Indians subjugated themselves for 1000's of years through the caste system and the arrival of the Indo-Aryans. I don't think the arrival of the British made any difference with regards to subjugation. I mean India was already ruled and subjugated by the Mughals before the British came along.

The very reason these people don't mix with the general population is because of their experiences during colonial rule. Take for example the tribes of the sentinal island in the same island group as the video. Their first interaction with an outsider was with white colonialists who kidnapped various members of their tribe in order to teach them English and use them as translators when the brits wanted to take over their home. Every single one of those tribal people died in captivity and never returned. Ever since them they have been hostile to any visitors and have killed multiple people who attempted to contact them all because the brits kidnapped and killed their people

Dude it's at the Straits of Malacca, literally one of the most strategic points on the globe, where vast amounts of trade flows between East Asia and the rest of the world. It's amazing India didn't do this 75 years ago already. Moreover, this will provide India with potentially immense leverage over China in the event they block the Straits, thereby cutting fuel, material, and food imports as well as Chinese exports.

​@@angusp5178 the Straits of Malacca does not need another hub. Singapore is too efficient and there's no need for another stopover, especially one that's in the middle of nowhere, I mean the islands are closer to Myanmar than India. For example have a look at Aceh - it's at a even more strategic location at the mouth of the Straits, but it's hardly seeing any economic development. The primary purpose is military, but China can export/import via the Panama Canal, the Arctic or overland via Central Asia and Pakistan. And renewables in China + captive supplier in Russia now means that it doesn't depend on Middle Eastern energy. And China's going to have a much bigger and more capable navy by the time this gets built.

​​​@@Avantime look, 80% of China's oil imports come through the Malacca Strait, together with 2/3 of its total trade moving through the Malacca Strait - that includes a vast quantity of food and fertilizer imports. This is what the PRC calls the 'Malacca Dilemma', because they understand that maritime routes are the only routes that provide real security. The notion that overland trade via Pakistan or Central Asia or indeed through Siberia can solve this dilemma is symptomatic of folks not understanding how the world works. There’s a reason why a small island in northern Europe dominated the globe for several centuries and why the Anglosphere continues to do so. It's the same reason why Port Blair exists and why from a strategic perspective India should have had a serious naval base on Great Nicobar yesterday.... (sadly for the indigenous tribe)

@@garyc9908 Life expectancy increased. Plain and simple. India’s birth rate is declining, and it’s at 1.9, i.e. it’s already below replacement level. While you are at it, why aren’t you questioning the population explosion in China?

Why is channel 4 so obsessed with the tribe losing its way of life? Does it want them to stay as hunter/gatherers for ever so that these westerners can see them in videos like these and be amazed at how premitive these tribes are? The country will build what ever infrastructure is needed for its needs, the people of the teibe will decide if they want to embrace modernity or live their lives out in the forest... The forest reserves are already made as national park and no development will be happening in those areas. Bottom coast Already has some bases. Why unnecessarily say half truths to paint a different picture? India takes more care of its tribes than Britishers ever did of the natives in your past.

Racism n Slavery in manny western countries; ethic cleansing in America in America, Canada, , Australia etc, untouchables called burakumins in Japan, Apartheid in SAfrica, class system in England, France n some other EU countries. Discrimination has happened in many countries in the past. Laws have been brought to end discrimination everywhere but some level of rascism, castism, classism still exist though we have come a long way!

And as for racism , you don’t treat Kashmiris with a lot of respect. How’s about giving them the plebiscite that the UN voted for 70 yrs ago. These same so called experts keep crying persecution for each n every thing but American pew report on Religious tolerance in India is better than many western developed democracies! So give us a break! This is the same media that talks about Russia getting up one fine day n invading Ukraine as if decades of NATO expansion had nothing to do with the repeated warnings before the invasion. I do not support any form of aggression but I do not believe in this holier than thou mentality of this one sided media as well! People who have wiped out natives, put them in residential schools n actively tried to wipe their culture are in no moral high ground to lecture others! Travel to India or do some basic research n then you will know that the reality is very different from narrative. Tomorrow if India will find oil wells or agree to give land to build a US naval or army base or become an ally of the west then all these criticism will die down. Regular pressure tactics before the elections!
