India Is At The Centre of Indo-Pacific Security

How important is the power over land in the Indo-Pacific - an area largely defined by the sea and oceanic security? Does power over land play a significant role in defining military might?

A stringent question for any US general would be, "What are the learnings US Army has learnt from creating local armed groups during fight against USSR which later bitten back during 9/11? Has that tactic back fired? Will it be tried again in future warfare?"

And the answer is that US did not learn anything from that as they repeated the same tactic in Syria. To oust Assad, they gave weapons and cash to anti-Assad Islamist fighters. From there, ISIS emerged.

General Flynn is a very shrude person. He deflected every provocative question regarding India-US divergent geopolitical interests. Every answer He gave felt generic and bland because His words can be used against him(Ex:- Ex German Navy vice admiral was too frank about Russian leadership and made personal opinions in India. His own government make him regret for those words). People like Genaral Flynn knows too much that can't be shared in public domain.

Despite several provocative and political questions Gen. Flynn deftly navigated himself and kept his calm. He is a General and not a politician or a businessman. Seldom we see US Generals interacting this freely with the knowledgeable public in India. This is a good start. As the good General touched upon on the bogey called ‘interoperability’ such things do not happen on the touch of a button. But then as he said it starts with the human strand first and we have made a good beginning though it took several wasted decades to get here. It took the Modi government to take the bold step. Let’s also not forget the US has changed. It has learnt it was time to ditch Papisthan. The Quad is for real and India is integral to it. Indo-Pacific has emerged as the central theatre. Let neither India nor the US come with too much baggage of the past as we build our new relationship. The General’s presence in India itself is symbolic and a message to the world.

But when I visit India in July, and I go to a random person, will they really be able to answer questions of the United States? US needs the partnership more than India. India always keeps multiple options open. And if partnership is really the crucial cornerstone of the INDO-US relationship, then it is even more necessary to have a clarity of the positions of each party even if that requires asking blunt and straight forwards questions on the face. A relation where one cannot ask straight-up questions on bitter topics is a compromise not a partnership. All parties either need to come clear and be able to call a spade a spade or keep being suspicious and assuming of each other. Its better to be safe now than sorry later.

China has already started mapping the ocean floor in Indian and Pacific oceans in order to deploy Navy drones to gather intelligence. In the recent past I wrote my comments about Chinese drones presence near the Chennai Navy port and it was confirmed by news channel from India. At the present time China has their Navy bases where they have submarines moving on rotational basis to monitor Navy activities of QUAD alliance.

What is US doing in South China Sea ? Why not confine to Monroe doctrine instead eyeing Taiwan as a US aircraft carrier as Mc Arthur had predicated . It's mind boggling to imagine what could be in our interest fending for US protection of power against Chinse ! Indian Military Veterans .

The moderator behaves and sounds like a ringmaster in a circus instead of one who's a senior member of a "respectable" think tank in Delhi. The needless display of familiarity of being on first name terms with the US General and the derisive comment on "mutuality like fight till the last Ukrainian ?" hardly a good start to a healthy and meaningful conversation on the roles of armies in the in matters of regional security. Given India's refusal to condemn Russia's war on Ukraine in clear terms on account of "historical reasons and economic interests", it's likely that India would be replaced by the UK in the QUAD, going forward, as has been written about in the western press last week.

India would like to work with countries which have mutual respect for each other. If one dominates the other then its not good. Of course sometimes there is need for "Big Brother, small brother" relationship, but that is only until the small brother is small and needs the big brother to protect. India is not a small brother, and does not need the protection of Russia or USA, yes we would like to maintain best relationships with Russia, USA, Japan and other countries which want to work with india for mutual benefit and progress. Also the problem with USA is that at one moment, they want to be allies with India, but then they ask us to choose friends, which is unfair, do we tell Americans who they should deal with? NO. Also USA wants to be allies, but also interfering in our internal matters. India has a lot to talk about America's internal matters, but since its USA internal matters, we do not intefere, so the USA should take a leaf out of this book and accept it and work with it. USA will not be a super power long with the inflation coming soon, so its right time for USA to have good friends who can help them to tide them over the expected inflation and problems.

The general- a good military man, disciplined one at that. But the questioners were more like intellecutals asking questions which should have been put to a diplomat turned NSA or the future planners of security in the USA.Secondly asking uncomfortable questions on their army's failures is not welcome by any military general. He has his limitations in putting forward his views being in a democratic country and his limitations in answering questions were exposed. But I would be more pro-the general than the questioners as he was expecting questions on operations of the military in his area of jurisdiction(indo-pacific)-the threats, their solutiions or the counter strategies in some expected events/unexpected events taking place and none of the questioners were up to the mark in that.

Who appointed this host... He doesn't know how to behave with a person of such high stature... At times he tried to make him feel embarrassed but General Flynn is way out of his league and he tackled everything calmly. While conducting such events hosts should prioritise on how much could be capitalised on issues of mutual interest rather than projecting how good your journalism is. At last the Indian-US relation is one of the defining factor in geopolitical stability of the world for this entire century. Love from India ❤️❤️ Long live India... Long Live USA.

India holds the key to the outcome of US-China tension. Indian EA Minister said to the West: Your enemies are not my enemies. We have made improvements in our border disputes with China but still not fully resolved. Kissinger, the master of divide and rule, said: We opened up China to keep it away from USSR. It's a mistake to drive China and Russia together. Study their differences to keep them apart. Lesson: Does India gain more by being a friend to all?
