well in pageantry because countries from these regions treat pageantry like professional sports. The opportunities given to successful pageant girls are huge and they have big budgets and teams to turn anyone into a star. That's why they continue to win. I don't think these pageants have a type as such I feel that countries like Philippines, Venezuela and South Africa produce a lot of winners because the spend more time, money and effort creating future pageant kings and queens.

But and it's a big but I had called your success in this world a while back. I knew the quality of your content would take you places, and it has. Well done you. I saw Miss Supranational live. The new title holder certainly does fulfill a certain formula of queens that are crowned. But without being a judge we can never truly know what goes on during judging and why certain types of beauty or physical attributes are more favored. For example, Mr. Supranational is very handsome and charming but, in my opinion, his first runner up is more "handsome" or attractive or whatever. I am all about faces instead of overall bodies or height. These differences of opinion keep the world going around and around I suppose. Interesting and relevant topic today. Timely question as I found myself asking why I wanted a certain girl to win Miss SA due to her look. I had to stop myself. However, sometimes diversity can come at its own cost that changes the appeal of the pageant itself (that's just my opinion). If anybody can win Miss Universe then there isn't that much to fight for now is there. Even in Miss World that we can all agree is diverse in the women who win but they all fit a certain prototype just like you have said. At the end of the day, the eye of whoever is judging, decides what they believe is beautiful. Women truly have made strides in changing the beauty standard that the men can certainly catch up on... but essentially we all enjoying looking at the "beautiful" women as they take the stage. Also I agree that Miss Universe is notorious for sticking to a certain type for too long. First it was the blondes, now the brunettes smh that could certainly change

So many hot bets like Thailand 2018, Brazil 2017 and 2023, Venezuela 2021, and Indonesia 2022 had to sit out because of this Supra-type. And FYI, before there was Sierra Bearchell, there was Andrea Fonseka in Miss U 2004. The pageant community was just more vicious in her time than in Siera's time. She got out unscathed while Andrea was called Worst in Swimsuit for 2004

Every competition carries a particular brand the sponsoring organization upholds. Ever wondered with the success of say Africa as you mentioned in World and Universe,it yet to recieve a crown from International. It's only Philippines' Meghan Young to win a World crown considering the country fares well in Universe and Int'l. India also fared better in World *did the country has the highest # of wins? yet not the same popularity in Int'l. Watching ur commentary, the question that popped is Whether it's fair to limit (other than age for now) the participation of the delegate to another alpha pageant otherwise we wont have the celebrated cross-over queens like World to Universe 1971 Lebanon, 1989 Holland, 1990s Namibia & Nigeria,2018 Philippines,2020 Mexico (im not as versed with the other three pageants but some in memory like 1974 Wales (uni to world but dethroned)1979 Bermuda (uni to world),1987 Puerto Rico (Univ-Intl); 1997 Panama(uni to Intl) knowing by observation that they do have bias for the sake of brand and that maybe it's taken as a "negative" in the audience to have these biases they are still an corp. In the end.and when a particular stand-out doesnt win in one aside from the "not her time"maybe "it's not the right pageant"has to be considered when choosing the delegate to represent and see the "bias" as a transparency of sorts. It's yet to be seen what wud transpire with Natasha Joubert representing Miss U 2021 (where she was 2nd ru) and now winning Miss South Africa Universe-will she be the first delegate setting foot on the Miss Universe stage twice? Just like sports-gymnasts and weightlifters are smaller in stature, swimmers and tennis players are leaner, volleyball and basketball taller. Even locally in the Philippines,it's often a big topic re. delegates with multiple race origins winning at one point was questioned. But nothin is set in stone... Even if it took as long as 2023 for Fil-am to win Miss texas, then miss usa-then universe. 1997 Universe Hawaii Brook Lee was of mixed race. And only in 1990 Miss Michigan USA became the 1st black american to win follwed by Texas 1995 Chelsi Smith(+) to win Miss U. This recent decade, black americans became Miss USA delagates: 2016Deshauna, 2017Kari,2019 Cheslie(+), 2020 Asya,2021 Elle(back to back to back) I guess in the end, people with passion like yours TPN/Roger are the unsung hereos who adds to the relevance of the glitzy world of pageants. Perhaps this was especially true if they started with Lynda Lee Mead and didn’t end with Pam Eldred, who was blonde. In 1978, when Kylene Barker won Miss Virginia, a local critic wrote a column on how unusual it was for a blonde to win in the Miss America system, even if this was just two years after Dorothy Benham won.

Hi Emmanuel, thanks for your comment. People questioning the relevance of pageantry is almost as old as the pageants themselves! But certainly in more recent times there’s the feeling that pageants are becoming less in line with modern thinking as it relates to superficiality and a focus on aesthetics, body shape, etc. As I touched on very briefly at the end of this video, some pageants’ move towards having their winners also be philanthropists or community leaders indeed brings into question why these people also need to be beautiful to do good work. On the other hand, there’s no denying that we as humans appreciate the physical form and some (not all) of us aspire to be like others based on their style, looks, fitness or other surface qualities. Obviously as a pageant fan I see great benefit from these competitions, and how they truly motivate contestants to be better versions of themselves. That, of course, only matters when the people in question are well-balanced in terms of their eating habits, self-perception of their bodies and minds. In short, as long as pageants can project a majority positive image for the contestants and also its fans then they can be good things to allow people to thrive in an area they enjoy. Having said that, toxic fans are a huge problem and have genuine negative impacts on contestants who are only trying their best and hoping to make others proud. Nothing is perfect, but I certainly see more value in pageantry than in so many other forms of entertainment and reality programming. Pageants CAN be a positive influence on others, but they’re definitely not perfect in their current form. What do you think about that topic?

Roger this is a very good pageant panel topic though I am starting to feel many national and international pageants are becoming accepting of diversity but I do feel skin color is an issue in certain countries that do not show the true diversity in skin color that exist in those countries. We should not crown someone to fit a quota but we also should not deny giving a deserving winner a title because they don't fit a particular beauty preference. As a person of color, I can see beauty in all shades.

I visited Colombia 5 years ago. I was surprised to see many black people. I Never knew that before and by watching miss universe, they always sent white girls. Meanwhile, in my opinion Colombia has probably the most blacks women on earth, base on what i saw when i was there.

@@mymiphone1841 if you go by what you see representing Latin America in pageants you’d think only white people live there.

7:22 Miss Earth's first ever winner was from Denmark.... and I do not know if this accounts for both European and African winner but in Miss Earth 2002, the original winner was in fact a European woman-- from Bosnia and Herzegovina but was later dethroned and replaced by Miss Kenya. So far, in Miss Earth's history, BOSHRZ and DEN have remained the only two women who won the title. However, if we discount BOSHRZ, then this makes Denmark the only European woman to ever win ME.

Weird isnt it, blonde's rule 50s to 80s. After Jennifer in 2004, the next time a blonde reached top 2 was in 2019..

Let's see on the new directorship of the thai person, she starts well the pageant last 2022 by selecting deserving candidates. I hope the IMG legacy are forgotten forever, worst production and selection of winners.

Pageants have a certain "mold" or stereotype, this helps them stand out from competitors and associate that stereotype with their brand. It is very important. For example Miss universe....fierce confident smart eloquent modelesque walk and Hollywood glamour Miss international... Tall white demure doll-like soft spoken/soft features Miss World... Beautiful inside and out, well rounded, Disney princess, royal type of beauty, has a heart for charities Mr international.... usually tall lean hairless swimmers body type Mr Supranational... Tall scruffy daddy looks manly muscular who is also handsome and inspiring So there you have it,. stereotypes are important, though they sometimes break that stereotype to eliminate predictability and boredom, they usually stick to it as part of the culture of the pageant
