How To US Save $13 Billion Aircraft Carrier From Sinking

Building an aircraft carrier takes generations of experience, hundreds of thousands of man-hours, years of planning and steady determination. USS Gerald R. Ford or (CVN 78) is the product of years of construction, and before that, years of planning and design. Five thousand shipbuilders in Newport News and thousands of suppliers across the United States contributed to this first-in-class ship.
Hello everyone, welcome back again with us in another episode of Military TV. Today we are about to discuss “The USS Gerald R. Ford defense systems ", as the most advanced aircraft carrier in the world. So sit back, relax and enjoy this video!

Sometimes we deploy two carriers at once, i feel sorry for anyone stupid enough to attack them. They have missile support 20 times over, the air wing alone is an awesome of weapons systems, Not to mention two submarines at least travels with strike group. The USA would never let anyone threaten there security net those destroyers throw over to protect carrier flanks.

    People do downplay the value of experience. The British beat the Germans even though Germany had a decent navy when they entered in WW1 but British experience at ship design, ship building, and fighting at sea lead to Germanys navy being completely crushed. The US has similar experience at shipbuilding with some of our first warships, like Old Ironsides, taking on top of the line european battleships and winning. China has a similar situation as the Germans: giant rapidly developing navy but virtually no experience for the last few hundred years and even before thay theyve never been a real naval power.

    Hypersonic missiles can still be jammed and spoofed, as well as use decoys, chaff, etc. Plus, there’s some doubt that Russia and China really have such weapons as they’re both known for overhyping their capabilities. Neither has actually shown a hypersonic missile in flight for more than just a few seconds, and the US x-51 Waverider broke the world record for hypersonic duration of flight, and that was over a decade ago. What is not surprising is that Russia copied it to make their Zircon missile.

    OK-----------. Unless the 20mm Seawiz is upgraded with at least a 35mm gun with proximity rounds if not true target seeking smart rounds effective out to 2+ miles they should be replaced by the SeaRam launchers that can reach out and kill missiles over 5-miies away instead of just the last 1,000 meters "hopefully"!!! The Sea Wiz has been demonstrated to be worthless against supersonic Missiles with its short range of 1,000-meters against a maneuvering missile moving kilometers a second. Though the SeaRam mounts with only 11 rounds should get a reloader that takes less than an hour to reload missiles. Preferable less than a minute... Using a rack of missiles close by in a deck house or below deck that is ready to slide out or lift up to the launchers Missile box to push missiles into any vacant tubes in the Box in one easy push, 11missiles could be reloaded in seconds with the box reloader reloaded quickly in the nearby magazine instead of crates of 4 (with storage crates of 4, most launchers are only loaded with 8 missiles (instead of 11) as loading only 3 missiles from a crate leaves the ODD missile unprotected and awkward returning it to the magazine, if the launcher is fully loaded) hauled up from deep inside the ship on forklifts and elevators, broken open, missiles inspected and finally slide into each launch tube one at a time with the help of a crane and alignment bar. A Job that is almost impossible in Combat, bad weather, a rolling ship, with most launchers mounted high up away from the main deck. Almost as bad as trying to load the Sea Wiz... When Chinese Missile are flying at the Fleet by the hundreds in waves, only having 11 Rams to destroy stragglers is just Pitiful... Almost as bad as having only 21 in the stand alone mount that usually only gets 20 rounds loaded, again to prevent hauling a partially empty crate back down to the Magazine... (regs prevent moving or storing a missiles outside their shipping crates without approved racks in unprotected areas). Just easier not to bother filling the launcher.

    "The U.S. Navy knows this from experience. In 2005, the Navy itself targeted the decommissioned carrier America in order to determine just how much punishment the vessel could withstand before slipping beneath the waves. "The ship was pummeled by explosions both above and below the waterline," The War Zone reporter Tyler Rogoway explained in 2018. "After nearly four weeks of these activities, the carrier was scuttled. On May 14, 2005, the vessel's stern disappeared below the waterline and the ship began its voyage to the seafloor." "America stood up to four weeks of abuse and only succumbed to the sea after demolition teams scuttled the ship on purpose once and for all, it's clear that America was built to sustain heavy damage in combat and still stay afloat."

    Having just a few missiles for the defense of the carrier is woefully deficient as in a real shooting war the enemy will be shooting dozens of missiles against it. The ship defense is pitifully deficient (by design?).

    @@piepile6328 On a side note, although the VLS system is efficient for storing the missile on these modern boats, but reloading can only be done at the shipyards. There are some newer missiles that are designed to be smaller and can loadout 4 to a cell, but they tend to be much shorter ranger missiles as a factor of their tiny size. When I see the Russian stuff and they load their S300 & S400 missiles in rotary magazines below deck, it makes our stuff look tiny in comparison.

    @@piepile6328 True, but the main point is that the carrier is the biggest target for the enemy and thus it's protection should be proportional to its value, right? A modern peer enemy won't be attacking with 2 or 3 but salvoes of dozens at a time. Plus the huge flaws of modern warships is that to save space they all use the VLS system. After the missiles are expended they have to return to a specific port to reload as it cannot be done manually at sea

    @WL2020 Actually I am! However, I tend to always be independent in my analysis. Being American does not mean always supporting the USA side, if that's your definition. If you cant bear to bring yourself to say that your side is deficient or could do things better does not mean that you are not Patriotic to your country.

    How would the carrier be able to defend against something purely kinetic? ICBM armed with a tungsten rod of doom dropped from high altitude? I feel like i just disarmed the whole us fleet. Bigbrain time

  • @jonathanryan9946

    @jonathanryan9946

    Well something on the kinetic attack still needs to guide it to its target. So another kinetic weapon could damage it, plus slow it down/knock it off course. A laser could just burn it to pieces, or absolutely destroy its aerodynamics so it'd just wildly fly off course. Now, in fairness, I don't think cwis will stop it though and explosive missiles might not have as much stopping power against it as a kinetic missile.

    A new carrier plus planes, bombs and a year or two of operating costs adds up to roughly $15 billion. Assuming nukes aren't used, can a carrier even do $15 billion worth of damage? Can it carry enough conventional bombs to do even $1 billion worth of damage? The lethality per dollar -- bang for the buck -- seems terrible. I understand carriers were crucial in the pacific in WWII but carriers cost so much less in the 1940s that they made more sense then. No longer. Is anyone in the Navy asking these big questions in a serious way?!
