A littoral combat ship is either of two classes(the Independence-class and the Freedom-class) of relatively small surface vessels designed for operations near shore by the U.S. Navy.
The design for Independence is based on a high-speed trimaran. The concept was to create a small, fast, stealthy surface, modular mission capability, maneuverable ships capable of high defense capacity in the littoral. The 418-foot (127 m) surface design requires a crew of 43 sailors. The ship is easy to reconfigure for different roles due to its modular design, the LCS will be able to replace slower, more specialized ships.

Probably a dumb question but where are the cannons? I know the ships launch missiles - but the big guns, where are they?

Sadly, they are kinda irrelevant for this ship's roles, that's why it only has mostly missiles.

At the very front of the shop there's a 57 mm boforos auto cannon. It's fairly small as far as warships are concerned, but modern war ships are all about missiles, while cannons are considered a bit dated . They just put one there to give a low cost alternative for low value threats, when launching $100,000+++ missile isn't necessary.

1. Forward on the prow of the ship- main gun a 57mm. 2. 8 .50 cal. machine guns mounted. Various positions on the ship. 3. A 6 - barrel 20 mm gatling cannon, posted on prow or rear of ship, some Independance Class ships have instead an Anti-air missile launcher.
I thought LCS are being decomissioned?

You know, I feel like if this comment really is true, and the ship is not seconds away from decomission, then we maybe witnessing the slow yet painful down fall of the navy due to the ridiculous costs.
