27 years later and this still brings goosebumps. Russell was a jokester and felt like he failed as a father but in the end, he showed how much he cared and made the ultimate sacrifice for mankind. One of America’s greatest underrated heroes. 🇺🇸

I love how Russell did that kamikaze attack on the ship, yet was a jokester right to the end. He was a man who made the ultimate sacrifice for man kind and did it with style. One of the most memorable scenes in the movie.

It's hard to say. Don't forget we don't see how these two acted together when they WEREN'T in front of the camera. Not saying they didn't get along, but there's been some actors who don't get along together. Tommy Lee Jones and Jim Carrey in Batman Forever. Apparently Tommy Lee Jones didn't like Jim Carrey.

@XXLSSBBW ~ Very true. Another I heard was Wesley Snipes and Ryan Reynolds. They were great together on 'Blade Trinity', but I heard they couldn't stand each other off screen. I don't know how true that is, but it's not unheard of.

@@XXLSSBBWTommy Lee Jones is notorious for not getting along with other actors, especially if those aren't classically trained. It's got something to do with the fact that many untrained actors are way better than his trained leather face. Jealousy of a craftsman for an artist - a tale as old as mankind.

Just remember that this movie didn't have a sequel of any kind. It never happened. This is how it ended 😄

It is originally the true ending by the way because these aliens travelled with their whole complete civilization, as mentioned in the movie. So after the movie they are completely eliminated.

This movie is just too good The second one was never gonna work without, Will
Imagine being kidnapped and probed or much more. Then being a pilot and returning the favor. So good!
I saw this with my Mom and Dad on opening weekend with a packed house back in '96. My parents were kind of 'old school' when it came to entertainment but they really enjoyed ID4 and cheered with the rest of the people in the theater for scenes like these. My Dad would pass away about 2-1/2 months later but I remember just having a good time watching this with my Mom and Dad.

Still give you goosebumps watching it from 2023.
I remember seeing this when the movie came out. Everyone in the theater clapped and cheered when the spaceship finally went down.

I still can't get over the explosions looking so realistic. And yes, I do know this was done with practical, on-set effects but so nice to see that after scathing criticism for looking too outdated or nothing better than Star Wars (at the time), Independence Day was the last hurrah for practical effects in summer blockbuster movies.

Sucks that Randall never got the recognition he deserved, Will Smith's Character got his picture in the white House, that should've been Randall's Picture, he was the one who brought the first Alien Ship down in Human History, they should've named the new fighter after him!

I never understood why Randy Quaid's character was never seen as a hero in the second Independence Day movie and have a picture of him as they did with Will Smith.I mean he flew into the Alien ship and destroyed it...damn hero if you ask me!

One thing I love are the attention to sound details in movies, and just about anything. That sound made when the weapon was stopped just before the explosion was a fantastic detail.
It takes one to make that sacrifice for mankind I salute you Russell 🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡
I love this part when Russell said do me a favour tell my children I love them very much then he said HELLO BOYS IM BACK.
The President just says “Good luck buddy” like the dude is up next in beer pong. Kinda accepts that they are all screwed. Hears “Up Yours and hello boys I’m back” over radio. SHIP EXPLODES!!!
Russell is my hero I always wished when i was a kid i could be just as brave. Russell is the hero everyone should look up too.
I went to see ID4 three or four times in the theaters as a 16 year old teenager. One of my all-time favorite movies.
Old is always gold. No He is like a diamond in the sky.

0:49 Russel knows at that moment there is only one option left to stop the aliens. On a lighter note: the guy next to President Whitmore at 5:27 in the Harley Davidson hat, white t-shirt and aviator sunglasses always looked badass to me.

5:34 Since the shields were disabled, the alien spaceships were no match for blowpipe darts.
Took me until I became an adult to realize this was because of Russel's earlier mishap.

Also what I liked about when the Pilots are walking into the bunker is you see all ages and race coming in (yes I know that they were looking for anyone that could fly a plane). My 2 favorites are the man with long beard and the older silver haired man just behind the President. I don't know why but I just like those 2. I think it is meant to show that just because you are old doesn't mean you are down for the count.

Absolutely! And think about it they are probably Vietnam veterans or maybe even Korean War veterans. This was the mid-90s So Korea would only have been 40 years ago. So Korean war vets would have been in their 60s. Just an all-around great movie.

@@philipbay1548 Most would've been in their mid-late 70s by then and my uncle who was a pilot is that and only just stopped from health issues, so a guy that old in good shape could handle it and he learned to fly from WW2 RNZAF pilots, so it's quite likely then. I've meet a few in their 80s/90s who were still fairly strong, so had they been there they'd have possibly flown if they kept it up. One called Les Munro who was born in 1919 was still working daily on his farm into his 80s, though I think he stopped flying and flew heavy bombers, though he did help inspire Star Wars. As you said race there, it'll have been pretty cool to see a 75 year old Māori warrior there and have him say he shot down several Nazis or something... it happened!

Something I got to thinking about in relation to the two volunteer pilots you mentioned: wouldn't it have been interesting if they were in an F-14 or a two seat F-18 for the final battle.
Childhood favorite movie on Star network... Was amazed to see the realistic explosions, alien spaceship design
Very hard to believe this movie came out in 96 where did the time go..great movie always w great actors
I hope the crop duster abductee was nominated for the Medal of Honor. and it was unanimously and passed in record time.

Daniel and Steve’s escape is what I call getting out of a pinch, and cutting it close big time.

on Starfox 64 the planet Katina has the player fight a giant saucer that is powering up a laser weapon. When the player wins a clip plays out showing the saucer crashing and exploding similar to ID4
The theater I went to to see this all stood and cheered at this scene

I saw this film 6 or 7 times and I still one of my favorite movies of the 90’s next to terminator 2, Friday, and saving private Ryan this films made you feel alive made you cry and just made you feel that is what missing in today’s movies and society.

There is no greater sacrifice then giving your life for your children.... And I know this scene is BS, but it still brings me to tears when he says "Tell my children that I love them"...

Easily one of the greatest movies ever made. Too bad the sequel is one of the worst
As corny as this movie was, had some great moments. The exchange between Pullman and Goldblum was so well done - the power of feeling deep, genuine respect for a person who holds a position worthy of respect - touching to think about that, given how void our Nation is of respectable people in national leadership positions.

Movie or not, the fact they don’t have a statue of Russell Casse, is a crime of astronomical proportions.
The one movie that did not need a sequel.
One last thing I have to say about the volunteer pilot in the white t-shirt next to President Whitmore when they come into the bunker: unless I'm mistaken he was the president's wingman during the final battle.
3:15 - they got the cat!!! The aliens must know that cats are the apex life form on earth and that humans are merely their servants, so the cats made a deal with the aliens.
3:00 What would have gone through the alien's head, seeing a human skull on the screen, is hard to imagine.
