Ball kept so low its almost unplayable pitch. Sachin I think was out off a no ball. Not sure though

21 years ago and this loss still rankles me!! India could have achieved the unthinkable!! Could have proved decisive for the Indian cricket

Ian Bishop became one of my few favourite commentators......

The interesting thing about this match was when India got bowled out it rained heavily and the field was flooded for two days. If India could have hung a little long they could have earned a draw. But what a Bowling attack that was.

That attack, that pitch ...... I backed no batting line up to survive. Franklin Rose tho... Something special that never came to fruition.

Bishop and Rose, the lethal combo that didn’t happen. One of the many sad things about Windies into the 2000’s

I remember this match. It was a shameless loss comparable to the Ignominous collapse in SA in 1996.

Thank you for suggesting this, since I've wanted to relive it again from my school days . I remember that it was the only Test game with a winner during that 1997 five test tour by India.It coincided with Brian Lara getting his first (even though temporary) try at the West Indies captaincy.The win boosted his chances at finally getting it permanently in 1998.The loss affected counterpart Tendulkar's hold on the position.

True, this loss really hurts because the runs required were so less- however this pitch is a minefield as correctly commentated both by Sunny Gavaskar and Boycott and anyone looking at the highly uneven bounce can gauge why India couldnt chase this. Still i think India could have had fought a bit more. And maybe a few decisions also were poor Sidhu's dismissal on a no ball. That umpire is even more blind than Bucknor.

Old is gold always.. i still recollect this test match lost.

That was real cricket of 90s

26 years ago almost 27 years, I can remember that match I was in my early 20s at the time and it was all about cricket those days most of Jamaican women used to watch cricket back then....

The Windies players from the 70's and 80's would be multi millionaires if the IPL was around back then.

The pitch was bad , but there were some excellent deliveries that got the batmens out.

WI was a Strong team in 1997 with the tallented bowlers Rose,Ambrose,Walsh and Batsmans Lara,Chanderpaul...

I remember watching this with my pops in tobago west indies was a force man .... im in america now an when i go too gas station i tease the Pakistan or indian score keepers on how or team was so much better

marvelous performance by the W.I fast bowlers however the only one Indian had presented the great resistance and that was Sunil Gavaskar from commentary box...

This Indian cricket team was filled with real legendary players. If the current Indian fancy cricket team would had faced this West Indies cricket team then they would have gone all out for 25 runs. or would had lost the match with one innings.

This was the match between humans and aliens great windies skills at best. Miss these kings of game I still remember their terror on field. God bless all of them specially lara.

​@@mauham7557 I disagree. IPL hasn't helped but it's the same for all national sides. What ruined west indies cricket was the incompetence and corruption of the WICB. Their refusal to plan for the future and lack of investment at state level into the game in the carribean.

Beating westindies in westindies in 80s and 90s was next to impossible. It was no shame for theopposition to admit it at that time.

Talk about a minefield. Ball constantly taking off like crazy from length and seaming with every delivery. Pretty much impossible to bat on. Recall watching this live as a kid and being embarrassed by India's failure to chase a paltry score of 120. Watching these highlights today though....I can at least understand why it happened.

May be because of his wicket keeping skills, but he was the reason West Indies won Champions Trophy back in 2004.

All of you are wrong,these things only happen in Barbados and Jamaica.The morning of this match the field around the wicket was water logged.No rain had fallen.The cricket Board refuse to let India bat at 11 pm.

I still remember that I slept that night considering it's a small target but found out in the morning that we lost the game.

This was a very tricky pitch. I had my doubts if India will be able to score 120 on this even with a very strong batting line up. A couple of friends even made fun of me for saying it. Look at the balls that got Sindh and Azharuddin. Shows the unpredictability of the pitch.

Certain 💔 we were so close to making history and that time if would been a great feat.. Still hurts we might have won this it was decent lineup.. May be India should have sent mongia or kumble and ask them to try and score a 20..anyway well played westindies and good fight by India 🇮🇳

The worst of the pitch they could have made... bloody started crumbling in the end.one ball bouncing over head and other ball bouncing below knee pitching at the same spot...a disgrace pitch.

That pitch was utterly unplayable. I only started following cricket in the early 2000s and nowadays that game would have been abandoned. No wonder batting averages were lower in the 90s than they are today. Imagine Smith, Kholi, Root etc averaging over 50 on these wickets. Impossible to bat on.

That is why great batsmen like Viv Richards were able to just score 8500 runs in Tests, while players like Kallis have scored over 12000. Pitches nowadays are too batsman friendly. This is the influence of 20/20 and what not. IMO, a score of 100 back in the old days was the equivalent of 150 today.

Stop talking Shit. The pitch was unplayable when it was time for teams to chase. The pitch was always the same. Nowadays batsmen should be ashamed because there arent much great fast bowlers now like in the 70's, 80's and 90's.

This match is the greatest regret of Sachin's career he once said. We ran to see the match in our tiffin time in Class IX but by then the match was over
