Incredibly good to drive AND a great deal! (Alfa Romeo Giulia 2024 review)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Detailed review of the Alfa Romeo Giulia Veloce, including handling, powertrain, ride quality, price and features.
The Alfa Romeo Giulia is a sporty and luxurious midsize sedan that competes with the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Jaguar XE and Volvo S60.
But unlike the BMW and Mercedes, the Alfa has increased in price only very gradually over the last few years, which now makes it very good value for money.

Bought a Giulia 6 months ago (pre facelift version) and I can honestly say this car is a dream to drive, while we are also able to use it as a family car (wife & one kid). Both the boot space and back seat space is sufficient for a family of three. What I love most about this car is that nothing takes away your attention from driving. No big fancy screens, nothing high tech, just old school buttons, two paddle shifters, and a responsive steering wheel. Given that I am in my thirties I almost jumped on the EV+tech craze but the driving experience is more important for me than checking numbers on a giant screen while driving.

@@stebansb I didn't have to go the mechanic since I bought the car. Unfortunately, Alfa Romeo has a bad reputation from the past and it is all too often still labeled as unreliable. I've done my research before buying the car, and the Guilia is on par with BMWs and Mercedes when it comes to reliability.

Same - except i bought a high mileage 2017. I didn't intend to buy a 2017 Alfa TI Sport Q2 with 75k miles but it was almost the perfect spec, 1 owner, and extremely well taken care of. Multiple people have commented that they thought it was new. So far, i had to replace the OEM battery (common issue - it was on its third). I replaced with the giulia forum recommended upgrade battery. Fairly easy to self install. 2017 is supposed to be the most unreliable year and i'm only 3k miles into my ownership but everything is perfect except for some weirdness with the window switches in driver's door panel. They all work individually but can be a bit touchy when more than one are used at a time. The transmission is great but i still wish it was available with a 6 speed manual as that would make it a perfect car. I was able to get a mopar maxcare warranty for 3 years and up to 115k miles for about $2k. The car plus the warranty was $18.5k (USD). That is a crazy good value.

@@bandagraph Thes awesome. We picked up our 2020 Ti Sport Nero (Veloce) two years ago. It was used with low mileage and has given us zero issues. Occasionally the infotainment system acts up, but the infotainment in our Mazda's also did the same thing from time to time. The Giulia has to be the most underrated car on the market. It's a joy to drive. The 2.0 liter turbo is fast, and sounds pretty good IMO even with the stock exhaust. We went with the red leather seats. The sport suspension is amazing too. The downside is that tires are crazy expensive and hard to come by if you stick with the OE set of Pirelli's. The staggered stance looks great though with the wider wheels in the back. Ours is white, with yellow calipers, red interior, black edition, and we added a carbon fiber spoiler because the backend felt like it was missing something. It's a shame Alfa's past, and their association with Fiat and Chrysler seems to bring their value and desirability down. The car is tight with zero creaks or rattles. It's responsive, and has the best paddle shifters/transmission combo on any car that costs under 100k.

Cross shopped my '23 Estrema (with adaptive dampers, carbon fiber bits) against the M340i and S5. Down on power (and the sound of a 6 cylinder) but I don't regret my decision one bit. The Alfa looks and drives so much better than even the in between performance models the Germans make. I also get questions about it every time I visit the gas station - I even got into a car show in a beach resort town inadvertently (was just trying to park, and they let me in as the car is so special and rare in North America). At the end of the day, I bought a car to drive it and to enjoy it, I didn't buy an app. And yes, you will look back at it every time you park it.

Thank you for an excellent review. I have owned 3 Alfas in my lifetime, the last a 1984 Giulietta 2L. We ended up keeping it 24 years as we loved it so much and had a great local mechanic. No rust and no major mechanical issues; just those expected during that period of time. Sold only due to health issues but if I can ever overcome them this is the car I will buy. You have convinced me.

I bought an Alfa Giulia Veloce based on your previous review - the previous spec, in Alfa Red with tan leather seats. I had it de-mufflered by Exhaust World in North Melbourne. They have built a custom muffler for the Veloce. It now sounds magic - a lovely growl, no drone and it’s not garish or loud. It’s basically the perfect car. I love it. (And so does my wife).

I've owned a '17 Veloce for 3 years now. Go into the deal with your eyes open. Know that the dealer and support network in Aus (and most places) isn't great. You should find a specialist mechanic that loves working on them, and know that it will cost a little more to service (but nothing worse than other euros - and yearly intervals are nice). They have some quirks, but they are mostly endearing. You'll find excuses to hop in it. It's special. They deserve to have sold more, but it's kind of nice they are rare on the road at the same time! I liked it so much I picked up a Giuletta '15 QV to match up the set.

Since 3 weeks I now own a Giulia Veloce Blu Misano, and it’s my fifth Alfa Romeo ( after a 33, a 147 and two Giulietta’s). The driving always stands out. And the Giulia makes you want to drive again and again.

I've had my 2017 Giulia Veloce since Feb 2020 and absolutely love it! It's such a thrill to drive and I quite often receive compliments for how it looks. I know the back seat seems tight but I've got an 8 and 11 year old and they sit back there without any complaints, so I think it's a decent family hauler. The only major thing I've had go wrong with it in 3+ years of ownership was the high pressure fuel pump failed. Funnily enough, it's made by Bosch in Germany 🙂 Being a 2017 it also didn't come with Apple Carplay or Android Auto but that was easily rectified by ordering a self-install module from ENG-Custom in Italy. I now have wireless carplay and AA which I believe is a must-have these days, and renders the rest of the infotainment system useless anyway. I love the way the screen is seamlessly integrated into the dash though. I definitely agree that Alfa should have done a better job with the exhaust note but I took mine to a reputable exhaust shop and it's now got a beautiful note without being too loud. One thing I will correct you on though, is that I don't think Alfa removed the under thigh support adjustment, it just never had it. Mine is a 17 and you can't lift just the front base of the seat, only the rear. I agree with you however, that this is a significant omission that would have made the seating position so much more comfortable. Thanks for a fair and great review.

Great review as always, Tom. I own a 2016 Giulia sport, remapped to something like 235 kw. No problems - excellent car. My frustration - when looking to update - is that the new Veloces I'm looking at are advertised for $87+ k. Fortunately, these things drop in price dramatically within a couple of years (when the 2nd hand market is a little more sane, that is.) All said and done, the Giulia is the most enjoyable-to-drive car I have ever owned. By a huge margin..! To any would-be Giulia owners out there, I say: go for it, you'll not regret buying a Giulia

I love my 2022 MY Giulia. The best aspects are the gutsy engine, the light weight, the fast and engaging steering, the well-tuned suspension, the balanced rear-wheel-drive handling, the simple and well-designed interior, and the looks. It's quite an old-school car, from the focus on low weight and great driving dynamics to the functional but unfussy interior. I like that it has actual knobs for stuff like the air con and volume control, where other luxury cars seem to be turning into tablets on wheels. The flipside is that it won't blow anyone away with its dashboard tech or luxury finishes. If you're looking for luxury or the latest gizmos, look elsewhere. But if you want a brilliant, well-made driver's car where every little detail has been thought through with the driver in mind, the Alfa is hard to beat. It's an increasingly rare thing, and I don't expect to ever own a better car for the money. It gets a lot of positive attention when out and about -- usually from Alfa fans and people who know that it's good to drive. My previous car, which I thought was quite a looker, might as well have been invisible in comparison. I even had a random girl on the street tell me "nice car" when I was cleaning it, which to me is unheard of.

In August I bought a new 2023 Giulia Speciale, 2.0L in Verde Montreal. Alfa Romeo only produced 15 cars of this Edition for the Canadian market. It is a car that handles extremely well und is still comfortable to ride in. I can see the progress over the last 53 years, when I switch to a drive in my 1970 Giulia Super 1600.

Great review as always... I picked up my facelifted Giulia Veloce in September and absolutely love it. I went with the ALfa white and black sunroof and it looks gorgeous in my opinion. I finally upgraded from a Alfa 156 (V6 Busso) though I was reticent in moving to a 4 cylinder. However, I can honestly say the whole driving dynamics of the Giulia are superb and hence I happily live with my choice. My only regret is I miss the throaty 156 V6 exhaust note - but you can't have everything! I will need to look after this one for some time as Alfa is going all electric from 2025 onwards 🙁

They will be selling plenty of ice cars after 2025. around 2025 they will put out new ICE models and they "might" be the last, but an Alfa has a lifespan of about 8-10 years on the market so They should sell them until 2035 at least. Then I think they might move to some different method of propulsion like EVs with gas generators

All-electric is only going to be temporary, if that. Car manufacturers are already in the know about this and ICE development is on-going. Nice review Tom - watched your last review of the AFG and was so moved by your observation that this is perhaps the last great european petrol car I had to buy one - insane value compared to the competition. And driving around Melbourne it feels truly special to own one in amidst the usual flotilla of Mercs and Beamers. Couple of further comments on items touched on here - 1. I do a lot of highway driving and get 5-6L using the A setting as opposed to leaving it in N - very little difference in terms of drive quality; 2. I also had a rattle in the cockpit, so an inherent problem perhaps - but cured in seconds with a neat rubber shim supplied by Stoprattle. It does feel a bit ridiculous to need a $2 bit of rubber to cure - but there may be some new Alfa owners this who could use the tip. Thanks Tom.

Nice, balanced review. And it's amazing that the Giulia is basically still unrivalled in its class as an all-round driving machine almost 8 years after its launch. I can understand Alfa deleting some of the standard equipment to keep the price down, but given there is no more fully-specced model (like an Estrema or a Competizione) available in Australia to buy up to, it's a real shame that you can't at least specify them as options. For me, the Giulia Veloce peaked in Australia with the version released in late 2020 (like the Visconti green/tan interior example tested by Chasing Cars back in 2021), as it had the all-important interior, infotainment and driver assist upgrades but had a much larger choice of interior and exterior colours, was still fully loaded with equipment (eg adjustable dampers) and came with the classic Quadrifoglio-style 5 hole wheels. A couple of years ago I bought a late 2020 Veloce in Misano blue with tan interior and yellow calipers and fully optioned, and I wouldn't trade it for a newer one. While the new headlights do look cool, I prefer my analogue gauges and I love the tan interior. And they didn't even upgrade the reversing camera with this facelift, which was by far the car's weakest link in terms of tech, or add wireless Carplay, both of which I would appreciate. So I'll continue to reverse with care and plug my phone in with a cable while enjoying the sweetest handling, best looking car in the segment. Grazie, Alfa!

I have owned the Giulia for over 2 years and the Polestar for 1 year. Sometimes I think the red car is better ... sometimes the black car. My heart will always favor the Red Alfa but my head can see the Black Polestar is actually quicker (except twisty mountain roads where the Giulia is quicker) and cheaper to run. Edit: IMO The 2017-2022 versions look organic. It looks like a wild animal stalking you from the front. This new one looks good, but loses that with the changed headlights.... sigh!

Also, one of the speakers of the Harman Kardon system makes funny noises from time to time. Also, not sure if it's the car or my phone but the Adroid Auto crashes frequently on this car. Alpha's have mostly been great cars for handling and communicating what the suspension is doing. This one seems to be no exception and equipped with those low profile tyres it should turn in nicely and handle well. That Alpha have sorted the ride with those tyres is testament to their suspension engineering, however, and here's the the rub. To equip a car with low profile tyres and not provide spare wheel and tyre in our market with our poor quality B roads where even a modest pot hole can cause irreparable damage to these tyres is a put-off for me as a can of goop won't suffice to repair the damage these tyres suffer. Beautiful car but poor quality control and the tyre issue is a deal breaker for me!

@jasonlewis2990 is your point that only perfection is better than 3 suspension modes? In most cars with electronic dampers, there are three tunes. 1 - too soft. 2 - normal (often worse than non-electronic) 3 - too firm. How is that a useful feature? I've never owned a car that would be significantly improved by dampers modes. Even good aftermarket coilovers are perfectly comfortable if ride height is correct and valving is correct. Been in plenty that needed a better suspension tune but not damper modes.

It's always good to learn new things. ALFA has a reputation for poor quality and resale value. The quality issue was discussed in the Video with noises and rattles. A quality system that works will not vary on the day of the week. I agree, it would be a great car to drive. With poor quality and resale, it would not be a good car to own.

You need to update your knowledge about "reputation", resale value is better than BMW and Merc... at least in Europe. About rattles, I have driven BMW 3 once, during traveling (2 weeks), it was brand new (well almost ~2500km) and there was a noise from the back, does it mean that all BMW 3 are bad cars? Of course no.

This is an odd viewpoint. If you don't like the lines, then that's fine - it's totally subjective, we all like what we like. But if you look at the Giulia it has pretty classic RWD proportions - look how far forward the front wheels are placed with a long gap back to the leading edge of the door. And it really does flare quite substantially at the back, accentuated by the staggered wheels. You can literally tell at a glance it's RWD.
